2005-09-29 Thread sameer25mmumbai
Overused plots:
1.) A human male becomes pregnant.
2.) Earth is threatened by an asteroid, and a space mission is
mounted to save the planet
3.) The rightful monarch or long-lost heir is restored to the throne
Overused settings:
1.) Alien races who differ from us only in skin color and/or facial
features.
2.) Bad guys who miss everything they shoot at
3.) Entire cities whose buildings use the same architectural design

Overused Plots and Storylines

Ships always seem to be using propulsion even though it's a waste of
energy. When spaceships turn suddenly, crew members tend to fall over
even though the source of gravity is comming from the floor.

Characters get frozen when they float in outer space.

Characters can survive in outer space by holding their breath.

After being removed from a place/artifact that prevents aging, the
character's biological progress attains unbelievable speed and he
grows old quickly.

All Aliens seem to understand human body language (ex shaking head),
despite that even humans sometimes have difficulties comprehending
the non-verbal communication when confronted with foreign cultures.
When ships lights on fire, the flames are visible in outerspace, even
though there's no oxygen.

After a ship blows up its debris scatter, but don't damage any other
ship despite being large and traveling at high velocities.

When a scene comes up on a ship yard in space, the debris of the ship
stay still, even though their inertia should have carried them
through space at a constant velocity.

When a laser misses in space, it ends abruptly instead of continuing
to go through space until it hits something else.

The person with special powers never seems to use them for anything
fun or practical.

The entire Alien Species is united under a single ruler/ruling body,
not having been divided into different countries or territories.

Post-cataclysmic rag-tag armies struggle to kick the Rooskies out of
the good ol' US of A.
Post-cataclysmic rag-tag armies struggle to survive against gangs of
bandits, mutants, cyberpunks, bikers, etc.

The rag-tag rebel army/fleet struggles valiantly to overthrow the
Evil Empire.

The Good Guys travel through time to stop a historical Bad Guy,
usually Hitler.

The Bad Guy travels through time to kill the Hero in his childhood,
or to prevent him from ever being born.

The Chronocops travel in time to catch a Bad Guy who escaped into
some other era.

Scientists work feverishly to develop a cure for the Supervirus or a
weapon to stop the Invincible Bad Guys.

An alien:
Is stranded on earth;
Befriends a human child or falls in love with an earth gal;
Is pursued by shadowy malevolent Pentagon officials under the
pretense of national security;
Uses his/her/its alien powers to defeat the shadowy malevolent
Pentagon officials, making them look foolish without really harming
them;
Makes teary farewell and returns to its home planet.

A virtual reality program is activated, and the distinction between
reality and the program becomes confused or indistinguishable.

People connect their brains directly to computers and get dependent
on them.

Aliens travel a zillion miles to loot the earth of resources which
exist in far greater and much more easily exploitable quantities on
the many uninhabited bodies they pass on the way to earth.

A complex computer system spontaneously becomes self-aware.

A couple files an application to the government for permission to
conceive a baby.

A human falls in love with a robot.

A robot falls in love with a human.

UFO abductions.

Brain-controlling parasites attempt to wrest control of human race.

Aliens put someone on trial for the sins of humanity.

A high-tech amusement park goes lethally berserk.

Death from old age turns out to be due to some simple, single cause,
leading to an easy immortality treatment, with consequent
catastrophic social implications.

A great hunter decides that humans are the most entertaining prey of
all, and visits Earth to bag a few.

Psychedelic drugs give somebody magical power over space, time and
reality.

Aliens with completely incomprehensible motivations make war on the
human race/invade earth.

The bureaucratic/reactionary mindset stands in the way of scientific
progress. A researcher overcomes it through ability, purity of heart,
and use of the scientific method. Or not.

Two hostile factions colonize a planet within walking distance of
each other.

The government ships criminals off to other planets.

A human male becomes pregnant.

An android discovers emotions and loses control.

