[gatortalk] Pick 'em results
A big cheer to no fewer than six people (!): Bill Perpich, Kate Wilson, Libby J, Oliver Barry, Rob Alexander, and Susan Ballard, as they finished 10-5 and tied for first place last week in Pick 'Em. We had another seven people tie for second place, at 9-6. For the year, Daniel Lloveras has inched out to a two-game lead over Vincent Santamaria. Hal Jarvis is one game behind Vince. This week, we'll have an abbreviated 3-game slate, just the three conference championship games. According to police, Rogers was dispatched to the area to check out reports of a reckless driver in a Chrysler. Rogers said that when he found the car matching the description, it was stopped although the traffic light was green. Rogers said he watched the light cycle through several times but the car remained stopped. When Rogers approached the car, he said he saw Rogers alone in the car and apparently asleep while at the wheel. "The front windows of the defendant's (Dunlap's) vehicle were cracked slightly and officers on the scene were unable to wake the defendant," Rogers wrote in the arrest report. "Loud repetitive commands were given to the defendant who would only open his eyes momentarily and nod back off." Rogers said he reached in through the slightly opened window to unlock the car and noticed that it was still in gear. After shifting the car into park and turning off the ignition, Rogers and other said they noticed that Dunlap's breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were watery and bloodshot, that he had trouble maintaining his balance and did poorly on field sobriety tests. Dunlap reportedly refused to submit to a breath test and told Rogers and other officers that he had been at "a gathering" and was headed home. Dunlap was booked into the Alachua County jail on the DUI charge. Dunlap's value to the UF team was noted when he was named Defensive MVP of the 2009 FedEx BCS National Championship Game. Loud verbal commands?? What is loud? Subjective, I bet. Police says car in gear-his word-I'm betting it was an automatic and anyone knows they roll when you're not firmly pressing the brake pedal. Of course, some have a weird knack of maintaining pressure on the brake pedal while sleeping. I'm not sure we can believe the police report that the car was running. Rogers said he reached in through the slightly opened window to unlock the car and noticed that it was still in gear. After shifting the car into park and turning off the ignition, Rogers and other said they noticed that Dunlap's breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were watery and bloodshot, that he had trouble maintaining his balance and did poorly on field sobriety tests. Dunlap reportedly refused to submit to a breath test and told Rogers and other officers that he had been at a gathering and was headed home. Dunlap was booked into the Alachua County jail on the DUI charge. Dunlap's value to the UF team was noted when he was named Defensive MVP of the 2009 FedEx BCS National Championship Game. No way. He is gone for at least the SECC. If he can get his issues resolved soon, he may be back for MNC. I wouldn't bet on it. I for one will be very disappointed if he is allowed to play this week. He made a stupid decision that could have been fatal to him or someone else. It doesn't matter if the car was running or in gear, if he was in the drivers seat and had the keys, that is enough for DUI. Bowden is expected to announce his resignation by way of a statement to be released Tuesday, sources told the Democrat. As part of his retirement, Bowden is expected to be offered a non-coaching position at FSU for an unspecified amount of time. In addition to any settlement compensation that may be negotiated as part of his retirement, Bowden is also entitled to $1 million upon his retirement as part of a clause in his coaching contract that was agreed upon at least 10 years ago. It is unclear if Bowden will coach the bowl game or not, but sources have said if he does coach one last game then the Gator Bowl may try to select FSU for its Jan. 1 game. Bowden’s retirement means Jimbo Fisher will become the first head football coach FSU has hired in 34 seasons. Fisher has spent the last three seasons on Bowden’s staff as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was named the head coach in waiting in December, 2007 after his first season on staff. Bowden's announcement ends a 34-year run at FSU where he built the football program into one of the country’s best. His teams won 10 or more games for 14 consecutive seasons from 1987-2000 – a mark that is still considered the standard for excellence in major-college football. His teams also won national championships in 1993 and 1999 and have played in a bowl game every year since 1982 – the longest active streak in the nation. Bowden’s decision to retire stems from a meeting he had on Monday morning with FSU President T.K. Wetherell and director of athletics Randy Spetman. The three men met for “about an hour” on Monday morning according to Bowden, who spoke at his weekly Florida State booster luncheon afterward. “(Tuesday) we’re going to meet again and have an announcement whether or not I’ll be here at Florida State [and] continue another year,” Bowden said when he took the podium. When he finished signing autographs after the event, he was surrounded by media members and asked what exactly took place in the meeting. “We talked about our options,” Bowden said. I see your point, but I don't think Urban will agree with you. Typically, they take the position that the player is suspended pending legal action. Once the player has cleared up his legal problems, then he can be reinstated unless he was found guilty. