These guys have told us they have no problems with GB parties, but they are clear that they want to make more money. So for weekend parties it was going to be a sharply increased rate. We didn't want to accept this, or at least not now, but we didn't want to wait too long to have a party either, so we compromised on a Thursday at the old rate. For the record, we have frequently held parties on weekdays and that;s how it happens in most places - Delhi's Pegs Pints night is on Tuesdays. Weekend parties is a recent luxury for us and as our current problems in finding places shows, its not one we can count on having.I think the real problem is that guys like you seem to be taking the GB parties for granted, without realising the problems we
still face organising them. Please be assured that we don't do things "at a kick of a thought" but do our best to come up with parties that balance the best interests of everyone, and that is never going to be easy,Vikram

 Vikram,

First of all let me tell you that I don't Yell at anyone. I very
casually asked this question like any other member would ask to his
 close friend.

It was not any kind of Interrogation either (as you felt so).

So plz. mind your language, especially when you correspond in a
public
 forum.

As with most list disputes this one seems to centre on a matter of
tone. I certainly did find your tone, as I have found your tone in
past mails as rather abrasive and demanding. Perhaps I'm wrong or
perhaps that's just the way you normally communicate - apologies if I
read too much into it.

And what makes you say that 'Guys Like Me take GB parties for
granted'

I do think this does happen particularly on the part of people who
did not experience the party scene before GB started organising its
parties or haven't lived outside Bombay or Delhi and seen what its
like without an organisation like GB to organise events.

Please note I don't make any claim that GB parties are that
wonderful. I've personally long got bored with them, but I still help
organise them for the benefit of the community (more precisely, to
support Dee who does all the real organising). The GB parties are
organised by a small bunch of guys who have other commitments on
their time, so they are the best we can organise in the time we have
and the spaces that become available for us.

We don't expect lavish gratitude for this, but we would like people
to recognise that these aren't quite the same as professionally
organised parties. These are community parties, organised by and for
members of the community, and some appreciation of this would be
nice. We welcome suggestions and constructive criticism, but not
demands and your mails do have a tendency to come out out sounding
like that.

When any such GB parties are arranged, do you arrange them for
charity? Or rather let me ask you whether you throw such parties to
the entire community out of your own pocket? Certainly not.

I don't quite know what you're asking here, but I can say that none
of the GB organisers benefits personally from the parties. We don't
even get in free, since we all pay the full price. The parties are
charged at the rate the club charges us or sometimes there is a small
margin added on which goes to fund the film festivals and other GB
events, plus acts as a buffer for when parties fall short of minimum
numbers - our deal with clubs is that we guarantee them a minimum
number of people and compensate them if this falls short, so believe
me we are very interested in plenty of people coming!

Also when anyone comes to attend these parties, he or she pays for
it,
as nothing comes for free in this world.

Nothing comes free, but things can come more expensive. Hop across to
Delhi and see the sort of price gouging that happens for commercially
organised farmhouse parties over there.

Many of us too actively participate in most of the GB events. And I
feel we have every right to know about the factor that caused the
change to our normal routine of having GB parties...Its as simple as
 that...

And rather than creating such a silly dispute, you should have
courteously informed everyone about the reason for changing the day
 for this event.

As we would have done if we had known in advance that the party would
be shut down. But if you've been reading the papers you would have
seen that the Velocity shut down was part of a city wide crack down
on pubs and that none of them knew in advance. So it would have been
a little difficult to inform people in advance. We did give an
explanation the day after.

Vikram

g_b rules for a happy retirement

rules for a happy retirement Research reveals it's how you manage your time
and money that counts, not just how much you've got.

NEW YORK (MONEY Magazine) - What can you do to ensure you'll be happy after
you retire? The answer might seem obvious: Just sock away as much as you can
in your 401(k). The bigger your nest egg, the happier your retirement will
be, right?

Not quite. Having a bundle of money certainly helps, but not nearly as much
as you might think, according to a growing body of research on retirement
satisfaction.

*taxable accounts*: $ How much you will
save annually: $ How much you have in
*401(k)s and IRAs*: $ How much you will

In one study last year, for example, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee
economist Keith Bender found that an extra $10,000 of wealth increases the
odds that a retiree will rank among the most satisfied by less than 1
percent.

