I remember it opening as the 'Rat': Rathskeller (sp).  It was in a basement
near, or in, Bryan Hall, I think across the street.  It burned.

Rathskeller (German: "council's cellar", modern spelling:
 Ratskeller) is a name in
German-speaking countries for a bar below street level. The term originally
referred specifically to restaurants that were located in the basement of
city hall (Rathaus). As a proper noun, many taverns, nightclubs and similar
establishments throughout the world now use this as a name.[1]

The word had been used in English since the mid-19th century.[1]

At least one New York restaurant called itself a "rathskeller" in the 19th
century.[2]

The Boston, Massachusetts, Rathskeller (nicknamed The Rat) was a Kenmore
Square live music venue that opened in 1974. It is notable for being one of
Greater Boston's premier music venues for three decades and the starting
point for the WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble.[1]

The Ram's Head Rathskeller in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was opened in
1948 by an Austrian Jew by the last name of Danziger, who came to Chapel
Hill as a refugee from the Holocaust. "The Rat" was the first restaurant in
the area to employ an entirely African-American staff. Long a popular spot
with students and alumni, the restaurant, which extends over a catacomb-like
basement with many different rooms, was filled with UNC memorabilia and
history. "The Rat" was one of the oldest continuously operating businesses
in Chapel Hill, but was closed down in 2008 due to non-payment of taxes. Its
decor and memorabilia was auctioned off leaving just the bones of the
structure. The future of its unique location is unknown.

Read House in New Castle, Delaware served as a speakeasy during Prohibition,
using the underground location to hide the covert activity.[3]

The Athenaeum Building in Indianapolis

Das Deutsche Hause rathskeller restaurant in Indianapolis, Indiana received
historic landmark status. Now called Athenaeum, it has served Bavarian fare
since 1894.

The Aztec Brewing Company in San Diego, California included a rathskeller as
the tasting room at the brewery. Murals on the wall depicted various scenes
of Aztecs painted by renowned Spanish artist Jose Moya del Piño. When the
city tore down the structure, the murals were preserved for future use.

James Lawrence Kernan operated an upscale rathskeller in the basement of the
Maryland Theater (Baltimore) in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Seelbach Hilton in Louisville, KY has a Rathskeller decorated with rare
Rookwood Pottery. Today, the Seelbach Rathskeller remains the only surviving
ensemble of its kind.[4]

Another notable Rathskeller is located on the campus of St. Bonaventure
University. It was founded in 1963.

The Rathskeller in Southbury, CT is a very popular area restaurant known for
its seafood specials and is a popular Friday night hot spot. It was awarded
the title "best wings in town" by The Brew Crew Social Club.

Rathskellers occasionally show up in popular culture. Quentin Tarantino's
Emmy-nominated film Inglourious Basterds features a major scene and gun
battle taking place in a rathskeller. In The Naked Brothers TV shows and
movies, the father character plays the accordion at a fictional restaurant
called The Hoboken Rathskeller. Child actress Adele De Garde starred in a
1918 silent movie called The Rathskeller and the Rose.

re-purposed basements. To market these untraditional eating locations to
students, many of these are termed "rathskellers" including:

I remember it opening as the 'Rat': Rathskeller (sp).  It was in a basement 
near, or in, Bryan Hall, I think across the street.  It burned.

Rathskeller (German: "council's cellar", modern spelling: Ratskeller) is a name 
in German-speaking countries for a bar below street level. The term originally 
referred specifically to restaurants that were located in the basement of city 
hall (Rathaus). As a proper noun, many taverns, nightclubs and similar 
establishments throughout the world now use this as a name.[1]
The word had been used in English since the mid-19th century.[1]
At least one New York restaurant called itself a "rathskeller" in the 19th 
century.[2]

The Boston, Massachusetts, Rathskeller (nicknamed The Rat) was a Kenmore Square 
live music venue that opened in 1974. It is notable for being one of Greater 
Boston's premier music venues for three decades and the starting point for the 
WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble.[1]
The Ram's Head Rathskeller in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was opened in 1948 
by 
an Austrian Jew by the last name of Danziger, who came to Chapel Hill as a 
refugee from the Holocaust. "The Rat" was the first restaurant in the area to 
employ an entirely African-American staff. Long a popular spot with students 
and 
alumni, the restaurant, which extends over a catacomb-like basement with many 
different rooms, was filled with UNC memorabilia and history. "The Rat" was one 
of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Chapel Hill, but was closed 
down in 2008 due to non-payment of taxes. Its decor and memorabilia was 
auctioned off leaving just the bones of the structure. The future of its unique 
location is unknown.
Read House in New Castle, Delaware served as a speakeasy during Prohibition, 
using the underground location to hide the covert activity.[3]
 
