Wave report - a shepherds view

2012-06-11 Thread Ross Gardler
The Wave project, in the main, seems to be doing OK. Mailing list
traffic is healthy, commits are happening and there seems to be good
diversity.

What is missing is new committers (none voted in since entering the
incubator) and a release (none made yet). However the report does not
address these two items.

I've added the previous sentence to the report in my capacity as this
months shepherd and request that the project covers these in the next
report. Mentors can help if necessary. If you need broader input mail
general@incubator.apache.org (cc'd to this mail).

We have discussed these two topics (committers and releases) around the
time of this report, but did not update the report to note this.

I hope the conversation will continue, and that wave will have more to
report for its next report.

[DISCUSS] Kato to the attic?

2012-06-11 Thread Benson Margulies
Wearing the very small hat of shepherd, I write to start a discussion
of moving Kato to the attic.

The last sign of activity was at the last reporting period, and the
only activity then was for one contributor to note that he had really
no time to spend on the project and the future needed to be discussed.
No discussion followed.

The private list last saw traffic in 2009.

The three listed mentors don't have time to deal with this. I'm told
that Joe volunteered to help out here.

I'm very tentatively proposing that the IPMC vote to shelve the
project and, if the vote succeeds, that I and any other willing
parties take care of the Attic process.

I would expect that this thread would lead our esteemed chair to
report to the board that the IPMC is actively discussing the
appropriate disposition.

[VOTE] graduation of VCL as a TLP

IPMC members,

Given the positive feedback from Jukka Zitting and no negative feedback, I'd
like to request a vote for the graduation of VCL as a TLP to be proposed to
the ASF Board at the June board meeting. I've included the discussion email I
sent last week as a reference. I'd like to close the vote on Friday morning,
June 15th. This will allow the vote to be open for over 72 hours and allow
enough time to get the resolution submitted to the board and on the agenda for
the June meeting.

Please reply with your vote.

+1 yes, VCL should graduate
 0 don't know
- -1 no, VCL should not graduate - please include why not

Thanks,
Josh Thompson

IPMC members,

The VCL project would like to graduate. We think we have fulfilled all of the
requirements for graduation. We had a successful community graduation vote,
including positive votes from 2 mentors. The result of that vote is in this
email (mentors denoted by * in the list):

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-vcl-
user/201205.mbox/CAD7o_Xzkwd3ckZNWaDNPAhuJs9USKftgZcPhS=bnqpxsqhm...@mail.gmail.com

We have prepared a board resolution that can be viewed on our wiki:

https://cwiki.apache.org/VCL/graduation-board-resolution.html

There is one member listed in the initial member list (Dmitri Chebotarov)
whose ICLA has been sent in but not yet processed. If something were to keep
his ICLA from being processed, we understand that his name would need to be
removed from the list before a vote is called for us to graduate.

There was also a vote in the community to appoint Andy Kurth as our initial
chair. The result for that vote is in this email:

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-vcl-
dev/201205.mbox/%3CDD527FB1-35F4-474A-9BEB-77461F617B78%40amherst.edu%3E

Please provide any feedback on our charter. Also, let us know if there are
any other issues that may need to be completed before we would be allowed to
graduate.

Thanks,
Josh

 The Oozie developers and users will (presumably) know what Oozie is,
 but others are unlikely to know.

 Yes, they can click on the link, but why should the have to do so?

 Providing the details can help promote the podling.

 Note: the announcement should also be sent to the general incubator
 list (copied with this reply)

 The details of the release and download location can be found at

 The highlights of this release are:

 * Hive action
 * Sqoop action
 * Shell action
 * Tool to create/upgrade database schema
 * Kerberos SPNEGO authentication
 * Proxy User capabilities for Oozie users
 * Job ACLs support
 * Improved Job information over HTTP REST API
 * Improved Workflow validation
 * Sharelib directories per action
 * New EL functions for Workflow and Coordinator applications

 In addition it includes several improvements for performance and
 stability and several bug fixes.
