Seven times he went to two games in one day, always making it to the second game in time for kickoff and never leaving any game before the final whistle.Along the way, he and Betty White blew past what had been touted as the record for most epic college football road trip ever — two brothers driving 25,000 miles to attend 50 games in 2016.He drove more than 60,000 miles — including 6,000 on a rental car after Betty blew her transmission in Georgia, on the way to a game in Ohio — and was in the stands for 77 games in 75 different stadiums, involving 115 teams.“That’s like 115 religions — 115 sects of our culture, our country,” he said.Started with bus rides to UCF gamesTo understand his love of college football, maybe it makes sense to start with his childhood in Orlando. His parents divorced when he was about 2. His mother worked multiple jobs to make ends meet. In elementary school, he went to an afterschool program that on weekends took kids to UCF football games. This was before UCF built a stadium, back when it played football games off campus at the Citrus Bowl.“They never could fill the stadium,” Chase said. “So if we wanted to go, all we had to do was show up at the local community center. We’d hop on a bus. They’d give us food before the game. We got shirts and would sit behind the goalposts.”He was hooked — and maybe not just on college football, but on the adventure of getting to a game.In middle school, one of the teachers at his school became sort a father figure. He was a UCF grad. So he’d have Chase tag along for games and help with the setting up of another key piece of the college football experience – pregame tailgating. After high school, Chase worked at Disney before heading to Valencia College in Orlando and then UF. While in Gainesville, he not only went to home sporting events, he and his friends often piled in a car and made long road trips. He enjoyed that part of it. The long drive, even if it didn’t lead to the outcome he’d hoped for.“The year I graduated, we went 4-8 and Florida State won the national championship,” he said, adding with a little bit of sarcasm: “So it was a great year.”When he ended up at George Washington for law school, he’d hop in his car and drive the nearly 800 miles back to Gainesville for a game. When he started tweeting about his trips, people followed along. In 2020, when the Gators played at College Station, Texas and he drove from Orlando overnight, through parts of a hurricane, some Florida State fans sent him money via Venmo “because they thought it was the stupidest thing ever.”People also kept sending him Reddit posts of a map of the “ultimate college football road trip.”But who has the time and money to do something like that?In August, he got the time. Dear GatorTalk family,

As you probably know by now, myself, my wife Leslie, and our dog Patches have
successfully evacuated our storm ravaged island home of St. John, USVI.

With some amazing assistance from some of our friends we were able to get from
St. John to Fajardo, PR by boat on Tuesday afternoon, then by bus to a hotel in
San Juan later that night. We had a charter flight to Richmond, VA yesterday,
where we are safely ensconced in a hotel at the present.

Riding out Irma, and witnessing her aftermath were life defining experiences,
which I will be happy to share later for any that are interested, but for the
moment I (we) just wanted to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers in
our behalf as this unfolded.

Much love Gators!

Steve McKibben

have only been a few show stoppers, but they were worth the wait.

I guess I was expecting something like a fireworks display. Most of the
meteors were not that bright and had a very faint tail. Were I live, I get
to see meteors somewhat frequently because of the good viewing conditions.
(I have even seen the northern lights on occasion.)

A meteor every minute is boring? It isn’t like watching ESPN, you know.
Watching celestial events is still exciting. It just doesn’t compete with
all the electric media we get to use today.
It is exciting in its own way.

Unfortunately I got up at 2:45 and watched for about 1/2 hour. It was a
perfect evening to watch—no clouds and I live in the country, so no city
lights. It was boring! I saw a meteor about once a minute and very few were
spectacular. I have a friend that did the same thing but watched until 4:00

[gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] Mike Bianchi in the Sentinel

2014-05-14 Thread Tracy Gill
As requested by Oliver.

My family and I were at the Gator Gathering event Bianchi covered in
Orlando. Coach Muschamp was optimistic but realistic, and he seemed full of
energy. I was impressed that he seemed to speak off the cuff about the
entire roster with emphasis on the players from the local area. It looked
like he was just working from perhaps a one page outline of the team roster
and talked about most players on the 2-3 deep depth chart. He said they'd
be 100% committed to up-tempo offense and that they were working through how
to adapt that when it came time to kill clock at the end of a game. He
said the defense needs to be ready to defend more plays too with the fast
tempo. He spoke a bit about strength and conditioning and how they've
tweaked a few things to try to prevent injuries but tried not to overreact
because there were some previous conditions that drove some of the problems,
esp. with torn labrums. He cheerfully dodged an audience question about the
team's take on crab legs in their training diet by smiling and saying, Next
question..Seriously, next question.

