RE: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: Source: Muschamp to be head coach at Florida
As coordinators go, I agree that he is one of the best. I would have thought that UF wouldn't have to go for a coordinator though. We are big time and it seemed like there were several names on the list that would have been a better choice (and no, not Stoops, never believed that). He is now our head coach and I will support him, but I think this is Foley's riskiest hire to date. Muschamp not only has to become a head coach with all that entails - hiring coaches, supervising staff, setting practice and program schedules, booster circuit, etc., but he also has to win over a suspect fan base. That is not an easy task as Florida fans are wont to cannabalize their own if things don't go right quickly. And selling the fans will be difficult as he has to overcome these two issues in particular: He was a walk-on at the University of Georgia, where he was a defensive co-captain his senior season. Muschamp was on the same LSU staff with new Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher and the two are close friends. They own a beach house together in Florida. If he can come out and fire everyone up and convince us he is a Gator and not a Dawg or a SOW sympathizer, then great, but until then the jury is out. I was hoping for that home run hire that everyone would say, great choice, we didn't get that. Well, Vince Dooley went to Auburn. Pat Dye went to Ga. As long is winning is important he'll be ok. Really, the biggest problem I have is that he's never been a head coach. What will his offense be like, etc? He doesn't have any credentials other than they like him at Texas and he lived in Gainesville as a boy. Re: [gatortalk] Muschamp...
Ok... I have been quiet on Muschamp. I am fine with this. I am excited about this. This will bring a tenacity, work ethic, family oriented, fierceness to our our defense. We have not had that since Charlie and I would even go so far as to say since before even that. I want fierce, I want tenacious, I want 60 minutes of a$$kicking. Mushcamp will bring that attitude. Yeah, he has not been a head coach, but he is battle tested in two BCS conference and proven as a defensive mind. As a head coach, he has to look at what he has at Florida, find an OC that fits, make the hire, and then let him work. We will know more once he determines where we are going and who he brings in. Right now, the only bad decision he has made was that UGA thing... and you can bet he will do all he can to pound those puppies or risk being called out by Gator Nation. I can't wait to see who is on his staff, but the most important thing right now is that I have not seen one single negative thing from any of the current players. Even the recruits seem excited. Foley may have saved this recruiting season, we will see if his gamble pays off long term, but I like his track record as an AD. We will know soon enough, but my money is on Muschamp. Re: [gatortalk] Muschamp...
Agreed. I will say it again... he's brilliant and yes he's got an attitude. From Tweets Ive seen from the players... well atleast the D players are thrilled with him. How could they not be? I think the other positive is... he should be here for the long haul if he's successful. He from what I can tell has no aspirations of jumping to the NFL. He left the Dolphins because he missed recruiting. I am starting to warm up to this... and a few more beers and I may forget that he was a UGAly alum. Re: [gatortalk] Muschamp...
I'm not so sure there is all that much to save recruit-wise. Driskell would be good to keep, maybe a few others. I just wish Foley would have gone after Petersen or a more proven commodity. Even the Texas writer admitted UF is one of the top 5. Why take a chance when you don't have to? He may come in and be great. But, even if he's Mister Wonderful, he's still going to face a learning curve in becoming a head coach. How long will he get to do that? At Florida? One, two games? We all know what's expected, super human success! RE: [gatortalk] Muschamp...
Auburn - Uga does not have the same relationship as Fla - Uga. We wouldn't be having this conversation if he'd been a player at Auburn or Alabama, or pretty much any other SEC team. It's not that he played for another SEC team, it's that he played for this particular SEC team. All I'm saying is... well, how hard would it be for, say, Ahmad Black to really despise the Gators 15 years from now, even if he's paid to do so? He just wouldn't, right? Do we think we have a corner on the expression, 'once a Gator, always a Gator'? Sure, he'll try to beat Georgia -- that's his job -- but it won't have the same edge. There won't be the tweaks and the digs. There won't be Uga logos in the urinals. He won't be trying to hang half-a-hundred on 'em, or calling last second time-outs to prolong the agony. No football player can learn to hate their alma mater, so he'll want his kids to play hard and respect that fine group of Georgia players. (Arrggg!) On the other hand, if he's as smart as he's supposed to be, perhaps he'll overcompensate. Who knows? The only good part of the Uga angle is that it seems to irritate Uga fans more than it does us. It's always good to tick off the mongrels. On every other aspect, I really think this is a good hire. On head coaching experience, I would point out that Oklahoma hired one of the country's best defensive coordinators several years ago, who also had no head coaching experience, and that worked out okay for them. There are plenty of other examples, too, as well as plenty that didn't work out. Is it a risk? Yes. But I think it depends on the person more than on whether they've done it before. I trust Foley to recognize what it takes to be a winning coach. His overall track record is excellent. Anyway, he's our coach and I think he is a good hire. He's passionate, he's tough, he's smart, he's energetic, his players love him, he's a great recruiter. He'll need to bring in a really great OC and he'll need to convince us all that he really is a Gator, but if he isn't smart enough to figure those things out, then we'll be in big trouble anyway. I'll come to grips with the Uga thing as soon as my skin stops crawling. As my rational mind starts to reassert control, I'm starting to get excited by the possibilities. Re: [gatortalk] Muschamp...
