Soon, two magazines to voice concerns of LGBT community

Chennai: They were once a silent part of society, but the lesbian, gay,
bisexual and trangender (LGBT) community has been striving to find a voice.
Despite battling social prejudices, they have been conducting events to
create awareness and are now coming out with magazines.

Kalki Subramaniam of Sahodari Foundation
  will launch
'Thirunangai', a magazine for transgendered people, on December 10, while
Chennai Dost, a support group for gay and bisexual men, is planning a Pongal
release for its lifestyle magazine, 'M4G'.

"The aim of 'Thirunangai' is to highlight the problems of the transgender
community," says Kalki. "One of the articles will deal with why so many
transgender people resort to sex work and begging." While there are NGOs
working with the community, Kalki believes that a magazine will bring
change.

The first issue of the 32-page, bi-monthly magazine will be in Tamil. "We
plan to make it bilingual later. It is meant for not just the community but
also policymakers and NGOs," says Kalki, who is depending on donations as
well as money from Sahodari Foundation for funding. The magazine will be
distributed free to transgenders, and available to others for an annual
subscription of Rs 300. It will also have an agony aunt column and a film
section on Indian and international movies on gender.

Chennai Dost, on the other hand, wants its magazine 'M4G' (Magazine for
Gays) to be fun. "Across India, there are LGBT magazines that are
rights-oriented but we wanted a lifestyle one," says Kalaban, one of the
members.

So the first edition of the quarterly magazine will feature the top 15 hot
men in the country. 'M4G' will also have fashion tips, recipes, interviews
of gay couples living together, and dating tips. But that doesn't mean it
will not deal with serious issues. "Our cover story will focus on how many
members of our community are blackmailed," says Kalaban.

The 60-page magazine will be in English. "Our organisation caters mainly to
middle and upper middle class so we decided on an English magazine as we
don't have funds to make it bilingual," says Vikram Prasanna, founder,
Chennai Dost. For the first edition, about 200 copies will be printed and
distributed to members of the organisation and gay groups. "It will be
priced at Rs 160," says Prasanna

While many welcome the initiative, some people feel the need to exercise
caution. "Though times have changed, especially after the Delhi high court
ruling de-criminalising gay sex, crackdowns on the community are still
happening," says L Ramakrishnan, one of the editors of orinam.net, an online
bilingual resource for LGBT people.

2011-11-09 Thread GayBombay Events
GayBombay Sunday Meet at Bandra on 13 Nov 2011

Day, Date & Time:
Sunday 13 November, 2011, between 6:00 to 6:30 pm

Venue:
Outside Baskin Robbins Outlet,
And Apple store,

Linking Road,
Bandra [west]

(We may then move to another venue close by for an informal chat)

Directions:

At Bandra Station, on the WEST side, take a rickshaw to Linking Road. Get down
at the National College junction. The Baskin Robbins outlet is opposite the
college.

Cover:
Free Entry

Note:

* PLEASE DO NOT COME DIRECTLY TO THE VENUE (which is generally someone's home),
even if you are completely familiar with it and even if you happen to know the
owner of the home very well. You are advised to come directly at the first
venue, mentioned on the website or announced on the mailing list.

* Ensure that you get to Baskin Robbins before 6:30 pm.

* Drag is a strict no-no. For the simple reason that though Gaybombay doesn't
mind drag, the places that host us do. There are also may be many attendees who
will prefer being discreet or may be still be coming to terms with themselves
hence a request that all be sensitive to this and act and dress accordingly.

* After visiting the post meet venue, no one is allowed to go back to that
place unless invited specifically by the owner of the house.

* We like to maintain Gaybombay as a comfort zone. This is a platform, which
allows hesitant and often apprehensive gays to come and meet other gay people.
As such, this platform has a strictly non-sexual framework. This group is not
about porn, or orgies, or sex-talk, or escorts, or hook-ups.