A young researcher:
Gets a job at a Mega-huge Corporation or Ultra-secret Government
Agency;
Learns that the employer's latest discovery has a Nasty Side Effect
or involves some obvious human rights abuses;
Confronts the employer, who casually dismisses the researcher's
concerns and chides her/hi

g_b DANDRUFF

2005-09-29 Thread jimmy khan

DO YOU REALLY HAVE DANDRUFF? Before you start treating your hair for dandruff, make sure you really have dandruff. Sometimes a flaky scalp may be caused by too much sun, or excessive use of hair dryers. It can also be caused by the use of soaps on the hair, or harsh shampoos which do not wash out easily. But if you use a gentle shampoo plus conditioner like Sunsilk, you needn't worry. Avoid home remedies as many of them can do more harm than good. YOUR COMB /BRUSH AND DANDRUFF Never use the brush or comb of the person suffering from dandruff as it is dangerous and contagious. Likewise, make sure that you wash your comb/brush after every shampoo if you have dandruff yourself! Many medicines, medicated soaps and shampoos are available to counter dandruff, but the most effective is cleanliness of hair. Brush your hair thrice a day and shampoo at least once a week. While washing your hair, take care the water does not trickle down your face. There
are chances that you may get pimples. HOME REMEDIES FOR DANDRUFF • Add six spoonfuls water, two spoonfuls pure vinegar and apply it on the scalp with cotton wool before going to bed. Tie a towel around your head to protect the pillow. Wash your hair next morning. After shampooing, rinse again with vinegar water. Continue this once a week for at least three months. • Mix a spoonful of lemon juice with two spoonfuls of vinegar and massage on the scalp. Wash your hair with an egg shampoo after this. • Soak fenugreek (methi) seeds in yogurt overnight and apply the curd on your scalp for half an hour before washing in the morning. • Hair washed with methi seed paste prevents dandruff, falling hair, baldness and dandruff keeping the hair long, healthy and black. Just soak the fenugreek seeds overnight in water to soften the seeds and grind in the morning to make paste. Before hairwash, apply this paste on scalp and hair and leave it on for half an hour.
Wash off with shampoo later. EGG PACK FOR DANDRUFF WORRIES Beat two eggs and add two tablespoons of water to it. Wet the hair and apply the egg mixture over the hair. Now massage your scalp and let the mixture on for ten minutes to fifteen minutes. Then rinse the hair with lukewarm water. This will keep both dandruff and hairfall problem away from you. Regards

g_b my visit to ice house contd..

2005-09-29 Thread idont likeit
hi guys,

just took a longer gap than expected for this article.
but could nt help. now, i wud like to present the more
interesting part we went through that day at the ice
house.

as the first section talked about the building itself,
we went on further to a section that talked about
indian history. "indian history" -- not that pedantic,
it was indian history as seen by vivekananda himself.
it was indian history that could give us strength if
we look back. a gallery that talked everything since
the time of the upanishads, everything that we need
know, not just to be proud of, but to remember, reckon
and may be rejuvenate. there were graphics that talked
about vyasas, bhaskaras, paninis, tansens, tyagarajas,
ashokas, ... so we had enough philosopy, since, math
and medicine. we had the power that no one had and we
still have though not to that extent. the power to
know the self, the power to relinquish it and the
power to go beyond it. havent u heard of buddhist
monks who immolated themselves sitting still, during
vietnam war, it is that kind of power, haven't you
heard of a priest who scared Alexander with their
power of self when he invaded india, it was that kind
of power. haven't you heard of thousands of saints of
nirvana who come out of nowhere to kumbh mela, whose
reference for space and time were just the sky and the
earth. it was that kind of power.

It is power that gives us insight to go beyond
observation-inference. finally help not to satiate
just the desires, but to satiate all the self. Apart
from this, i was happy to know we were doing good
mundanely too. great wealth, arts and armies enough to
have conquered the then worlds outside india. And one
more thing which you would be made to awe about in
that gallery is that, with all that we had, we hadn't
exhibited a bit of hegemony over others as the west
always did.