Apparently, Muschamp tried to walk on to Florida before he went to Georgia in '90, and the Gators' DB position coach kept them waitng for hours and them blew them off . RE: [gatortalk] Muschamp...
I'm wondering was this hire because Muschamp (or is it Muschomp?) is truly the best candidate for the job or is it because Foley thinks he is smarter than everyone else? Now don't get me wrong, Foley is brilliant as AD and I give him kudos for the job he has done. He does have the reputation of finding the young up and coming coaches (see Donovan, O'Sullivan, Butler), but he has also had a few misses ( Zook anyone). Muschamp is by every account a wonderful coach and is ready for a head coaching job, but was he really the best candidate and the only one we would talk to? I don't think we did this for any monetary gain, it is almost certain that he will end up with a package that is worth close to $3M a year. So unless we had back channel communications with the other leading contenders and they said no, this hire seems to be an uneccessary gamble. Unless you are Jeremy Foley and you want to point out what a genious you are... [gatortalk] bulldog perspective for next year's game-from Dawgsports.com (don't tell any of my friends I went on this site)
Why Winning the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party Against the Florida Gators in 2011 is Critical for the Georgia Bulldogs * Beard_47_series_wins_and_42_points_in_2007_tinyby T Kyle King http://www.sbnation.com/users/T%20Kyle%20King How important is next year's Cocktail Party? Well, it's always pretty important, but the 2011 SEC East clash in Jacksonville figures to be even more significant than usual. The last three Gator coaches all departed Gainesville with a record against the Bulldogs ending in and one. It is said that first impressions are lasting impressions, and, boy howdy, has that been true for Sunshine State Saurian skippers. Since the Orange and Blue started playing football acknowledge having started playing football, Florida has been guided by 20 full-time head coaches (not counting interim coaches Gary Darnell and Charlie Strong). Three of them (Jack Forsythe, G.E. Pyle, and J.A. Van Fleet, who may have appeared in Dynasty, The Andy Griffith Show, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, respectively) did not cross paths with Georgia. Eight of the remaining 17 began their careers in command of the Gators by going 1-0 against the Red and Black. Here is how that worked out for them: Coach 1st Yr. v. UGA 1st Mtg. w/UGA Career v. UGA Fla. Career W% Charles Bachman 1928 W, 26-6 2-2-1 .594 Tom Lieb 1940 W, 18-13 1-4 .436 Ray Graves 1960 W, 22-14 6-3-1 .686 Doug Dickey 1970 W, 24-17 3-6 .573 Galen Hall 1984 W, 27-0 2-3 .686 Steve Spurrier 1990 W, 38-7 11-1 .817 Ron Zook 2002 W, 20-13 2-1 .622 Urban Meyer 2005 W, 14-10 5-1 .810 Obviously, those eight coaches account for every first-place finish in the conference standings and the national rankings in Gator history. Five of them finished their careers at or above .500 against the Red and Black, with one of the remaining three finishing just one game shy of a winning mark against the 'Dawgs. Seven of the eight won more than 57 per cent of their games, with half going .686 or better. What of the nine Florida coaches who opened up at 0-1 against Georgia? These are they: Coach 1st Yr. v. UGA 1st Mtg. w/UGA Career v. UGA Fla. Career W% Charles McCoy 1915 L, 37-0 0-2 .474 A.L. Busser 1919 L, 16-0 0-1 .467 William Kline 1920 L, 56-0 0-1 .690 Tom Sebring 1926 L, 32-9 0-2 .600 Dutch Stanley 1933 L, 14-0 0-3 .517 Josh Cody 1936 L, 26-8 1-3 .419 Ray Wolf 1946 L, 33-14 1-3 .359 Bob Woodruff 1950 L, 6-0 6-4 .554 Charley Pell 1979 L, 33-10 0-5 .556 Of the nine who failed to beat Georgia the first time, six never beat Georgia. Only one had a winning record against the Bulldogs, and that lone coach was the only one of them to post a winning percentage of better than .250 against the Classic City Canines. Four of those coaches had losing ledgers to show for their respective stays in Gainesville, and just two won at least 56 per cent of their games with the Gators. William Kline alone won at better than a 60 per cent clip. In short, when a new Florida skipper takes the helm, it matters a great deal whether he gets off on the right foot in Jacksonville. Those who emerge triumphant from their first encounter with Georgia generally go on to be successful, both against the Bulldogs and overall; those who don't, don't. Next October, we need to break in the new guy, in order to avoid getting broken in by the new guy. For what it's