* Do get your friends along to help them gain access to a group especially if
they are not netizens. You do not have to be "out" to the world to attend. This
is a discreet event being held as a clean, safe & social get-together of a
non-sexual nature. Hardly any of those attending are "out" as such.

* You need to be at least 18 years of age to attend.

Re: g_b Need your help

2011-11-09 Thread Mike Morea
I have a friend from Bangalore. As sweet as the people of Bangalore are, they
are still rooted strongly in tradition. He is not yet sure of his sexuality.
Bi/Homo/Hetero ?? They had been forcing him to get married too. He got a
assignment out of the country and opted for a long stay away from home. During
this time he made it clear that he is not interested in getting married at all,
never. He has made it clear his interests are different and he likes to lead
life on his terms only. Initially parents did put up resistance, but now they
are resigned to the fact that their son may never marry.

Parents main concern is the welfare of their children. In a society shackled
with homophobia, they are naturally scared. But ultimately your life is yours
and yours only. You have to decide. If you like your parents or have the need
for shelter with them or whatever the reason is, One choice is to tell them you
will never get married. This will at least keep their worries about alienation
from the society etc. away and they may leave you alone. But this means you
will have to remain closeted.

If you can choose to move out one way or the other, that would be best.

However, if you have younger sisters that need to be married, then "caution" is
the word of choice. For time being you can remain closeted and can come out
when time is right.

Many answers all depends on the situation ... nothing is right or wrong
whatever solution works for you is the right one.  Choose the right one
that fits the situation and you.

For heaven's sake, do not get married and bring unhappiness in to your and the
person that choose to believe you .. for the sake of your parents.  Tell them
if it was their daughter that would be put into similar situation, how would
they feel?

Hope this helps Good luck.

Morea.

Subject: g_b Need your help

Dear All,

Am Naveen, Age 28 from Bangalore. I need your help in convincing my parents
about my marriage.

Its since 2 years my parents started forcing me to get married. They had no
clue about my Gay sexuality until I came out to them. As expected they were
shocked when I told them about this, one and half years ago. Their reaction was
"This can't happen, Its unnatural, you are with wrong friends..." hundreds of
inquiry about how I became Gay.  Finally they took me to a psychiatrist and
even I thought it would be helpful for me to make them understand if a doctor
speaks about it. To my fate the doctor terns out to be dumb about knowledge of
sexuality and started advising me that you became Gay bcoz you didn't had sex
with any girl. I started arguing with him but couldn't as my parents started
shouting at me saying you don't advise doctor just listen what he says. Now it
has crossed limits and they think I have been polluted by wrong thoughts and
they are not even in a stage to believe internet documents. They are not ready
to listen any thing they just want
 me to get married.

Guys please help me...How will i be able to make them understand about this.

Regards
Naveen

Re: g_b gays just want good looking guys (mostly)

Sorry that I did not read the mail, but the title itself was enough to
respond...
Have you seen a str8 girl, stating that she want to settle down with an
ugly looking guy, or if the guy is just so so looking, she would be OK with?
Have you seen a str8 guy, if given a choice, going for an average looking
girl?

So man, if looks are talked about, its common tendency to go for the
beauty...
(that is a separate issue that what is beauty for an individual)

And yes, very few people are there, who settle down based on
intellectuality, understanding, compatibility etc.

On the first go, almost everyone go for looks, richness, fashion quotient,
etc etc.
Now a days, if you throw attitude, you are hot...

Sad yet true...

Hey guys,
Many of you agreed with me when I had said that Laxmi has done us proud, by
representing herself with poise and dignity.
She has now been nominated, and it would be awesome if we could vote to save
her!

Irrespective of whether you watch the show or not, I think we'd do well to
create an acceptable celebrity with mass appeal, and that would happen if she
stays on longer.

I have nothing to do with her personally, just have grown fond of her and her
ways on the show, and would love for her to have an opportunity to make it
longer. She has been the strongest LGBT contestant so far, and has an
opportunity to garner even more positive public visibility.

To save Laxmi, please send LAX to 56882

Thank you!