So how can you boost the likelihood that you'll have a fulfilling
retirement? Insights from happiness researchers suggest the following
strategies can help.
Create a steady income

Retirees with a traditional pension who get a monthly check for life have
been found to be more content than those with the same level of wealth but
only a 401(k). People feel more secure when they don't worry about
outliving their money, says Stan Panis, a manager with Deloitte Financial
Advisory Services.

And retirees who have both a pension and a 401(k) are even happier, buoyed
by the security of a guaranteed income plus a pool of cash to pay for
unexpected expenses. Traditional pensions are going the way of the Nehru
jacket, but you can create the equivalent of one on your own.

How? By investing a portion of your 401(k) or other savings in an income
annuity, which will pay you a guaranteed income as long as you live. You
can get price quotes from several annuity issuers, as well as their
financial strength ratings, at a site like
Immediateannuity.comhttp://www.immediateannuities.com/.
[See more in a recent Ask the Expert column, Income for
lifehttp://money.cnn.com/2005/12/02/pf/expert/ask_expert/index.htm
.]
Keep active -- to a point

Staying engaged in a variety of activities also increases your shot at an
enjoyable retirement. Urban Institute economist Barbara Butrica found that
retirees who both worked and volunteered were 13 percent more likely to
consider themselves very satisfied than those who didn't.

But you can't hustle and bustle your way to retirement nirvana. The boost in
satisfaction trailed off for retirees who worked or volunteered more than
200 hours a year, and the positive effect seemed to disappear at 500 hours.

Motivation also mattered. People who worked because they needed the income,
rather than for enjoyment, actually felt less satisfied about their
retirement. The moral: Be careful that the activities you pursue don't
become too much like, well, work.
Try to control your exit

Bender's work shows that people who left their jobs voluntarily were 30
percent more likely to be happiest in retirement than those who were pushed
out.

One reason: People who retire on their own schedules have had a better
opportunity to get their postwork finances in order. They're also better
prepared psychologically. If you're humming along and suddenly things don't
work out as planned, says Bender, it can be quite a shock.

You can't control whether you'll have to stop working because of ill health
or a downsizing, which account for 75 percent of involuntary retirements.
But while it's tough to think about, it pays to recognize the possibility
and do some advance planning -- say, looking into your options for taking
Social Security and getting health insurance to tide you over until you
qualify for Medicare. Then, if you do get the boot, you won't be caught
totally off guard.

A final, happy note: Studies show older retirees tend to feel better about
their lives than younger ones. So if you've tried to improve your situation
and it still isn't going well, hang in there. Chances are that life, like
fine wine, will improve with age.

g_b Story-Once upon a time.......

2006-02-11 Thread Ganesh Kumble
ONECE UPON A TIME...

There was a rich King who had 4 wives.

He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her
to the finest of delicacies. He gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much and was always showing her off to
neighboring kingdoms. However, he feared that one day
she would leave him for another.

He also loved his 2nd wife. She was his confidante and was always kind,
considerate and patient with him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could
confide in her to help him get through the difficult times.

The King's 1st wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions
in maintaining his wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first wife
and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.

One day, the King fell ill and he knew his time was short.

He thought of his luxurious life and pondered, I now have 4 wives with me,
but when I die, I'll be all alone.
Thus, he asked the 4th wife, I have loved you the most, endowed you with the
finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you
follow me and keep me company?

No way! replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word.

Her answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart.

The sad King then asked the 3rd wife, I have loved you all my life. Now that
I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?

No! replied the 3rd wife. Life is too good!
When you die, I'm going to remarry!

His heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, I have always turned to you for help and you've
always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me
and keep me company?

I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time! replied the 2nd wife. At the
very most, I can only send you to your grave.

Her answer came like a bolt of thunder and the King was devastated.

Then a voice called out:
I'll leave with you and follow you no matter where you go. The King looked up
and there was his first wife. She was so skinny,
she suffered from malnutrition.
Greatly grieved, the King said, I should have taken much better care of you
when I had the chance!

In Truth, we all have 4 wives in our lives ...
Our 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in
making it look good, it'll leave us when we die.

Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth.
When we die, it will all go to others.

Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there
for us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.

And our 1st wife is our Soul,

often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the ego.
However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us wherever we go.

So cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now!
It is your greatest gift to offer the world.