The Athenaeum Building in Indianapolis
Das Deutsche Hause rathskeller restaurant in Indianapolis, Indiana received 
historic landmark status. Now called Athenaeum, it has served Bavarian fare 
since 1894.
The Aztec Brewing Company in San Diego, California included a rathskeller as 
the 
tasting room at the brewery. Murals on the wall depicted various scenes of 
Aztecs painted by renowned Spanish artist Jose Moya del Piño. When the city 
tore 
down the structure, the murals were preserved for future use.
James Lawrence Kernan operated an upscale rathskeller in the basement of the 
Maryland Theater (Baltimore) in Baltimore, Maryland.
The Seelbach Hilton in Louisville, KY has a Rathskeller decorated with rare 
Rookwood Pottery. Today, the Seelbach Rathskeller remains the only surviving 
ensemble of its kind.[4]
Another notable Rathskeller is located on the campus of St. Bonaventure 
University. It was founded in 1963.
The Rathskeller in Southbury, CT is a very popular area restaurant known for 
its 
seafood specials and is a popular Friday night hot spot. It was awarded the 
title "best wings in town" by The Brew Crew Social Club.

Rathskellers occasionally show up in popular culture. Quentin Tarantino's 
Emmy-nominated film Inglourious Basterds features a major scene and gun battle 
taking place in a rathskeller. In The Naked Brothers TV shows and movies, the 
father character plays the accordion at a fictional restaurant called The 
Hoboken Rathskeller. Child actress Adele De Garde starred in a 1918 silent 
movie 
called The Rathskeller and the Rose.

Go to any city around the world, and the best restaurant will always be a
little hole in the wall. The best bar will often be a tiny, dank room with a
sign outside that just says "bar." Why? Because these are the places that
don't attract tourists, the places that you have to look hard to find, the
places that are usually locally owned and operated and that emphasize
substance over style. Luckily, Gainesville has some of the coolest hidden
gems around, and some not-so-hidden ones, too. So, if you're a new student
or a resident who thinks there's nothing left to do in this town, consider
this your A to Z guide to all things Gainesville:

A - THE ATLANTIC: One of Gainesville's coolest rooms for live music. It's
dark and smoky and has just the right mixture of kitschy art, elegant
ambience and rock-club grime. Also, the Atlantic hosts "House Party
Fridays," which feature live music and the record-spinning sorcery of DJs
Thomas and Ernie Hotsauce. 15 N. Main St. Call 264-9844.

B - THE BUTTERFLY RAINFOREST: See some of the most beautiful creatures on
Earth here. When you're done, check out the Florida Museum of Natural
History right next door. At the intersection of Southwest 34th Street and
Hull Road, in the University of Florida Cultural Plaza. Call 846-2000.

C - COMMON GROUNDS COFFEEHOUSE: Calling Common Grounds a coffeehouse is like
calling Starbuck's a premier music venue. Of course, switch the titles and
it works out, as Common Grounds is the best place in town to see everything
from nationally touring bands to the hottest local acts. 210 S.W. Second
Ave. Call 372-7320. 

D - DEVIL'S MILLHOPPER GEOLOGICAL STATE PARK: Gainesville is home to a
surprising number of natural landmarks, and this one ranks with the best of
them. You'll get a workout walking around this 120-foot-deep sinkhole that
leads down to a miniature rainforest. 4732 Millhopper Road. Call 955-2008. 

E - EAST GAINEVILLE: Home to some of the best restaurants in town like The
Jones, East End Eatery, Kickin' Devil Cafe and several barbecue stands as
well as the historic Duck Pond neighborhood, the world of Gainesville east
of Main Street deserves some serious exploration.

F - FLACO'S CUBAN BAKERY: Far and away the best spot to get quick, cheap,
good Cuban food. It's downtown within distance of every bar, stays open late
and is across the street from a building painted like a cow. 200 W.
University Ave. Call 371-2000.

G - GAINESVILLE RACEWAY: It's a high-speed, rubber burning,
pedal-to-the-metal experience right here at home. The track is part of the
National Hotrod Association's circuit and features all the drag racing you
could hope to see. 11211 N. County Road 225. Call 377-0046.

H - THE HIPPODROME STATE THEATRE: Housed in the coolest building in
Gainesville, the Hipp offers a wide array of plays, foreign movies and local

I - INDIAN CUISINE: With its voluminous menu and authentic cuisine, this is

J - JUNIOR'S: A local landmark, Junior's offers soul food in a buffet-style

K - KARMA KREAM: Go here for the best organic ice cream in town. The offbeat
flavors, unique deserts and obvious craft and care that go into each
