Re: [gatortalk] 2011 Luxury Season Tickets Available For A Limited Time

I've been riding my bike a lot more already this spring, as long as I don't
have to buy two weeks' worth of groceries. I like riding my bike to Target
when I only need a few small items... cuts back significantly on impulse
spending if it won't fit in my backpack. Rode my bike to the bank, post office
and to meet a friend for lunch today. My legs are killing me, but I feel so
virtuous! LOL.

We always take the train into the city... it's about 10 minutes from the
house, and by far the easiest and most fun way to get downtown. For work,
however, there are no easy alternatives other than working in my PJ's down in
the basement. I do really enjoy biking for errands rather than driving... Home
Depot, auto parts store, liquor store... the staples of summer :). I think I
rode just over 750 miles the summer of 2008 in my last defiance to high gas
prices.

I think it's got more to do with the current economy, gas prices and general

We always take the train into the city... it's about 10 minutes from the house,
and by far the easiest and most fun way to get downtown. For work, however,
there are no easy alternatives other than working in my PJ's down in the
basement.  I do really enjoy biking for errands rather than driving... Home
Depot, auto parts store, liquor store... the staples of summer :). I think I
rode just over 750 miles the summer of 2008 in my last defiance to high gas
prices.

I think I am going to stay in Jax again and lake city this year for a
good part of my trips down there... the thing that kills me about
Gville hotels.. is they get you with requiring a two night stay
minimum and then charge $145/nite (and that was the super 8 on top of
that)

We then headed down to our motel in Ocala. Because we didn’t
properly plan ahead I couldn’t find a room at a decent price in
Gainesville.
We headed home on Sunday morning and I decided to avoid the
turnpike and head out hwy 40 through the Ocala National Forest and
make a side trip to Deland. We stopped in Deland and walked around
their nicely restored downtown area. Nice place and Stetson has
some beautiful buildings.

Arrived home about 4pm and wondered where the weekend had gone.
Didn’t mean for this tale to be such a downer but honestly I wish
we had stayed home and watched it on TV.

There is a nice an inexpensive hotel in Wildwood right off of the
the turnpike. Very Clean; I think that it was the Sleep Inn & Suites
at 1225 Main Street.

Book it for the Friday night before the game.

Arrive early enough on Friday to eat dinner at Cafe Cotillion, an
experience not to be missed. In the town's original courthouse
building, the small restaurant serves well-made southern classics;
country fried steak with homemade gravy; shrimp in grits. Everything
is homemade, even the salad dressings. Don't miss the red velvet cake.

To be honest, it is worth a trip to Wildwood just to enjoy dinner
there:

http://www.cafecotillion.com/

The Sleep Inn offers complimentary hot breakfast the next morning;
nothing fancy but good and free.

Get up in the morning and head to the O&B, you will be hours ahead
of the traffic jams and have no problem with parking. We arrived
early enough to grab seats in the covered area of the South end zone
with a TV right in front of us and a bathroom right behind.

Yeah... average prices for regular in Chicagoland are $4.35 (almost always the
highest in the nation, for reasons beyond me)... and with my "modifications" my
car requires premium. The last time this happened in 2008 I rode my bike that
summer more than I drove... I see that happening again this year.

John I certainly appreciate the advice. It's been several years since we
were in Gainesville and probably two decades since we had approached from
the south. The cafe in Wildwood seems right up my alley.
Thanks again

We headed home on Sunday morning and I decided to avoid the turnpike and

Deland. We stopped in Deland and walked around their nicely restored
downtown area. Nice place and Stetson has some beautiful buildings.

Arrived home about 4pm and wondered where the weekend had gone.

Didn't mean for this tale to be such a downer but honestly I wish we had
stayed home and watched it on TV.

There is a nice an inexpensive hotel in Wildwood right off of the the
turnpike. Very Clean; I think that it was the Sleep Inn & Suites at 1225
Main Street.

Book it for the Friday night before the game.

Arrive early enough on Friday to eat dinner at Cafe Cotillion, an experience
not to be missed. In the town's original courthouse building, the small
restaurant serves well-made southern classics; country fried steak with
homemade gravy; shrimp in grits. Everything is homemade, even the salad
dressings. Don't miss the red velvet cake.

