g_b Queeer Azadi Divas, or is it, yet?

2008-08-14 Thread Aditya Bondyopadhyay
Queer Azadi Divas, or is it, yet?

Today is 15 August, a day which is of enormous significance to all Indians,
for in 1947, exactly 61 years ago; we were freed from the slavery of the
British. Well that was political freedom of the most basic kind that, the
first step so to speak, for that step let us go on and try to free our own
selves of many of the other slaveries that we were mired with but had no
time to really address because we were busy getting rid of the British. We
have moved faster on some of those slaveries and relatively slower on some
others. Often, we have given the freedom on paper much before they were
translated into tangible freedoms that we could taste and feel and touch and
live with.

On paper, women, dalits, religious minorities, and many others were
given freedoms from years of oppression pretty soon after independence, but
they took years and years of further struggle to translate that freedom into
something tangible that they could actually enjoy. And they have still not
quiet reached there. But the proverbial golden lining is that we all feel
that they are getting there. There is reason for optimism there.

On other freedoms, like that from poverty and illiteracy, we have progressed
only at a snail's pace. We have pulled out only about 1% of out population
every year from below that rather flexible poverty line since 1991, and
therefore at this rate we still have about 25 years to go before we can say
we have no dire poverty left. I will be 63 years old then and most likely
not even alive to see that day.

It took us almost six decades of dithering and hiding behind the well
intentioned scapegoat of constitutional 'Directive Principles' to make right
to a basic primary education a fundamental right. Well we got there and did
it, congratulations! And what does this mean? it means that today the street
kid that you see begging at a railways platform actually has a right to go
to the supreme court and claim against the Indian Government that he be
given a free and proper education. The state will then most likely to be
forced to give him that, only its very unlikely that the kid will go to the
supreme court, for very likely he does not even know that there is a thing
called supreme court, or that he has the right to go there to claim an
education. And there are 55 million like him across the length and breadth
of this great nation.

So why am I saying all this? Well, because in that incremental slippery
slope of freedoms, the queer people of this country are still in bondage. We
still have a law that criminalises me and the likes of me for simply being
me. I did not choose it, I was born with it, but none the less I am guilty
for being it. But like that woman or that dalit or that street kid, may be I
and the likes of me are getting there. We can almost smell it in the air
that like that first basic step of 15th August 1947, we will take that first
basic step to our emancipation with the ridding of the law that criminalises
me, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. All from the health minister to
the media to the sundry aunty who has seen 'queer as folk' on pirated DVD
and feels his femme nephew may be 'like that' have joined in my cry for
freedom. I even feel kind of good at the way things are and the way things
are going. But hold that thought there..!!

With uncanny and bollywoodian sense of timing, Mumbai has chosen the day of
Pakistani Independence as the day to hold its Queer Azadi March. This is
great news for all queer people, for our visibility is on the upswing, and
the more we junk the closet, the closer we will get to realising that first
taste of real freedom. Bollywood has an uncanny ability to resurrect
accidental heroes with lots of song and dance and make a myth out of their
lives. Take Mangal Pandey, real history tells us that he was under the
influence of that potent Indian hemp sorbet 'Bhaang', when he pulled that
trigger against his British minders. But bhaang or not, he did pull that
trigger, he did get hung for it and he did in turn trigger that first battle
of freedom that ended with the sacking and loot of Delhi, the murder of the
last sovereign dynasty, and the exile of the last sovereign himself. For the
Brits it was at best a tactical victory, for the ember of that struggle
never died down and ultimately led to 15th August and independence 90 years
later.

One day we will likely have a gay Bollywood. And they will likely be
resurrecting other accidental heroes. Gay heroes..!! I have a candidate for
them when that happens. His name is Rafiqueul Haque Dowza, alias Ranjan. I
call him accidental for personal reasons. I do not quiet like him as a
person. But my liking, like Mangal Pandey's bhaang is immaterial. He did
gather 6 of his friends 9 years ago and marched through the streets of
Kolkata, marking the first pride march in India, and lighting an ember that
has only progressively burnt brighter. This year the fire spread to 3 cities
first

Hi,

Hope this mail of mine does not trigger another chain of mails.

I have a friend, a straight guy, who is photographer.

He is inexperienced photographer, as much as assignments are

concerned. But he is full of enthusiasm and ideas and imaginations.

I am open to him and he also knows that I am member of some gay

groups, hence he wanted some help from me.

He has got some assignments from some aspiring models and the

assignments are mostly clicking them in sensual way, some topless or

some nudes even... (with light arrangements to hide their faces or

privates..)

Being a new comer, he is little worried about indian laws about

photography and publishing them.

So he wanted to know, if clicking nudes of a male and publishing them

(or keeping them with him) is an issue as per the law.

The reason to ask the query here is, the assignments are mostly for

male pictures, and mostly sensual in nature, nude or semi nude...

If anyone can provide some information, it would be great help.

A.

Re: g_b spelt vs spelled

2008-08-14 Thread Salil

British English may be a funny language, but sometimes one would rather prefer
"spelt" over "spelled". Just try revising "spelt doom" to "spelled doom" - the
former sounds right - but then maybe its all about what you learnt when you
were a kid.

I suppose that was to me? No, British English which we studied way
back in 1970 accepts "spelt". I don't know if the American English nowadays
does not accept "spelt". No, I wrote and meant "spelt".

Thanks for reading and for responding!

g_b The Queer Azadi March is ON!

2008-08-14 Thread Vikram
The Queer Azadi March is ON!

Date: Saturday, August 16th

Route: From August Kranti Maidan (in between Kemps Corner and Grant
Road Station) to Girgaum Chowpatty.

Time: 2 pm to 4.30 pm.