He was asked about orange jerseys and said he liked them remembering his
experience attending UF games in the 80s. But he understood that some
people didn't like being reminded of the 80s and probation. There were four
players from the 80s sitting together and spoke up about how they didn't
appreciate hearing that about their time. Daryl Perry and Tony Jones were
two of the four names. Daryl is recovering from serious illness but is
getting around much better. Bianchi had a nice article about Emmitt Smith
helping Daryl Perry a few years ago if you're interested. Coach Muschamp
seemed to smooth that over, told them they were invited to be around anytime
they wanted, and then spent some time talking to that group of players when
he finished speaking.

He was very engaging during the autograph session and talked with me, my
wife, and my two boys. In that respect, he was the anti-Meyer compared to
my experience with him when UMIII came to Orlando in 2009 - he didn't speak
and barely made eye contact with my son and me. In short, Coach Boom is a
likable, hard-working guy who I hope can get things turned back in the right
direction this year. He makes you want to pull for him to succeed.

Go Gators!

Gators coach Will Muschamp: 'Fans are upset and I don't blame 'em!

Muschamp embraces criticism of UF football program that went 4-8 last

SPORTS COMMENTARY

9:51 p.m. EDT, May 13, 2014

You know it, I know it, but most of all Will Muschamp himself knows it.

He knows if he doesn't win a certain number of games this season, there
won't be a next season for him as the football coach of the
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/college-sports/florida-gators-O
RSPT000172.topic Florida Gators.

And the thing I like about Muschamp is that he is bluntly honest about it.
He not only knows he has to win this season; he understands it

Everybody is kicking us in the ass, and it's fair, Muschamp told me before
taking the stage at the Central Florida Gator Club Tuesday night at the
Plaza Live in downtown Orlando. We have a loyal fan base and they're upset,
and I don't blame 'em. I'm upset, too. To me it's fair - very fair - that
we're being questioned on what we're doing and how we're doing it. We all
realize that 4-8 is unacceptable.

The question is what win total this season is acceptable if Muschamp expects
to keep his job? After interviewing a number of fans at the Gator gathering
Tuesday night, the magic number seems to be 8. I'll even take 7 if you give
me some offense, said Rob Yacabucci, an engineer at Lockheed Martin.

Ah, yes, the offense - which, quite frankly, has been offensive since
Muschamp took over three years ago. Then again, when you're 4-8, it's not
just the offense that gets questioned; it's every facet of the program.
During his address Tuesday night, Muschamp was grilled on everything from
the color of Florida's jerseys to not using the tight end enough to the
Gators committing too many penalties

It's even reached a point where fans and media, because of the incredible
epidemic of injuries last season, have been wondering whether Muschamp's
strength and conditioning staff is doing a poor job. As if coaches are
responsible for the broken bones suffered by players such as quarterback
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/sports/football/jeff-driskel-PESPT0087
76.topic Jeff Driskel last season. I guess we need to have them drink more
milk, Muschamp jokes.

At the end of the day, the only way to change the perception is to win,
Muschamp said. That's all we can do. It's like I told our team: 'We're 4-8.
We need to shut up and have a good

appreciate hearing that about their time.

Go Gators!

 As requested by Oliver…

My family and I were at the Gator Gathering event Bianchi covered in Orlando.
Coach Muschamp was optimistic but realistic, and he seemed full of energy.
I was impressed that he seemed to speak off the cuff about the entire roster
with emphasis on the players from the local area. It looked like he was just
working from perhaps a one page outline of the team roster and talked about
most players on the 2-3 deep depth chart. He said they’d be 100% committed
to up-tempo offense and that they were working through how to adapt that when
it came time to kill clock at the end of a game. He said the defense needs
to be ready to defend more plays too with the fast tempo. He spoke a bit
about strength and conditioning and how they’ve tweaked a few things to try
to prevent injuries but tried not to overreact because there were some
previous conditions that drove some of the problems, esp. with torn labrums.
He cheerfully dodged an audience question about the team’s take on crab legs
in their training diet by smiling and saying, “Next question….Seriously, next
 question.”