worth, five of the nine Florida coaches who opened up 0-1 against Georgia sustained shutout setbacks in their initial encounter with the 'Dawgs, and none notched more than 14 points against the Red and Black. A breakout defensive performance that paves the way to a win in the 2011 Cocktail Party is mission-critical to Georgia's success next year . . . and beyond. Will Muschamp Named Head Coach of Florida Gators; Georgia Bulldogs Fans Throw Up in Their Mouths a Little Beard_47_series_wins_and_42_points_in_2007_tinyby T Kyle King http://www.sbnation.com/users/T%20Kyle%20King on Dec http://www.dawgsports.com/2010/12/12/1870921/will-muschamp-named-head-coach -of-florida-gators-georgia-bulldogs 12, 2010 12:32 AM EST in Football http://www.dawgsports.com/section/football It has been a busy last 24 hours or so in my household. On Friday night, my family and I went to the Georgia Dome to see the high school football championship game between Chattahoochee and Starr's Mill. On Saturday, the four of us went and got a Christmas tree, which we put up in the living room while the Army-Navy game played in the background. Later on Saturday evening, I got together for supper with some old friends from college. A small group of us met at a local restaurant, where we ate and caught up with one another, and, although the Heisman Trophy presentation and the ESPN Pony Excess documentary were visible on the television screens in the background, we paid them little mind. At some point in the evening, one of our number---for the sake of recording my own personal where were you when . . . ? moment for posterity, I will note that it was Jeff Rogers http://www.dawgsports.com/2006/8/13/22551/9427 ---went on-line on his cell phone and saw the news, already known to you and reported http://www.dawgsports.com/2010/12/11/1870697/will-muschamp-is-now-dead-to-m e-coach-of-florida here http://www.dawgsports.com/2010/12/11/1870775/muschamp-is-a-gator-i-cant-bel ieve-i-just-typed-that previously, that Will Muschamp would replace Urban Meyer as the head coach at Florida. In my defense, I was trying to relax and catch up with some old friends, and I http://www.dawgsports.com/2010/12/11/1869920/a-georgia-bulldogs-fan-assesse s-urban-meyers-tenure-with-the-florida only just adjusted to Urban Meyer's departure earlier in the day, so I initially had a little trouble processing the news. Was it good news? Was it bad news? What did it mean for Georgia? What did it mean for my own very fond memories of Coach Muschamp as a former Bulldog player? On the one hand, I http://www.dawgsports.com/2008/12/15/694270/coaching-report-card-which hailed Will Muschamp as a first-rate hire when he became the head-coach-in-waiting at Texas and considered http://www.dawgsports.com/2010/10/5/1731804/where-should-the-georgia-bulldo gs-turn-if-greg-mcgarity-must-replace him the best candidate when the Mark Richt hot seat talk was at its hottest. On the other hand, Jeremy Foley had two good options with ties to the program and head coaching experience in Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong, yet he ended up with a first-time head coach instead. The truth is that we don't know how good he will be, but I don't mind telling you that I think Will Muschamp will be very, very good. That thought brought me to the next one: Will Muschamp was a damn good 'Dawg, but must that sentiment now be expressed strictly in the past tense? Switching sides is not uncommon in this business---Vince Dooley played at Auburn but coached at Georgia; Mark Richt played at Miami but coached at Florida State; Will Muschamp played at Georgia but coached at Auburn---but does Coach Muschamp's willingness to take over as the head man for one of his alma mater's most hated rivals push him over into Pat Dye territory? I wrestled with that one for a while as I sat there with my friends, but, eventually, Pony Excess ended and SportsCenter began. I couldn't hear it, but I could see it, and, when the news was reported on television, the Worldwide Leader projected over the sports anchor's shoulder a photograph of Will Muschamp, superimposed over Florida's gator-head logo. The image literally turned my stomach. I didn't have to get up from the table and run to the bathroom or anything, but the sight of Coach Muschamp's mug paired with the Sunshine State Saurians' emblem caused my gastric acids to churn, and I genuinely felt myself become a little nauseous. William Larry Muschamp was a damn good 'Dawg, but now he's a damn dirty Gator who must be defeated. We missed our chance to put Urban Meyer in his place when the opportunity presented itself; now, we must wish ill on a man who previously was one of our own. If you can't quite bring yourself to feel contempt for Will Muschamp---and I can understand if you can't---view it as a rescue mission: in order to restore Will Muschamp's soul, we must get him away from Gainesville, and that means beating him routinely until he gets fired. Either way, Will Muschamp ceased to be one of us and became one of them on December 11, 2010, the date we abbreviate 12/11/10, in a progression that calls to mind a countdown that starts 12 . . . 