To be honest, it is worth a trip to Wildwood just to enjoy dinner there:

The Sleep Inn offers complimentary hot breakfast the next morning; nothing
fancy but good and free.

Get up in the morning and head to the O&B, you will be hours ahead of the
traffic jams and have no problem with parking. We arrived early enough to
grab seats in the covered area of the South end zone with a TV right in
front of us and a bathroom right behind.

I'd be surprised if Robey stays.

Second year in a row where a coach has moved a guard to center instead of
playing him.

With two separate line coaches and head coaches having made the same decision,
it seems a sign that he might not see the field as much as was hoped.

I think this is time of year that we may see some transfers from the
football program. Spring practice is over and certain players feel they are
buried on the depth chart and will be looking for greener pastures.

There is already a rumor floating around that Debose will go.

I think it's got more to do with the current economy, gas prices and general

[gatortalk] O & B report

2011-04-12 Thread Charles Simpson
This past Saturday we decided to go to the O&B game and normally I would
want to arrive on Friday evening and return home on Sunday. Because we did
not want to spend money on a 2nd motel night and more meals out we got up at
5 am on Saturday and headed out by 6 am hoping to arrive by 10 am. Our first
clue that this trip wasn't going to go well occurred when we stopped at a
turnpike rest area for a breakfast snack and found the only thing open was
Dunkin Donuts with 70-100 people in line. We bought something out of a
vending machine and headed back out. Our next big surprise came with having
to dig quarters out of console to pay the $8 toll. We had not been on the
turnpike for 20 yrs and I foolishly thought that in 2011 they would take
Visa and MC. Now of course this last bit was self inflicted as I should have
stopped for cash or researched and bought one of those sunpass things.

The next big surprise was the huge traffic jam where the turnpike joins I-75
north. The backup was several miles long and though not completely stopped
it creeped along at under 10mph. They had this same problem back in the
early 90's and apparently have done nothing to alleviate the situation. I
can only imagine what it would be like on a regular gameday. I decided to
get off at hwy 301 and take it and 441 the rest of the way which again was
probably a bad decision on my part because of the regular Saturday traffic
through Ocala etc.

We arrived in Gainesville at 10 minutes before 12 and again to my surprise I
found people and businesses wanted $20-30 to park near the stadium. I was
prepared to pay $10 but I guess I'm out of touch with the times.

We found free onstreet parking down on SW 8th ave and had a long walk to the
stadium. We arrived about half way through the 1st quarter and
unsuccessfully looked for something in the shade as my wife can't take the
bright sun because of medications and it turned out I wasn't very good with
it either. There were of course plenty of seats but the sitting and standing
areas in the shade were packed like sardines.

We did enjoy some of the game but the highlight to us was the halftime
ceremony honoring the Heisman winners. The biggest cheer in the stadium by
far was when Tebow was introduced but Danny also received a large ovation.
Hope Danny didn't stay out in the sun too long with his bald head. I thought
it was very nice that the Spurriers daughter stood in for him.

We left the game a few minutes early and headed over to University ave as I
always like to see what's going on there where businesses come and go like
the tides. We saw David Nelson and Riley Cooper getting ready for an
autograph session at the Gatorshop. They had about a hundred people lined
up so I guess it was a success.

We had a surprisingly good BBQ meal at Kay Bros BBQ in the same center as
Gators Plus. I say surprisingly only because I didn't expect BBQ that good
in a place that mainly caters to students. Being sort of a BBQ fanatic I
have to put Kay Bro's in the definitely return category.

As we were making the long walk back to our parking place a guy driving a
rickshaw type device offered us a ride and I almost took him up on it.

After getting back to the car we drove around town a bit looking at what was
still there (not much) and what was new. We drove through the duckpond area
and around downtown. Our original plans were to go to the Spring Arts
Festival but we were both too tired from the walking and the heat and
decided to skip it .

We then headed down to our motel in Ocala. Because we didn't properly plan
ahead I couldn't find a room at a decent price in Gainesville.