He was asked about orange jerseys and said he liked them remembering his
experience attending UF games in the 80s. But he understood that some people
didn’t like being reminded of the 80s and probation. There were four players
from the 80s sitting together and spoke up about how they didn’t appreciate

I’m no recruit-nik, really, but here’s something. I was at Home Depot here
in Orlando about an hour ago, having some keys made. One of the keys is one
of those “Gator” keys, you know, orange and blue with the Gator head. The
guy who was at the register at check out (I was gonna say ‘the guy who was
checking me out’ but that sounded weird) was a young guy about 24 or so.

He saw the Gator key and asked if I liked the Gators, so I said yes. And he
said one of his friends who plays football is committing to Florida and he’s
a really good player. He’s from Immokalee, and their families are real good
friends. So I said who’s the player, and the guy said ‘JC’. I said “JC
Jackson?” and the guy looked at me like he couldn’t believe I knew who
 Jackson was.

He said, yes, JC Jackson, he’s going to Florida, for sure. Then he proceeded
to tell me ALL ABOUT JC’s family and how they were such good people, and the
only reason JC thought about FSU was because JC’s older sister went there at
some point so the family thought JC would like FSU.

But according to this guy, who by the way talked to me for about a half hour
about college football, JC is a Gator, signed, sealed, and delivered, he’s
 ours.

Pretty good answer, Ken. Probably right but it also depends on the
packaging and how old or advanced the transistor is. Need to get the number
off it and look up the data on the tubes of the internet. J As a
currently unoccupied NASA engineer, I could probably have just traveled and
soldered it in for you, but it thankfully looks like I will be getting back
to work soon.at least through mid-January to get me through the bowl season.

The base connection is typically the center lead. The leads should be in a
triangle and the base will be the lowest one. It is not always a ground

In early 1995, I had the pleasure of announcing the birth of my daughter
Olivia. This before the days where dads spent the nights in the hospital room
with mother and child, so I was at home alone and Gatortalk seemed like a
good place for a birth announcement. I think it may have been the first, but
I missed a few years, so who knows.

In fact, my online handle grew out of that pregnancy. If our child were a
girl, her mother would choose the name. A boy, and the choice were mine. My
top three were Shane Matthew, Zebulon, or Jacob (Jake). When given my
choices, my wife looked at me and said that I had better name my online name
Zebulon, because she would never let me name a child that.

Over the years, Olivia has become an accomplished musician, and thankful that
she was never named Zebulon. She has been a member of the All County Band and
Youth Philharmonic on the French Horn, as well as trumpet in the Jazz band.
In her senior year, she became Drum Major at Naples High (home of Gators Nick
Alajajian and Buddy Schulteis). A picture is here:

Ultimately, she graduated high school with a 5.2 GPA, had the third highest
SAT in her high school class, and chose to attend Florida; that gives an idea
of the caliber of UF students these days.

This August, she enrolled at UF. The last few weeks before enrolling were
full of practicing Orange and Blue, Jaws, We Are the Boys and the UF
alma mater on the French Horn. Luckily, as any good father should, I had
multiple versions of each saved to my music library for her listening
 pleasure.

Last week, she auditioned for the band, and made the marching team as a
Freshman. I hadn't realized that the entire band doesn't march at halftime,
apparently marching as a true freshman is a bit of an honor. Here is a shot:

 Viva Drum Major.jpg
 IMG_9838.jpg

When the band spells out Gators, please look for her; she will be at the
 top of the a.

I'm not quite sure of her position in the other formations, but was happy to
learn that she can now play You Can Call Me Al.

Be sure to watch the band, and give an extra holler for the French Horns!

 -Zeb

P.S. Technically, the marching version of the French Horn is called a
Mellophone. The bell of the horn faces forward instead of up, and it is not
played with a hand in the bell. So, if you would rather show your support by
being mellow for the game (you know who you are), that would be fine as
 well!

RE: [gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] Orlando Sentinel - Some Gators fans turn in season tickets

2013-04-11 Thread Tracy Gill
Yeah, it didn't make me happy to share that information, but the reporter
was a friend of a friend, and I just didn't want to be made out to be some
fair weather fan. And I really would rather just give tickets away to those
crummy games to good Gator fans than sell them at a loss to some stranger.
And I've never sold tickets to make money. But having to eat tickets to
several games a year and having trouble even giving them away on occasion
make me head down the path of just getting less and just scrambling to find
an extra ticket or two every once in a while when the whole extended family
wants to attend.

