Well, I admire your energy. Why not being lazy and telling that your tutorial

 things might not apply.

All users do not administrate their computers. If sys admin suggests
something like Debian Squeeze stable
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/gdal-bin or Debian Wheezy stable
http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/gdal-bin it would be nice to check fast if
for example gdallocationinfo or gdal_edit.py is supported or if admins
should install something cutting edge instead
http://packages.debian.org/experimental/gdal-bin. Which they probably will
not do but that is another story.

By the way, I checked my laptop that I have been used since 2006 and found
44 separate GDAL dll files of versions between 1.2 and 1.10.

[gdal-dev] In which version utilities have appeared?

2013-11-08 Thread Jukka Rahkonen
Hi,

Is there a list about the minimum GDAL version for each of the GDAL tools in
http://www.gdal.org/gdal_utilities.html?

Not directly. A solution would be to download the *doc packages on
http://download.osgeo.org/gdal/ and look at the differences

Oh dear. And if I bother to do that what might be a good place to share the
results? Wiki perhaps? I am writing short tutorials sometimes and it is
essential to mension the versions because there are old GDAL versions in the
wild and included in other programs.

There are not that many utilities, however, many of the utilities have
all kinds of flags and features which started at various versions.
Looking for starting with gdal on http://gdal.org/ogr2ogr.html gives
a hint at that complexity. starting with or GDAL on
http://gdal.org/gdal_translate.html And if there are changes in
formats (or proj4) that interact with these flags... Coherent
presentation would require a huge table or chart and maybe still be
confusing.