We headed home on Sunday morning and I decided to avoid the turnpike and
head out hwy 40 through the Ocala National Forest and make a side trip to

Charlie

I still hope to retire and live in Gainesville. If so I will go to a few
games a year but I doubt if I would want or could afford season tickets.
Living 4 hours away like we do now makes it very difficult and financially
prohibitive to go up for a game

RE: [gatortalk] 2011 Luxury Season Tickets Available For A Limited Time

2011-04-12 Thread Stephen Manuel
At the risk of being labeled a heretic, for the first time since I became a
season ticket holder in 1981, I serious thought about giving them up this
season.

It wasn't the bad season we had last year, it has more to do with getting a
little older and enjoying other things in life and asking myself is the
money worth it.

Year before last, the wife and I put in a screened in pool with summer
kitchen, I can also put a nice HD TV out there whenever I want, equipped
with Directv to watch any game I choose while cooking, drinking beer and
jumping in/out of the pool.

Over the years, I kept upgrading my seats to where I've been the last 10-15
years, section 7 row 73, between the 30-35 yard line, alumni side. The bill
this year including donation was well over $3000.

Last year at the opener which was at noon, temperature in the upper 90's I
kept thinking what in the hell am I doing here, when I could be cool,
cooking something great to eat, and watching this on a nice HD TV.

Over the years all the booster points I've earned are worth very little, all
the new big money bandwagon fans have overwhelmed the system to the point
that I couldn't get SEC championship tickets the last time we went to
Atlanta, I couldn't get National Title tickets and last year I couldn't get
away game tickets to F$U.

Finally, last year we went to 3 home games, plus the Fla/Ga game I don't
know if I can continue justifying over $3000/year for 4-5 games, when I can
go to any game I want because all the new big money boosters buy extra
tickets they sell on ebay, stub hub, etc.

2011-04-12 Thread Jerry Belloit
This discussion about the Jacksonville Police Department is interesting.
When I was growing up, they were relatively well thought of. It was the St.
Johns County guys who people thought of as the thugs.

I remember that when I was growing up, we had received permission to get the
golf balls out of the water hazards at the Ponte Vedra course. After work,
we went to the course and were diving for the golf balls. With me that
night were the sons of the Duval County sheriff and the Duval County Circuit
Court judge. Apparently, the residents there did not know we had permission
to get the golf balls and they called the police. The St. John's County
police responded and promptly put us in cuffs with guns drawn. Fortunately,
after finally deciding to check out our stories and after some rather strong
suggestions from the Sherriff and Judge, we were released. I am not sure
who was the most frightened by the experience-us or the St. Johns County
officers. Our parents explained to us later about the St. John's county
police in less than glowing terms.

Eh, when I lived in Jax, I used to equate the Duval County PD to a small,
private army. They were big enough to write their own rules, but small
enough to qualify for "thug" status.

Hmmm. I should have kept reading. St. Johns County cops are usually pretty
reasonable so I'm surprised they were even arrested. Now... in Duval
County... they'd probably still be incarcerated. Duval County cops are
generally a$$es.

Larson might still be in trouble since he's on probation. And, really...
why are 19 and 20 year old boys hanging around a bar at 2 AM? No good can
come from that.

Cee, whose 18 year old has probably hung around bars at 2 AM :-/

We are both beginning to sound like Baptist ministers, ya know.

Anyway, I made some false assumptions after reading the earlier report: our
boys weren't in the bar drinking. They said they went in the bar looking
for a wallet they claim to have lost and got too close to a cashier counting
up the evenings cash and were asked to leave by the bouncers.

Nothing was reported missing from the car they were reportedly hanging
around in the parking lot.

My UF law school training tells me these guys may not get charged with
anything by the St. Johns County State Attorney. It depends on whether any
damage was done to the car or other evidence of "attempting to break into an
automobile". Unless they confessed, other than the reports of some already
suspicious bar bouncers, what's the evidence of a crime being comitted?

Billy and the Gator basketball program don't deserve this.

And...it doesn't make any sense. Play basketball and behave yourself and
you'll have a good chance to be a millionaire for the rest of your life.
Or...you could just get so drunk and obnoxious you get thrown out of a bar
and break into some lousy car.

Just sitting here with my head shaking over breakfast.
