Hey, we'll do our best. I'm hoping the loss of much of their defense

Exactly, Bammy has got to be over-rated besides their butts squeaking with

You're thinking of Martin's. They specialize in Whole Hog. One of my
friends got that, and I tried just a bite. My friend liked it a lot, and I
also thought it had an excellent taste.

As I mentioned, my wife and I tried to save our room for ribs, so we didn't
get to try much of the other offerings. We'll definitely give it the full
treatment next year though. I really enjoy tasting the different types of
BBQ, and speculating on whether the different tastes reflect regional
differences or just that specific pit master. It's the kind of research I
would like to do more of.

If you give it a try, would you please let us know what you think?

Yes, that was me.

It was terrific. Over two days we had six different types of ribs. Dry, wet,
spicy, not so spicy. We also had some excellent brisket and pulled pork, but
we made a decision early on the first day to focus on ribs. It was really a
lot of fun.

I had purchased a Fast Pass, which enabled us to bypass very long lines at
each pit. Basically, for $125, you get credit for $100 worth of BBQ, plus
you get to go on Fast Pass only lines, which were much shorter.

Since we were using our credit for ourselves and our friends, we had no
problem using up the $100 credit over two days.

We're looking forward to doing it again next year. It was definitely
worthwhile. Maybe next year we can get a Gator contingent.

It wasn't just Meyer. Everyone on the team was under more pressure after we
won it all in 2008. They were all tight, all year. Now the pressure to win
it all is off and on Alabama. Let's see how they handle the pressure. I
predict they'll lose 2 or even 3 games this year.

The Gators, of course, will win it all.

2. Urban Meyer is refocused

The more I think about it - the more I think Meyer was a major problem last
year. Hopefully, he will be less stressed and play less stressed (play less
conservative) this year

It wasn’t just Meyer. Everyone on the team was under more pressure after we won it all in 2008. They were all tight, all year. Now the pressure to win it all is off and on Alabama. Let’s see how they handle the pressure. I predict they’ll lose 2 or even 3 games this year.
The Gators, of course, will win it all.

2. Urban Meyer is refocused

The more I think about it - the more I think Meyer was a major problem last year. Hopefully, he will be less stressed and play less stressed (play less conservative) this year

Yes, that was me.

It was terrific. Over two days we had six different types of ribs. Dry, wet,
spicy, not so spicy. We also had some excellent brisket and pulled pork, but
we made a decision early on the first day to focus on ribs. It was really a
lot of fun.

I had purchased a Fast Pass, which enabled us to bypass very long lines at
each pit. Basically, for $125, you get credit for $100 worth of BBQ, plus you
get to go on Fast Pass only lines, which were much shorter.

Since we were using our credit for ourselves and our friends, we had no problem
using up the $100 credit over two days.

We're looking forward to doing it again next year. It was definitely
worthwhile. Maybe next year we can get a Gator contingent.

2010-07-19 Thread Kenneth Beitler
Sorry for the delay in my response. I actually had to do some work this
afternoon.

Thanks Oliver.

I might can share some insight on North Carolina BBQ and Ed Mitchell, "THE PIT"from Raleigh, NC. Although I have never been to "The Pit" there are many places around like his.

BBQ in North Carolina is considered a delicacy like wines are to some other people. By the taste of the BBQ you can often tell where in the state the BBQ was made. People take BBQ VERY SERIOUSLY in NC.

If you had to pick the capital of "eastern NC BBQ" it would be Wilson, NC where Ed is from.

Eastern NC BBQ isa mixture of vinegar and peppers - with a few other minor spices thrown in.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Eastern-North-Carolina-BBQ-Sauce/Detail.aspx

If you are use to a tomato based BBQ sauce - this is a shock at first. However, I've learned to love both types.
Eastern NC BBQ is always pork, rarely pork ribs. Usually whole hog. Usually not smoked - just cooked. You can take just the pork shoulder and cook it this way. The sauce can be held towards the end and mixed in.

After it is cooked - it is either choppedor pulled and then the sauce is mixed in.

I would summarize it as - good - but different.

So if you are traveling down I-95 and around mid North Carolina decide that you want to stop for some BBQ - be prepared - because often they'll look at you funny if you ask for tomato based BBQ sauce. Usually all they have is vinegar/ pepper based.

BTW -another local thing they do ismake a special cole slaw that is put onsandwiches. I've had it on pork and shrimp sandwiches. I first I thought it was wierd and did not do it. But after trying it - it was awesome.

That's what you get in Nashville with a BBQ sandwich. You have to request it
without the slaw if you don't want it.
I'm planning on trying the place here in Nashville, BTW.

I've been to Jim n Nicks Smyrna or Murfreesboro , TN location and remember
it being above average. Big Bob Gibson is very highly spoken of and I've
used his sauce and dry rub many times. Check out www.roadfood.com and you'll
probably find reviews on most of these places.

[gatortalk] Re: BBQ Chicken and places to eat in Gainesville

2008-11-14 Thread jfranl
I posted this a few months back and I don't know how old it is but here it
is again, for what it is worth. Also, in Melrose (15 miles east of the
Gainesville airport) is Blue Water Bay. They have a seafood buffet on Friday
night that is to die for. The food is really good there.

Asian

pretty expensive - date spot, my

* Miya Sushi, and when you do, check out the Korean food they have
there. It's all good and most of it's way spicy.