Beth Kassab Local News Columnist Recent Columns

April 11, 2013

I was raised in the Gator faith. So it pains me to say that I can't blame
longtime season ticket holders who are giving up the seats they've had for
decades.

Some Gator fans are making the decision because they feel underappreciated.
Pushed out. Forsaken.

This isn't a sports column. It's a fan column. Because as the deadline to
renew season tickets passed this week, fans were having tough conversations
around local dinner tables.

Going to games with my son was a lot of fun, said Ken Clarke, who
surrendered the four seats he's had in Section 2, Row 12, of Ben Hill
Griffin Stadium for 28 years. I will miss that ... Going to games was a way
to spend 12 hours with a friend talking about football, talking about life.

Clarke didn't make the choice lightly. He even wrote a letter to Athletic
Director Jeremy Foley to explain his reasons.

I have been dismayed at how the Gators have been removed further and
further from the average fan like me, wrote Clarke, a former Sentinel
employee. ... Have Gator athletics and Gator football become so successful
that you no longer feel the need to appeal to fans in the least?

Tough words. Especially for a program that is accustomed to adoration from
its fan base.

Foley must have thought so, too. He called Clarke after reading the letter.

Classy move by Foley, and perhaps a sign that the program recognizes that
some average fans are rethinking their devotion - at least in terms of how
much money they're willing to spend.

Longtime season ticket holders I've talked with are peeved for several
reasons. And we're not talking fair-weather fans who won't settle for
anything less than a national title.

These are fans who were thrilled with last season's surprise 11-2 run,
despite a hard-to-watch (and half empty) Sugar Bowl.

The biggest complaint is the increase in booster fees during the worst
economy of our lifetimes. For many ticket holders, the booster fee has about
doubled since 2007.

Clarke's per seat fee increased from $125 to $250. Some seats that carried a
$400 fee six years ago are now $1,000. The fee in the Touchdown Terrace, a
section in the north end zone that comes with a pre-game buffet, was $1,200.
Now it's $2,200.

Tracy Gill, who has been attending Gator games with his dad since the early
'70s, decided to give up two of his family's six tickets this year.

It's just too much money if we're eating quite a few tickets a year, said
Gill, an engineer at Kennedy Space Center who lives in east Orlando.

Which brings us to another grumble. The Gators' home schedule is typically
six games. Two, sometimes three games end up being against the North Dakota
Scuba Academy or an equally unaccomplished team.

Gill can't give away tickets to some of the match-ups. And the demands of
his job and a family with two young kids mean he can't make it to all the
games.

It's just that burden of trying to feel like we were using all the tickets
was just too much, he said.

Add to that closed practices and boosters who pledge undying loyalty only to
discover their kid wasn't admitted and you have a stew of discontent.

And that's not even counting the thing all universities must contend with:
Fans who opt to skip the trek to campus and watch the game in HD from the
comfort of their couch. No seat-back or sunscreen required.

Gator football spokesman Steve McClain said the final numbers aren't in, but
ticket sales overall are slightly ahead of last year's pace as of the
Tuesday deadline. He said the jump

2013-04-11 Thread Tracy Gill
I've heard the same thing about the Charlotte County Gator Club where my
parents are still involved in what is left of the club.

My problem with tickets is for games like Toledo and Georgia Southern and
Vandy (2-3 games/yr) where if some of my family can't attend and I have
extra tickets, anyone can get them in droves on Stubhub or other resellers
for $10 each so I can't expect to get my money back for the $50 face value
much less the huge booster fee and thus the problem

I can only speak for the Jacksonville Gator Club.

When I was on the Board of the Jax Gator Club in the mid-80s we had to raise
some significant money.the UAA required us to pay for the Cheerleader
accommodations if we wanted them Thursday night for the pep rally, we also
had to pay to feed the band if we wanted them on Friday night or Saturday
for a pre-game event.

We had regular meetings every week during the season and once a month in the
offseason.

We had 400-500 people for a normal meeting during the season and 1200-1500
for the Gathering which was at the end of July every year on a Saturday a
week or two before fall practice started.

We never had an issue getting the head coach or Billy Donovan, or Assistant
coaches whenever we needed them.

The first thing that happened was Spurrier quit coming to our golf
tournament the Monday after the Gathering, that killed a lot of our
fundraising.