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Bobby Bowden says he wants to speak to his players before announcing whether he will return to coach Florida State next season. The 80-year-old coach told The Associated Press that an announcement would be made later Tuesday. I want to meet with my team first, Bowden said on his way into the office. That team meeting has been scheduled for 2:15 p.m. (EST). Bowden, the second-winningest coach in major college football history, met earlier Tuesday morning at his home with school officials, their second such meeting in two days. The coach is in his 34th season at FSU. After Florida State lost its regular-season finale to Florida on Saturday, Bowden said he had to do some soul-searching before deciding whether he would return in 2010. This is coach Bowden's decision, Florida State president T.K. Wetherell said Tuesday. He's going to talk to the team first. I'm not going to make any comment. Wetherell said he was waiting word from Bowden on his decision. On Monday night, Bowden told the AP at his home that he was still sifting through options presented to him when he met with Wetherell and athletic director Randy Spetman. Yes, there are options, said a relaxed Bowden, who was eating a light dinner while seated in an easy chair in his home office surrounded by memorabilia from his long career. The winningest coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history, Bowden teams put together the one of most dominant runs in college football history between 1987 and 2000 with 14 consecutive finishes in the nation's top five and a pair of national titles. But the Seminoles' fortunes haven't been nearly as good in recent years, finishing this year with a 6-6 record after starting the year with high expectations and a preseason No. 18 ranking. In 1993, despite a late-season slip at Notre Dame, Florida State won its first national title after near misses in 1987, 1988, 1991 and 1992 - several seasons because of losses to nemesis Miami, which won three national titles during that span. Bowden had a perfect season in 1999 as the Seminoles became the first team to go wire-to-wire in The Associated Press poll ranked No. 1 from the preseason to finish. Since winning their 12th ACC championship in 2005, the Seminoles have been 16-16 over the past four seasons against league opponents. Should Dunlap play? SEC coaches weigh in By Jon Solomon -- The Birmingham News http://connect.al.com/user/jsolomon/index.html December 01, 2009, 10:58AM Florida defensive end Carlos Dunlap's arrest for DUI four days before the SEC Championship Game puts Urban Meyer in a precarious position. Dunlap is the Gators' highest-rated NFL prospect and was the MVP of the BCS Championship Game last season. In other words, he's a difference-maker. I happened to talk to a couple SEC coaches this morning for a different story this week. South Carolina's Steve Spurrier and Kentucky's Rich Brooks weighed in on the impact if Dunlap doesn't play and how to handle his discipline. If it happened on a Thursday, I definitely wouldn't bring him to a game, Spurrier said. But Monday night, I might talk it over with the coaching staff and maybe even some seniors and captains and get an opinion on what the team wants to do with it and possibly handle it internally. It's a fine line between hurting the team and punishing a player to hurt the team. We've had some players who smoked pot and they automatically got their three-game suspension. I could kick them off forever, but I don't. Spurrier acknowledged that DUI is a very serious thing. But what's amazing is if you smoke pot, you are automatically suspended a game or two (at some SEC schools). But there's nothing in the manual at most universities about a DUI. Spurrier pointed out that Georgia has a policy for alcohol-related offenses. Any Georgia athlete arrested for the first time due to alcohol or drugs is suspended for at least 10 percent of the season. A second offense results in at least a 30-percent suspension and a third offense results in a permanent suspension and the termination of the scholarship. I don't think Florida does that. I don't think we do, Spurrier said. Personally, I think we all should have the same (policy) in the SEC regarding these types of situations. Brooks' reaction to the Dunlap's arrest the week of Florida's biggest game: Wow. Unbelievable. He's quite a player. He's so big and athletic and physical. He's very hard to block. I think they have very good depth. I'm sure they have some good options. But losing him would certainly hurt them. Spurrier described Dunlap as a big, lanky, active player. He's all over the place. I think what he does best is knock down passes. He's obviously one of the best defensive players in the country. The arrest also creates a distraction for the Gators, who are trying to win their third national