11 . . . 10 . . . and ends with a Boom! Considering some reports already pegged Bob Stoops as the next coach and in the process of finalizing a contract, leading to Mr. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2010/12/oklahoma -bob-stoops-florida-job/1 Stoops denying the rumors, it may pay to wait for the news conference. Still, ESPN , USAToday, and others tend to do better fact checking than Fan Blogs like 'Gator County.' In fact, Muschamp's Wikipedia page already declares him as the head coach of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Muschamp University of Florida. Which means that Will Muschamp, Dawg that he was, is now dead to me. Star-divide Every Bulldog fan has different feelings about the Big Four rivals: Auburn, Tech, Florida, and Tennessee. The feelings have arisen differently based upon the time periods in which those fans first became Bulldogs. I became a fan of the Bulldogs in the late 1990s. For this reason the greatest evil in the world-college sports-wise-is, to me, the Florida http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/teams/florida-gators Gators. I hate them with a passion. Three years of Georgia-Florida games-2000, 2001, and 2002-will do that to you. Having family living in Florida to see how Florida fans behave in their natural environment with others of like minds will also do that to you. (Hint: They don't change. They're still arrogant, ignorant, swaggering and rude fools.) To give you the idea of the depths of my dislike for the university located in Gainesville consider this: I love my daughter with all my heart, but if she, heaven forbid, chose to attend said university for anything (undergrad, grad school, etc), I would kiss her good luck and tell her I hope she received some good student loans. No dime of mine will be paid to that University. (I even declined an extra copy of an article of mine published in one of their law journals on this principal.) Which leads to Will Muschamp being dead to me. Mr. Muschamp was a damn good Dawg. He walked on and fought hard on our defense. He played for the University and did well enough. He fought for the University's honor on the football field and, for that reason, deserve my respect. For all time I shall give that respect to Mr. Muschamp. Because he's dead to me. He dies to me the moment he works for Florida. I cannot and willfully chose not to reconcile a Bulldog working for that school as a coach. I will see them no more. They are something beyond what they once were; they are dead to me. So it is with a heavy heart that I remember a damn good Dawg who is now dead to me. Tomorrow at dinner I shall silently raise a glass in honor of the memories of Mr. Muschamp, the once and former Bulldog. Who is dead to me. And my wife shall look at me as she oft does, wondering most likely in silence (although potentially out-loud) what the heck her husband is doing, and then go back to her own meal. Oddly, someone can come back to life once they quit working for Florida. Steve Spurrier is one example. He is no longer dead to me. I enjoy his witty banter and amusing jabs. I cheered heartily for his South Carolina team against Florida and then Auburn. Mr. Spurrier, unlike Mr. Muschamp, is not dead to me. Similarly, Mr. McGarity is no longer dead to me. A Bulldog come back home, someone saved from the taint of death and brought back to the land of the living. Unlike Mr. Muschamp, Mr. McGarity is not dead to me. Auburn delenda est? No dear Brother King; Florida delenda est! And we shall plow salt into the ground so no living thing shall grow ever again. I have already purchased the salt futures for this endeavor. Which leads me to this closing question: Does anyone else have 'dead to me' acts? If someone works for a rival, does that person become dead to me? Does a fumble on the goal line make a player dead to you? Does a Bulldog fan willfully wearing a rival's gear make them dead to you? Permanently? Temporarily? And, finally, I ask my fellow Bulldogs to raise a glass to toast Will Muschamp, a