Then during Urban Meyer, he quit going to every meeting and the number of
Gatherings was significantly reduced.

The final straw was when UF took over the Gator Clubs, previously each
individual club collected dues, ran their meetings, etc. When UF took over
they said anyone who paid alumni dues was a member and they would remit back
to the individual clubs a certain amount..they would do all the mailings,
collect all the money, etc.they also said they would set the dates for the
Gatherings and who would be the speakers, basically the club would have no
say so about when/where the meeting was going to be.

This devastated the Jacksonville Club, one year UF set the Gathering on a
Friday night in May at 5pm, they sent Steve Addazio as the speaker..we had
maybe 250-300 people and that's a generous estimate. It's has not gotten any
better since, the Gatherings are in May and the attendance is 20% of what it
once was.

Now the Jacksonville Gator Club only meets during the Season and only on
home game weekends.

The Jacksonville Gator Gathering was all about the blue collar everyday fan,
who would pay $25-30 to eat bbq chicken, get a picture with the head coach,
get something signed, get their kids pictured with the coach, etc...

Now all of that is gone, the Jacksonville Gator Club still exists but is a
fraction of what it once was.they have no say so about the Gathering or any
Fla/Ga pregame activites,etc..

You combine the demise of the Gator Clubs and Gatherings with what's
happening with the prices for attending games, you can then understand by
the diehard blue collar fan is not going as often to games, they have been
kicked to the curb IMO..

I followed along (and agreed) with everything you said except the gutting of
Gator Clubs and Gatherings. Can you explain that some? Not sure I'm aware

IMO, when Urban Meyer was there and UF was the King of College Football and

The thinking being let's kick to curb the average fan who has enjoyed their
seats for years at relatively low prices, then we can resell them to newly
minted BULLGATORS at incredibly high prices..for a couple of years this plan
worked.

The Urban Meyer departed, Tim Tebow graduated and the team and economy
tanked..those average blue collar fans figured out that HDTV, cold beer near
at hand along with a clean and uncrowded bathroom were not a bad way to go.
plus they were saving a ton of money..

You combine the ticket price policy with UF gutting the Gator Clubs and
Gator Gatherings

Personally, I’m happy. He was an embarrassment on the sidelines and our
offense reflected it. I was very disappointed in the “pro-style” offense that
he brought, although I will admit that maybe our personnel wasn’t big or
strong enough to run it. Meyer said he wanted the fastest team, and that what
 we are. Small, but quick.

Ok, we said two years to rebuild. Does this set us back further? How long did
 it take Bama? Five years?

I just got back from a weekend camp out for my son's Cub Scout pack. That
really sucks. Let us know if you end up having to have some sort of last
minute fund-raiser to make ends meet.

Troy,

I'm a long time Scout leader down here in Brevard County and the same thing
happened to one of our units a few years ago. It steams me to think about
people stealing from the kids! I'll pass the word down this way for folks
to be on the lookout for equipment marked T-128. Hope you all are able to
scroung enough stuff to make it to your Cubaree.

I hope you all pardon the interruption here. I have been a gator for life,
and attended UF. This has nothing to do with UF. I want to vent about
something that happened today.

I am the Committee Chairman for a Cub Scout Pack that my Son is in.

Last night someone stole the Boy Scout Trailer from our church, and also
broke into our Cub Scout trailer. It is going to be tough to put together
our Cubaree this year. The Cub Scout Pack lost over 8,000.00 worth of
camping gear, and the Troop lost all of their stuff, as well as a 2,000.00
enclosed trailer. If anyone sees a red enclosed trailer that is marked with
Troop 128 Boy Scouts let me know. Thanks for the time.

I'm sorry he's not on our team.

I still don't really understand why the Gators and Cam couldn't have worked
things out. As has been said here previously, he's probably a better player
because he had last year to actually play instead of warming a bench.
However, it's hard to have regrets when you watch him play today.

2010-08-16 Thread Tracy Gill
Think about Jai Lucas who played as a FR on the basketball team and started
with Calathes. But he didn't want to share the PG position and transferred
to Texas. So Calathes leaves after the following year during which Lucas
sat out for transferring. So we needed a PG last year when Lucas would have
been a junior leader on our team. Meanwhile Lucas sits the bench to play 10
minutes a game as a redshirt SO in Texas. The impatience and me, me, me
is unbelievable. There was an article about some DB at FSU in the Orlando
Sentinel the other day who was asked if he had studied some of the great FSU
cornerbacks to whom he is being compared. His genius response that he is
not a past guy, and all he does is focus on me and what I can do to
improve. What arrogance. Dope.