I just thought, where is all of that and what are we
now. where to look for. to go to the west, make money,
learn science, tech, gain accolade or to sit here and
mediate. just how about combining the best of both.
cant we have Einstein's coming out every other day?.

..ok. the next section was about vivekananda himself.
let me write about that in the next and finale of the
sequel.

regs
sam

recall first part

hi,

last week end an old college mate of mine was visiting
me after quite long time. we just thought why meet at
anyone's house but choose some public place. he
suggested that we go to ice house and then to beach.
this "ice house" or "vivekanadar illam" as it is
offcially called is a beautiful ancient building opp
to the beach. i had spent around 15 yrs in chennai but
never been there and this was the firs time. there was
a trivial entry fee of rs.2 and we were in. so much
interesting information i found there. basically the
building is around 130 yrs old and now it serves a
memorial for swami vivekananda for he stayed and
meditated there for around 15 days just before his
chicago convention.

there were different sections in the building
exhibiting about the building itself, indian
history, vivekananda's story and more. they had lots of
good information and surprsises. i used to wonder why
it is called the ice house. one display had the
answer. towards the end of the 19th century, a
merchant used to import ice all the way from uk in
ships and store it there salted. oops, they used to
import ice? and they they cud be stored for months?
that too in chennai???. i saw a pic of the building
when it was constructed. the beach was just next to
the building and waves lashing on it. now in just 130
yrs, the sea has receded by around 200 metres and we
have a main road there and a big strech of fine sand.
and just one more surprise about the building. i saw a
pic depicting its condition just before 1999 when the
state govt used to be responsible for it, lemme tell
u, it was nothing less than dilapidated. and then
ramakrishna mission took charge of it. now the
building is so good condition. but the irony is that,
the mission is paying to the govt rs. 3 k per
month for all this service.

then we went on to contemplate the actual treasures of
the building.mm, it is getting late. i have lots
to tell. i will cotinue in the next mail. till then.
take care. bye guys.

g_b Tool Size????

2005-09-29 Thread Buddha Speaks

We often come accross a question when we are on chat
"Whats us TOOL Size"
How funny it seems at first instance.
What are we trying to achieve , whats the purpose of this chat.
just to get to know others, befriend someone, search for love / companionship, life parters?
And suddenly ask this silly question "TOOL Size ?"

If that what you too ask for , then my dear friend try and refine your chat rules , just for the sake , that you are a human and we have to behave like one.
Correct me if i say that "Asking for TOOL size and the deciding for companionship " is it justified in any sense.
If thats so then the following lyrics from 98 degrees just proves itself a mockery to love and relationship

Enjoy the Lyrics.

"One thing I'm sure ofIs that we will always beEven though the roadSeems to get a little roughIt's for you I liveI can do anythingAnd it will never be too muchIn my darkest hour you are there to light the wayAnd when I'm down you always life me up againYou know me better than I know myselfYou comfort me and let me knowWith you I'm gonna win
Walk with me, hand in handWe will help each other understandHow to get throughThere will never be a dayThat we'll grow apartSo, we'll forever beTogether, hand in hand
Sometimes I'm wrongAnd even in that caseYou didn't go awayYou stayed right next to meAs time goes onI realize that you're for meAnd I will love you for eternityIn my darkest hour you are there to light the wayAnd when I'm down you always life me up againYou know me better than I know myselfYou comfort me and let me knowWith you I'm gonna win "

To all my friends out there.
Never ever break a heart.
And to those who have a broken heart, believe me, you are not alone.
Take care

g_b Can U bring it back to life???

