Why do we want Texas AM, other than getting exposure in Texas? Is that
sufficient? (Maybe the conference just wants all the teams where Bear Bryant
was a HC).

Really, I wonder what the formula for deciding whether a team can (at least)
pull its own weight in the conference, financially.

How much more is the conference's television contract worth with UF than
without? It's speculative, but I assume the conference execs are doing a
similar exercise with all the potential adds.

Interesting that back in the early '90s, the conference first wanted F$U and
scUM, not Arkansas or USC. It turned out better this way for the conference, I
think. It was the schools' lucky day when USC and Arkansas got invited to
join. It was the conference's lucky day when F$U and scUM said no.

If we add Texas AM, and feel the need to add a team from the eastern side of
the country, I think Clemson would be the best fit, among those being
mentioned. Maybe because (I think) they actually sell out their stadium, and
seem to be as football-crazy as the rest of the conference. Of course, if it's
all about adding media markets, the it will probably be VT.

One additional east team that's supposedly in the mix is Virginia Tech.

The problem with any 16 league team is that you could play only one team
from the other division in any given year. The one team would have to be on
an 16 year rotation with playing them twice in the 16 years.

I have changed my mind about F$U and even Miami. F$U adds nothing to the
SEC. Miami would add a major Hispanic TV market but I am not thrilled with
having such a poorly attended team.

Interestingly, I would argue that Miami made a grave mistake giving up on
the Big East. They were able to recruit the Northeast. Since they lost the
TV coverage in the Northeast, their recruiting has gone south.

If we stuck with only Texas and Texas AM, an interesting pick might be
Duke and NC. It would completely change the SEC basketball program and it
 would add Charlotte’s TV market.

The conference could just re-align. Stick a couple of teams currently in the
West in the East.

The question is: which teams?

RE: [gatortalk] SEC adds Texas and some others

2010-06-12 Thread Jerry Belloit
I would favor Texas, Texas AM, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. Add them to
LSU, Mississippi, and MSU, and Alabama for the West, the rest for the east.

If we stuck with only Texas and Texas AM, an interesting pick might be Duke
and NC. It would completely change the SEC basketball program and it would
add Charlotte's TV market.