I think that is the aspect or thought that bothers me most with this
instant-gratification philosophy these young athletes have. Often times,
they are just 1 or 2 injuries or 1 or 2 years from being able to contribute
or even start at their respective position. Alot of people seem to not have
any desire to put in their time, work, and just wait their turn. Am I an old
curmudgeon now? :-)

Yes. I was thinking he was a corner - he was a safety.

The coaches got all giddy over Elam and said Elam would start as the fifth
DB in the nickel back. So Elam would most likely replace Ahmad Black next
year.

What if Will Hill leaves this year? Haden could be starting next year .

I became a Gator in 1962 at 12 years old. At the time, I had a Tampa Times
afternoon paper route, and they were running a new subscriber contest for
the paper boys. The winner received a trip to Gainesville with a chaperon
for a football game. I won and my branch manager accompanied me on the trip.
The exact second I stepped out of the shadows and into the stadium, I was so
overcome with the moment, the crowd, and the experience, I became a lifelong
Gator. I am now the administrator of the oldest (since 1989) and largest
(over 750 members) online Gator club in existence - GatorNet.

Went to ESPN the Weekend on Sunday and saw a live interview with Coach
Spurrier by John Anderson. As always he was pretty interesting. Talked
about how he will always be a Gator but is more of a Gamecock right now.
Said one of his favorite wins was Duke beating UT at Neyland. Talked about
one of his most important wins at UF being that win over Bama in his second
game in 1990. He has an amazing memory for detail of past games. He even
rattled off Michigan's record over the last two years in response to a
question about the Big 10. He said the goal for S. Carolina fans was for
their team to sneak in and win the SEC once in a while sort of like how Wake
Forest did in the ACC a few years ago. He talked about how that was
different than UF, UGA, LSU, Bama, Auburn, or UTn fans who think they should
win every year.

He even came out and signed some autographs after the show.

What a week for Tennessee! Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin coached the team
in
the ugly orange uniforms to yet another moral victory, beating Alabama
10-12
when the Tide's gargantuan defensive tackle Terrence Cody (6-foot-5, 354
pounds) busted through for his second blocked kick of the game on a
potential game-winning field goal by Tennessee kicker Daniel Lincoln.

Who needs actual wins when you can get moral victories over the top two
BCS
  teams?

If there is one thing Kiffin has proved at Tennessee, it's that nepotism
can work. The Vols have played some very good teams close this year. The
biggest reason? He was smart (or related) enough to get his father Monte
Kiffin to join his staff. The elder Kiffin, the defensive mastermind
behind
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' famed Cover 2 defense, has the Volunteers
playing
  some stifling D this year.

After the loss to Alabama, Lane Kiffin shockingly opened his mouth in
regard to perceived bias by SEC officials, who failed to penalize Cody
for
removing his helmet after the final blocked kick ended the game. He also
pointed out that the officiating crew called eight penalties for a total
of
68 yards on Tennessee, while Alabama was flagged just once for 10 yards.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive responded by reprimanding the first-year
Volunteers coach, and warning him of a possible suspension if he is
  disciplined again this year.

So in honor of Kiffin's latest reprimand, I'm using a picture of Lane
Kiffin doing what he does best: talking. This week's Caption Planet
selection has the Vols coach giving some important advice to Tennessee
quarterback Jonathan Crompton on the sideline.

Dear Mr Hot Shot Pro Analyst,

All you have to do is get the best athletes from college into the pros.

Take a look at other Gator players running those same plays. How did they do?

Now watch Harvin run the same plays.

The differences are so HUGE - I'll bet even Kiffin can see them - without
having to run his mouth

and those other Gators could start for most other college teams.

That's how special Percy Harvin is.

Or you can talk with defensive coordinators from major college programs that
played against Harvin. Ask them who was the best college football player they
had to defend, other than Mr Tebow.

Go Gators!