2005-09-29 Thread Buddha Speaks

It's time again to write the words,i'm not brave enough to say,I need to tell you how I feel,If i'm to see you another day.
Time has passed and things have changed,But this time it's for the best,I feel something i've not known before,But my hearts still not at rest.
I've learnt alot these past few months,Now I feel i've been abused,Now I feel these people aren't my friends and I'm just being used.
After all that we've been through it's not hard to understand,Why my heart stil feels this way,Why I can't meet it's demand.
You'd probably never guess it,But this is how I sometimes feel,I can't beleive you'll be there for me,Nor that our friendship's real.
My insecurities are still here, they often lead my thoughts astray,Do you know what it's like to feel your fears eating you away?
There are things I can't let go, that still make me feel like dying,Make me wish I was brave,Brave enough to just end it.
But when I put my arms around you,I feel my troubles go away,But whenever you're not near me,I fear that things won't stay this way.Sometimes I lay awake and wonder,How you make me feel the way I do,I wish I could do the same for you,But I have wounds that need to heal.
Long ago, I told you a part of me had died.If you could read my heart, you'd know how hard i've tried.
That part of me still remains,And still hurts me like a knife,What I really need to know is..Can you bring it back to life?

g_b from Proceed At Your Own Risk: the coming out catalyst

2005-09-29 Thread Vikram
A moving story on the people who can become the unexpected catalysts
for our coming out. Its from the very excellent Proceed At Your Own
Risk blog. You can read it there with accompanying pix (and general
eye candy) through the link below, but to make it simpler here's the
text.

I had a catalyst of sorts too, and perhaps not the most politically
correct one. It was a book, Trying To Grow by Firdaus Kanga, a novel
about growing up in Bombay as a severely disabled, gay (most of the
time) Parsi man. The book was wonderful, charming, funny, moving, the
works. It also seemed to be a thinly fictionalised account of Kanga's
life. After all, he was severely disabled and Parsi.

In the book the protagonist is quite openly gay, a fact he learns
from his reactions to his sister's copy of Playgirl. He also falls in
love with his hunky neighbour, they have a brief (unsuccesful)
makeout session, and he even tells his parents. True, in the book, he
becomes straight after a bit, but that was the point at which the
book collapsed and I was pretty sure Kanga was gay in real life.

The book affected me because it was the first book with an open gay
character set in the sort of Bombay background I was familiar with.
But I'm rather ashamed about the real reason why it was a catalyst
for me to come out. Plainly put, it was because, I told myself if
this guy has all these problems and is still openly gay, what excuse
do you have. As I said, not politically correct and my only defence
is that years later when I met Kanga I told him this and he laughed
and laughed. (No one can be less politically correct about being
disabled than he is!)

Of course, it wasn't that simple. Having decided to come out, I
sprang it on a couple of straight friends who were mostly nonplussed
about it and didn't react. The problem was I couldn't find gay people
to tell I was gay, a problem which persisted for quite some time -
this was all way before there was Gaybombay! Still, finally it
happened, I met other gay people, I told my parents, my friends,
anyone who matters to me and now my feelings about sexuality is where
it should be, no longer something to bother about much.

Perhaps a catalyst isn't always needed. I'd like to think that the
greater openness about homosexuality now and the social spaces
created by the many queer organisations serve as all the catalysts
that would be needed. And anyway, I can just imagine Firdaus' rude
remarks if I said that he was the wind beneath my wings. But his book
did help me, like the Chicago cop helped Richard in the story below.
And for that, many thanks,

Vikram

THE CHRONICLES: THE CHICAGO COP AND THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER
HIV played a dominant role in my "closet" life during the Eighties.
Not only did it become the most compelling of my many rationales for
remaining closeted, it provided a completely new and almost nuclear-
level power source for my fear of sex, I had always believed that
coming out and sucking dick would destroy me and now the media had
provided me with scientific proof.

The headlines were clear: Come out and die.

HIV also robbed me of any remaining hope for a happy life and
certainly contributed to the utter despair that led me to choose
suicide on the event of my 40th birthday. My life half over, AIDS
nipping at feet like a rabid dog, I saw no reason to continue. I
felt that my survival was contingent on some degree of hope, hope
that one day I would find the courage to come out and end the
nightmare and psychic horrors of closet life. AIDS has eradicated
the hope. AIDS, like some impenetrable jungle, seemed to have
completely overgrown what I believed was an already very dangerous
road.