* Saigon Legend is just a quick walk east of campus. It's decidedly
not fancy but serves a fine bowl of pho.

* Taste of Saigon is more upscale and a bit better, but

* Hanoi Pho is the newest and most authentic.

Pan-Asian

* Liquid Ginger is upscale but reasonably priced, great for dates.

* Chopstix is a little greasy these days but does a surprisingly
good job with Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Malay and more, and you can watch
the alligators glide by on Bivens Arm.

* Bento Cafe has two locations with upscale decor and counter
service. I think of Bento more as a lunch place than a dinner one, though,
unless I'm looking for a quick bite on the way to the movies on Newberry
Road

Mexican

* La Tienda, and the food is as authentic as any you will find this
side of Texas. But don't go there expecting Chi Chi's. This is the real
stuff. Nearer to campus,

* Tortilla Flats. I love the far less authentic burritos at this
place

* Burrito Brothers, but I've never caught that fever.

Indian food

* it's called Indian Cuisine, The lunch buffet costs about $12,
but you won't be disappointed, especially on Saturdays when they usually
have a lamb dish.

Italian

* Amelia's,

* Leonardo's 706 and

* Nero's, but my current favorite is

* Fresco. It's lame for any critic to admit this, but I'm also
partial to - heaven forbid - a chain. I think

* Carrabba's does an amazing job night after night.

Pizza

* Satchel's,

* Blue Highway and

* Leonardo's 706, but none of them deliver as far as I know. For
slices near campus, my pick is I Love

* N.Y. Pizza rather than Leonardo's by the Slice or even the
legendary Italian Gator.

Cuban

* Virtually Cuban. I like the Ropa Vieja at

* Fritanga Latin Grill, and the Picadillo at

* La Familia Last but not least, if you must eat lunch on campus, by
far the best and most healthful place for my money is the

* Arrendondo Room on the 4th floor of the Reitz Union. It is not
open at night or on weekends, but it offers a lunch buffet and salad bar for
around $8 including drink.

Dave Carlson's guide to ethnic food in Gainesville

Virtually Cuban co-owner Shawn Nichols lifts the press on a Cuban sandwich
in the restaurant's kitchen Monday May 05, 2004.

I know it's against your better judgment because I'm old, the way over 30
sort of old.

I'm so old that if you believe you can't trust anyone over 30, you would
have stopped trusting me before you were born.

But you should trust me now anyway, even as I give you some really old
school advice - clip this column, or bookmark it, because you're going to
want it later.

This is about food, the staff of life, or at least the stuff of life. Sooner
or later, and it probably will be sooner, you're going to get tired of all
that faux food they serve on campus.

Burger King, Moe's, Wendy's, Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A may seem like heaven
now, but it won't take long to get dull. In a week or two, or a month or two
for the truly palate dead among you, you'll be looking for a change.

That's when you should pull out this column and follow my instructions very
carefully.

Want Chinese food? You won't find much in the way of Chinese in this town.
Let me rephrase that. You will find many Chinese restaurants; you just won't
find many good ones. Mr. Han's is the exception.

Think Japanese and you will be much happier.

Your friends all will tell you about Dragonfly Sushi, and they are not
wrong. Dragonfly has very good food and is a great place to see and be seen.
It's a very popular - and pretty expensive - date spot, but my advice is to
try Miya Sushi, and when you do, check out the Korean food they have there.
It's all good and most of it's way spicy.

We are fairly well blessed here with Vietnamese restaurants. All of them are
decent. Saigon Legend is just a quick walk east of campus. It's decidedly
not fancy but serves a fine bowl of pho. Taste of Saigon is more upscale and
a bit better, but Hanoi Pho is the newest and most authentic.

There are some Japanese and Chinese restaurants on Southwest 13th Street (US

After many years of not attending in person, I managed to get 2 tickets to
the BBQ Chicken game in Gainesville, and I need to find out where the best
place to park is. Any suggestions? I will probably arrive in Gainesville
around 1pm or so. Anyone going to meet up? Let me know. Thanks, Troy

It always depends on when we lose a game, Randy. As to weather, early is
hot; late may be cold. I can always dress for cold, but they don't let me
take off enough clothes to be cool.

Maybe we ought to schedule the 2010 GatorNet Cookout for later in the

there was at the end of September.

take off enough clothes to be cool.

Maybe we ought to schedule the 2010 GatorNet Cookout for later in the
season? Seems like there is more interest in going to Gainesville now that
there was at the end of September.

I am coming over with my son and wife...and my friend and his wife from
Chicago. I am not sure yet if we will have time to meet up with any
Gatortalkers...but will try my best to stop by the tailgate locations.

I would appreciate it if you guys can suggest good places to dine after the
game (we have a couple vegetarians too in our party). On the Border...is
that a good one?

around 1pm or so. Anyone going to meet up? Let me know. Thanks, Troy

Avoid US 301. It is not only loaded with speed traps, Lawtey, Starke,
Waldo, but can get congested in Starke and might take an hour to get
through.

Head east on I-10 to MacClenny and go south. You will wind up on NW 34th
Street. Turn east at 2nd Avenue and go to Golf View and enter the community
and park on the curb for free. It's a great walk to the campus from there.

Good luck on getting into any restaurant to eat following the game.

 completely different doesn't it?