I haven't posted much on the Queer Azadi March before this, but this
is because until as late as last night there were questions about
whether there would be a march at all. Getting all the police
permissions has been a real circus, a nine day long battle with the
bureaucracy and one really homophobic senior cop who almost succeeded
in stopping us.

But just as bad things can have good consequences, this one did too,
because when things really looked desperate, we started looking for
help and found it with a number of influential people - politicians,
journalists, even past senior police officers, who quietly pulled
strings behind the scenes and finally ensured that we got our
permission today. So its ON!

We have had to make some changes, but the basic route has remained
the one we wanted. We will start from August Kranti Maidan, where
Mahatma Gandhi issued the call for the British to Quit India, and
will march from there to Nana Chowk, turn left to Kennedy Bridge,
down to Opera House, turn right over the railway tracks to Sukh Sagar
and down to Chowpatty Beach where we will disperse.

The change has been the timings. The police want to make sure that
the march is over by 4.30 after which peak hour traffic starts, and
in the civic interest we have agreed. So now the march will start
after lunch this Saturday, August 16th. Everyone must assemble at
August Kranti Maidan from 2 pm and the march is scheduled to start at
2.30. There will be a few speeches and then we will set out, walking
in twos and as far as possible on the footpath (again, this is at the
request of the traffic police), to arrive at Chowpatty just before
our 4.30 pm deadline.

This is going to be an orderly march, and we will do our best to walk
peacefully and disrupting the area as little as possible. Media will
be present at the march, and for those who this is an issue, we will
be providing masks. But I'd urge you not to let this be an overriding
concern for one simple reason - there are going to be many more than
just queer people at the march.

The one thing that has overwhelmed us is the amount of interest shown
by straight people in marching with us. Some of them are celebs like
Celina Jaitley, who gave a moving story in MidDay and TV yesterday of
how she was going to march in memory of gay friend who committed
suicide sometime back. But as important will be the very many other
people - friends, families, human rights activists, just general
supporters - who will also be marching.

Like a call I just got from a cousin of my mother who knows I am gay,
but has never really discussed it. She told me that her daughter who
has just returned from studying in the US, where she clearly had many
gay friends, is insisting on taking part in the march in solidarity
with them, and she wanted her mother to come too. So her mother
called me and asked me a few questions about the march and then
decided she would come too with her daughter.

There are many others who are coming like that and they will make
this march really special. So please consider coming, and please
consider bringing your family and friends too. See you on the 16th!

Vikram

2008-08-14 Thread great guy

Hi tintin,
Photography is an art like other s, and it cannot be bound in limits. I believe
every one in India has the right of expression and nude photos are no
exception. The only factor your friend has to take care of - it should not
hurt feelings of others be it personal, religious or other.
I would not mind modelling in nude as long as it shows nature in good light and
the photographer knows how to explore those without hidden motives.

Hi,Hope this mail of mine does not trigger another chain of mails.I have a
friend, a straight guy, who is photographer. He is inexperienced photographer,
as much as assignments areconcerned. But he is full of enthusiasm and ideas and
imaginations.I am open to him and he also knows that I am member of some
gaygroups, hence he wanted some help from me.He has got some assignments from
some aspiring models and theassignments are mostly clicking them in sensual
way, some topless orsome nudes even... (with light arrangements to hide their
faces orprivates..)Being a new comer, he is little worried about indian laws
aboutphotography and publishing them.So he wanted to know, if clicking nudes of
a male and publishing them(or keeping them with him) is an issue as per the
law.The reason to ask the query here is, the assignments are mostly formale
pictures, and mostly sensual in nature, nude or semi nude...If anyone can
provide some information, it would be great help.A.

Want a friend's love, without sex? Try me!

g_b Queer Azaadi Mumbai 2008 Timings Revised!!!!

2008-08-14 Thread GayBombay Events
PLEASE NOTE:
In compliance of the various permissions granted the Queer Azadi Mumbai 2008
March shall leave August Kranti Maidan at 14:00 Hours.

GayBombay Participates in Queer Azaadi Mumbai 2008.

Gaybombay will be marching at the Queer Azadi Mumbai 2008 March.

Date: 16 August, 2008
Time: 1400 hrs to 1630 hrs
Route: August Kranti Maidan (nearest station: Grant Road) to Girgaum Chowpatty

About the Queer Azaadi March:

What is 'queer'? Queer was originally used as a put-down, but the word was
reclaimed as a positive marker of identity by those of us whom society
considered odd, strange or abnormal. We use the word to refer to all people
marginalised by a society that is narrowly defined by hetero-normativity and by
the male-female gender binary. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, hijra, transgender,
kothi, panthi, intersex. all who identify with words like these have gathered
here today under the umbrella of the "queer" community.

What's the slogan "queer azadi" about? This country achieved Independence on
15th August, 1947, but its countless queer citizens are still not free. We have
no rights, and no place in a society that refuses to accept us for who we are.
And that is why we've chosen 16th August as Queer Azadi Diwas, so that we may
be seen and heard, and in order to bring to the notice of both our society and
our government some issues that concern us:

. Under Sec. 377 of the Indian Penal Code our desires and relationships are
considered to be criminal acts. We want this regressive law read down.

. Every individual is under tremendous pressure to marry a person of the
opposite sex, as marriage is seen as a must in our society. We are launching a
campaign against all such forced marriages.

. The Constitution must include provisions to deal with all discrimination on
the grounds of sexuality or gender.

. We call for an end to homophobia and transphobia - an end to violence and
hate within families, in educational institutions, at places of work and in
public spaces.

Today's event is not just for the queer communities. Many others are here to
encourage and support us - family members, friends, colleagues; NGOs, women's
groups, human rights organizations, and trade unionists; educational
institutions and their students.

We invite you to join us on our march as well and to raise your voice along
with ours.