But in the middle of this nightmare, an unlikely and unpredictable
source, a Chicago cop, planted the seed of new hope. At the time, I
didn't see it and didn't understand it, but this man whose name I
can't ever remember became one of my heroes..

In 1983, I was charged with designing a marketing communications
strategy to support the launch of the first major pharmaceutical to
come out of recombinant biotechnology. This was to be an exciting
time, a scientific milestone, a major coup for the company concerned,
a major political moment for the Food and Drug Administration, a
professional high point for me and an intriguing breakthrough for a
patient population that had heretofore been helpless to the ravages
of a particular disease.

The disease was glibly called the Purple People Eater in certain
homophobic quarters. It was Kaposi's Sarcoma and was easily
recognized by purple lesions that would appear randomly on the
patient's skin, sometimes hidden by clothes, but often not. It was
one of the first identified physical manifestations of AIDS. And one
that was impossible to hide at a time when fear of AIDS was almost at
an hysterical level. This was a time when mo

Subject: g_b KNOW YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS-GAY
  SPECIFIC INFORMATION:
  courtesy gb=KNOW YOUR RIGHTSGAY
SPECIFIC INFORMATION:1. If you find yourself being interrogated, it is
not necessary or advisable to describe your sex life or sex acts that you
commit. If someone keeps insisting, respectfully say "It is my private
business", or suggest that its none of their business. Though some
homosexual acts are a crime in India, it is NOT A CRIME TO BE GAY. if
the fact of your sexual orientation comes out, it does not make you a
criminal in the eyes of the law, even with the presence of Sec 377
I.P.C. I think not knowing this fact is the ESSENCE of the fear and
ignorance of gay men that leads to their harassment, blackmail etc.,
and I cannot overstress this point enough.2. Also, if someone
threatens you with Sec 377, know that you have a VALIANT SOLDIER on your
side, called Section 389. Section 389: Offence: Putting a person in
fear of accusation of an offence punishable by death, imprisonment for
life or imprisonment for 10 years IN ORDER TO COMMIT EXTORTION.
Punishment: Imprisonment for 10 years and fine. If the offence is an
unnatural offence, the punishment for the extortion attempt is an
imprisonment for life! What this means is that if someone threatens to
have you arrested under 377 in order to blackmail you or extort money you,
you can turn right round and tell him, "I will have YOU arrested under
section 389 for threatening me with extortion!"3. Will the police
call my parents? If you find yourself in trouble and the police threaten
to phone/meet your parents, mention that you are an adult and not a minor.
Say that you are capable of handling your own affairs, and that they
should not be involved. However there is nothing you can legally do to
prevent them from contacting your parents in the course of their
investigation. But if they are contacting your parents with the sole aim
of extorting money from them/scaring you into paying up, then that is a
crime.4. While filing a complaint, giving a false name and address is
an offence. It is necessary to give your name and contact
information.5. If they demand to have your mobile phone, wallet or any
other object, ask for them to make the demand in writing, take their
signed written demand and then hand the phone etc. over.6. If a
policeman says he is going to arrest you, he should be wearing a visible
name tag with his id and designation.7. Respectfully ask for the
policeman's id and take down all the details on the ID card and keep them
with you. Address the officers as "Sir" always, however low his rank may
be, or however high your social status may be. 8. If you get a
blackmailer punished for harassing you, and he gets out on bail, don't
worry. A precondition of the bail is that he cannot intimidate you, or
else the bail stands cancelled.9. Anyone can file an FIR, even a
friend of yours if you cannot at that moment. Also you cannot be made to
run around from one station to another. As mentioned previously the
nearest police station has to take the complaint and then forward it to
the jurisdiction police station. 10. If you get into trouble on a
local train, or the tracks, or the stations - the offence comes under the
jurisdiction of the railway police and they have to be contacted. The
railway police booth station is usually on the platform and just outside
the station, any railways staff or the food stall-wallahs will direct you
to it.11. Do not use obscenities to show that you are not scared. Do
not threaten to contact some mythical higher-ups in the police. You will
bring out hostility in the cops and make matters worse.12.
Preferably talk in Marathi, as the police force is
overwhelminglyMaharashtrian. If you can, take along a respectful friend
who speaks good Marathi.13. If you hire a lawyer, tell them
everything about yourself, including your sexual orientation. it will help
them to fight the case better. Besides they are obligated to respect your
privacy and confidentiality.14. Don't start with the assumption of
corruption and run around trying to bribe everyone. A vast number of
police offers are honest and clean. Stand tall and have no fear. You are
not in the wrong simply for being gay.15. Tell your gay friends
what's happened to you. Share it with each other and with mailing lists
like Gaybombay. It will enable others to help you, support you, as well as
will prevent others from having the same problem. It will also enable us
to catch the blackmailers and get them punished.16. Don't tease or