Keith

Seeing Through the Smoke of Spread Offenses

By Mike Tanier http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/author/mike-tanier/

Mike http://footballoutsiders.com/info/meet Tanier is a contributing editor
at FootballOutsiders.com http://footballoutsiders.com/ and a co-author of
Pro Football Prospectus.
http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Football-Prospectus-2008-Essential/dp/0452289734

It’s Any Given Saturday in autumn, and the Florida Gators are beating up
another hapless foe. Quarterback Tim Tebow takes a shotgun snap and fakes an
inside handoff to Emmanuel Moody. Tebow then rolls to his right. Just when it
seems as if the big quarterback is going to tuck and run, he floats a pass into
the middle of the field, where Percy Harvin is completely uncovered on a
shallow crossing route. Harvin catches the soft pass, makes a few cuts, and
races for a touchdown.

It’s an exciting play, and it’s a typical page out of Urban Meyer’s
spread-option Florida playbook. Unfortunately, the play causes a major problem
for scouts: it tells us almost nothing about Harvin’s N.F.L. potential.

Spead-option offenses, like the one Meyer has perfected, use fakes and
misdirection to stretch the defense so players like Harvin can get open. The
scheme makes life easy for players. Too easy. In the example above, the fake to
Moody draws a linebacker toward the line of scrimmage. The threat of a Tebow
run draws another defender or two. That opens up the middle of the field for
Harvin, who only has to drift into position. He doesn’t have to run a precise
route or read the defensive coverage. He can simply rely on his raw athleticism
and the design of the play itself.

N.F.L. teams use fake draws, rollouts, and misdirection, too, but pro
linebackers are faster and more capable of sniffing out fakes. To get open
against an N.F.L. defense on the same shallow cross, Harvin might have to vary
his route, slow down to sit in an empty zone, or even change his assignment
completely to avoid the coverage. Scouts aren’t sure if he can do it, because
he was rarely asked to do it in college.

Wide-open spread offenses like the one used by Texas Tech pose similar
problems. Michael Crabtree caught 233 passes for the Red Raiders in two years,
and Graham Harrell threw for over 10,000 yards and 93 touchdowns in two years.
Coach Mike Leach’s offense, however, bears little resemblance to an N.F.L.
system. Harrell and Crabtree might connect on three or four “tunnel screens”
per game: plays in which the wide receiver runs toward the quarterback to catch
a short toss while other receivers create a “tunnel” of blocks. Such plays are
a once-in-a-while wrinkle in the pros.

Harrell and Crabtree also collaborated on lots of five-yard hitches: the
receiver ran to a soft spot in the defensive zone coverage, and the quarterback
delivered the pass just a split second after the snap. Such plays aren’t nearly
as effective in the N.F.L., where defenders can read plays and close gaps more
quickly. Crabtree won’t be able to drift into position against pro defenders:
he’ll need precise footwork and technique to conceal his route and find a tiny
patch of open turf. He may or may not have these refined skills.

The problems caused by spread and spread-option offenses aren’t new, but they
are becoming more prevalent every year. Few top wide receivers come from
pro-style college offenses anymore. The spread-system problem gets worse when
evaluating a lower-tier

Tracy:

We're sorry you're disappointed with our change in packaging and appreciate
the opportunity to address your concerns. Your comments in this regard have
been shared with our marketing department for review.

We understand that change is difficult and sometimes confusing, but we're
still Gatorade, the company that asks: is It in you? Only now, rather than
focusing on the question, we're encouraging consumers like a coach might,
telling them to be tough, bring it, allow no excuses, and shine on. These
new expressions are replacing our former line extension names like Fierce,
for example, which is now Bring It.

We're beginning to re-define what it means to be an athlete and the way
people think about sports drinks through our bold new packaging. The goal is
to invite more consumers to see themselves in our brand, because whether
you're in it for the win, the thrill, or better health, The Gatorade Company
sees you as an athlete.

The most visible symbol of our new attitude is on our packaging, which
elevates the letter G as a new symbol for our brand. G represents the glory,
gutsiness, and greatness of the full spectrum of athletes; it's a badge of
pride that travels beyond traditional playing fields.

We value your loyalty to Gatorade, Tracy, and therefore, we've mailed a
complimentary coupon to you. It should arrive in the mail in about a week.
We truly hope that you'll continue to join us on our quest for G.

The campaign for calling Gatorade by G is silly and embarrassing. It is
difficult to believe a company would throw away all the equity built up in
the current name, Gatorade. Hard to say it any simpler or clearer than that.