championship in the past four seasons. It's obviously something you don't want to have happen, Brooks said. It can be a distraction and it can be a rallying point for the rest of the players that one guy's not going to make the difference. It can go both ways. GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Just days before Florida's showdown with Alabama in the SEC Championship game, Gators junior defensive end Carlos Dunlap was arrested early this morning and booked in Alachua County jail on a DUI charge. According to the Gainesville Police incident report, the arrest was made at 3:58 a.m. The report states that after trying to wake a sleeping Dunlap several times at a traffic light in the middle of an intersection near campus with his car still in gear, police had to unlock the red 2000 Chrysler through a crack in the driver's window. Police said they feared Dunlap would take his foot off the break and the car would cause an accident. After entry was gained, the car was put back in park and the engine turned off. The report alleges that alcohol was on Dunlap's breath. He took the field sobriety exercises with poor results, according to GPD spokesman Keith Kameg, then refused to take a breath test. Dunlap, 20, appeared in court and was released on his own recognizance at 9:10 a.m. The judge admonished Dunlap, whose birthday is Feb. 28, for underage drinking. As part of his release, he cannot possess alcohol, illegal drugs and any prescription drugs that are not prescribed to him. He is not to drive a motor vehicle and if caught he will be found in violation of his release and jailed. A court date has not been set for the DUI charge. Dunlap is forecast by many as a possible NFL first-round draft pick if he decides to leave after this season. Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN has him rated the No. 3 overall selection. We are aware of the incident and are currently gathering more information,'' Florida spokesman Steve McClain said. The North Charleston, S.C., native is tied for the team lead with seven sacks. The arrest figures to restart criticism of Florida's league issues. In the five years Urban Meyer has been the coach there had been more than two dozen legal issues prior to Dunlap's problems but none during the current season. Florida has plenty of experienced backups to step in if Dunlap is suspended, which is almost certain. His reasoning was that we'd likely be playing a lot more man to man in the secondary, using our improved pass rush and the skill set of our starting DBs to allow us to play tighter coverage, and to press the receivers closer to the line of scrimmage. When you play zone the defenders are looking at the QB more, so there are more chances to read his eyes and make breaks on the ball,leading to more opportunities for INTs. According to the Gainesville Police incident report, the arrest was made at 3:58 a.m. The report states that after trying to wake a sleeping Dunlap several times at a traffic light in the middle of an intersection near campus with his car still in gear, police had to unlock the red 2000 Chrysler through a crack in the driver's window. Police said they feared Dunlap would take his foot off the break and the car would cause an accident. After entry was gained, the car was put back in park and the engine turned off. The report alleges that alcohol was on Dunlap's breath. He took the field sobriety exercises with poor results, according to GPD spokesman Keith Kameg, then refused to take a breath test. Dunlap, 20, appeared in court and was released on his own recognizance at 9:10 a.m. The judge admonished Dunlap, whose birthday is Feb. 28, for underage drinking. [gatortalk] Am I completely and total biased - or is Bowden a good guy?
I threw up on my beautiful high def TV today duringESPN's CollegeFootball Live show. Bowden was on there saying that he wants to be remembered for all the great things he did for his players and for making them into such outstanding members of the community (or something like that). Bowden was and remains a sleazeball. He always knew how to work the media, so he rarely suffered bad press, and they certainly won't start now. It would seem as if they are beating up on a helpless old man. If they continued to kiss his butt after the Tainted Title scandal, we shouldn't expect anything truthful and objective about him now. Bowden has been spewing his BS for so long, at this point, he may actually believe it himself. Regardless of what he thinks or wants to think, he was a guy who was obsessed with his image and PR. Remember how upset he was when SOS called him out on his team's dirty play? He didn't address the charges directly, just moaned that he wished Steve hadn't said what he said. Yes, he built a program back in the '70s and '80s by traveling to Lincoln and other places and taking on the big football powers. One can respect that. However, he also ran one of the dirtiest programs in the country. I believe one should judge a person by his actions more than his words. I think the balance of Bowden's actions over the course of his adult life were dishonest. Just because few ever called him on it doesn't make it any less true. Go Gators Ken B. There is a Gator party on Friday night at 6 p.m. at Stats sports bar which is very close to the Dome.