Parties for HIV+ men may pose health risks

Thu Sep 29, 2005 9:32 AM IST

By Patricia Reaney

LONDON (Reuters) - Parties for HIV positive gay men to meet others
infected with the virus may help to prevent its spread but scientists said on Thursday the events may also raise the risk of exposure to superinfections.

So-called "POZ Parties" began in New York in the 1990s as informal
gatherings for HIV positive gay men. Since then, the idea has spread to canada, Australia and Western Europe.

Dr Michael Clatts and his colleagues at the National Development and
Research Institute in New York, who questioned 115 men from 10 POZ parties in 2003, fear the events could lead to the spread of drug resistant strains of the virus.

"Unprotected sexual contact with HIV partners and status unknown partners outside the POZ Party venues heightens concern for diffusion of HIV superinfection," clatts said in a report in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Drug-resistance, when treatment no longer works, has become a problem in wealthy countries where antiretroviral drugs have been available for several years. Viruses mutate or change and can become resistant to one or more antiretroviral therapies.

Websites and mailing lists say where and when the parties occur. In some cities they are held several times each month.

Men questioned in the pilot study said they attended the events beca+use it eliminated the need to reveal their HIV status. Others admitted they were prompted by the desire to have unprotected sex.

"Status disclosure is something that positive men find difficult,
particularly early on in the course of HIV infection. POZ parties by
definition take some of that burden off," Clatts, a behavioural
epidemiologist, explained in an interview.

The scientists said the high rates of unprotected sex at the venues and having multiple partners also increased the risk of other sexually transmitted infections in men whose immune systems were already compromised.

"Public health needs to get access to these environments so we can bring better education to these populations," Clatts added.

About 70 percent of the POZ Party attendees were white men, according to the study. They had been HIV positive for as little as two months or as long as 20 years. The vast majority, 97 percent, only had sex with other men. Condoms were almost never used at the parties.

Two-thirds of the men who were questioned were taking antiretroviral
treatments.

"Additional research is needed in order to elaborate our understanding of the nature of these emerging sexual environments, and the role that they have in sexual partnering of HIV positive men having sex with men," Clatts
added.

2005-09-29 Thread Mukesh
If you take it with a pinch of salt, it isn't saying anything untrue.

"Local councils have a discretionary responsibility for providing
public toilets but many have closed them down, blaming costs,
vandalism and cottaging by gay men."
<\quote>

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4285740.stm

Public has taken it for granted that even toilets as the top
prioritized hang out places for gay men. Suffice it to say that a
toilet at one floor of 'x' department in our school is infamously
known well among the local gay men here for quickie jobs. Seriously,
since this building is out of the campus, local gay community seem to
use this for other non-washroom activities, and heck, this place is
even explicitly mentioned in the local gay website! Sheesh.

In any case, I don't understand the reason for this article to be publised at
all. Have they published names of places where straight men go cruising for
women? So why this discrimination against gay men? What was the journalist
trying to report? I don't get it.

I always thought NY Times was a gay-friendly publication, but I guess this
article belies that view.

What do people in NY and elsewhere think of this article?