damn good Dawg who is dead to me and, I hope, to many of you. And selling the fans will be difficult as he has to overcome these two issues in particular: If he can come out and fire everyone up and convince us he is a Gator and not a Dawg or a SOW sympathizer, then great, but until then the jury is out. I was hoping for that home run hire that everyone would say, great choice, we didn't get that. I'm not, like Richt, into cheap tricks. $100,000 bonus if he wins, $100,000 deduction from salary if he loses to FSU or an SEC East team should take care of our fears and his motivation. A. Which members of our coaching staff would you keep? None is an acceptable answer. I would try to keep Chuck Heater. Will Muschamp Named Head Coach of Florida Gators; Georgia Bulldogs Fans Throw Up in Their Mouths a Little by T Kyle King on Dec 12, 2010 12:32 AM EST in Football It has been a busy last 24 hours or so in my household. On Friday night, my family and I went to the Georgia Dome to see the high school football championship game between Chattahoochee and Starr’s Mill. At some point in the evening, one of our number---for the sake of recording my own personal where were you when . . . ? moment for posterity, I will note that it was Jeff Rogers---went on-line on his cell phone and saw the news, already known to you and reported here previously, that Will Muschamp would replace Urban Meyer as the head coach at Florida. In my defense, I was trying to relax and catch up with some old friends, and I only just adjusted to Urban Meyer’s departure earlier in the day, so I initially had a little trouble processing the news. Was it good news? Was it bad news? What did it mean for Georgia ? What did it mean for my own very fond memories of Coach Muschamp as a former Bulldog player? On the one hand, I hailed Will Muschamp as a first-rate hire when he became the head-coach-in-waiting at Texas and considered him the best candidate when the Mark Richt hot seat talk was at its hottest. On the other hand, Jeremy Foley had two good options with ties to the program and head coaching experience in Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong, yet he ended up with a first-time head coach instead. The truth is that we don’t know how good he will be, but I don’t mind telling you that I think Will Muschamp will be very, very good. That thought brought me to the next one: Will Muschamp was a damn good ‘Dawg, but must that sentiment now be expressed strictly in the past tense? Switching sides is not uncommon in this business---Vince Dooley played at Auburn but coached at Georgia; Mark Richt played at Miami but coached at Florida State; Will Muschamp played at Georgia but coached at Auburn---but does Coach Muschamp’s willingness to take over as the head man for one of his alma mater’s most hated rivals push him over into Pat Dye territory? I wrestled with that one for a while as I sat there with my friends, but, eventually, Pony Excess ended and SportsCenter began. I couldn’t hear it, but I could see it, and, when the news was reported on television, the Worldwide Leader projected over the sports anchor’s shoulder a photograph of Will Muschamp, superimposed over Florida ’s gator-head logo. The image literally turned my stomach. I didn’t have to get up from the table and run to the bathroom or anything, but the sight of Coach Muschamp’s mug paired with the Sunshine State Saurians’ emblem caused my gastric acids to churn, and I genuinely felt myself become a little nauseous. William Larry Muschamp was a damn good ‘Dawg, but now he’s a damn dirty Gator who must be defeated. We missed our chance to put Urban Meyer in his place when the opportunity presented itself; now, we must wish ill on a man who previously was one of our own. If you can’t quite bring yourself to feel contempt for Will Muschamp---and I can understand if you can’t---view it as a rescue mission: in order to restore Will Muschamp’s soul, we must get him away from Gainesville , and that means beating him routinely until he gets fired. Either way, Will Muschamp ceased to be one of us and became one of them on December 11, 2010, the date we abbreviate 12/11/10, in a progression that calls to mind a countdown that starts 12 . . . 11 . . . 10 . . . and ends with a Boom! Feel free to fill in the epithet that follows. Given the meaning of the mater in alma mater, the vulgarity is appropriate under the circumstances. Just a guess here, but I'd bet the conversation Muschamp had with Driskell included keeping Scott Loefler, since Loefler, as everyone here knows, was brought in to help Tebow with his mechanics.
