2015-05-11 Thread Colin McCabe
Downloaded. Verified hashes.
Ran unit tests
Installed and built Hadoop trunk against it
Verified that HDFS integration and htraced worked

+1.

Re: [DRAFT] May 2015 Board Report

2015-05-11 Thread Dave Lester
Hi Tim,

I found Konstantin's comment to be helpful. Could it have provided
additional details? Sure. But I don't think there's a need to make this
personal. Shepherd comments tend to be quite brief.

We should celebrate volunteer efforts instead of calling others
"unhelpful and lazy."

Human's drive nearly all of that traffic. What is your point?
Honestly, this shepherd comment seems unhelpful and lazy. I'd suggest
it's better to admit that you've run out of time than offer mediocre
shepherd comments.

Shepherd substitute for June report

2015-05-11 Thread Konstantin Boudnik
Guys,

I am looking for someone to pickup my share of shepherd'ing for the next
month. I am going to be on vacation for the first time in almost five years
and yes - I am not going to even take my laptop with me.

I'd appreciate if someone can take it over my share of the project for this
cycle. I would gladly reciprocate if you'd need my help at some point ;)

Thanks in advance!

2015-05-11 Thread Konstantin Boudnik
John,

I am sorry for being a bit late with shepherd'ing Kylin and Blur. I have just
left my comments on the wiki. Reiterating here just in case:

- Kylin: No issues with the project: mail lists are very active.
- Blur: Human activity on Dev list is almost zero: high 90% of the emails are
from CI system or JIRA notificaitons.

Thanks

AsterixDB

Apache AsterixDB is a scalable big data management system (BDMS) that
provides storage, management, and query capabilities for large collections
of semi- structured data.

AsterixDB has been incubating since 2015-02-28.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Get the site up.
  2. Do an Apache release.
  3. Grow community

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

  No, still getting started.

How has the community developed since the last report?

The SGA has been signed and the code has been imported.
More discussions happen on the Apache lists now.

How has the project developed since the last report?

SGA and code drop done, need to get the site (and maybe the Wiki) up as
  well.

Date of last release:

  No Releases yet.

When were the last committers or PMC members elected?

  No elected PMC and/or committers

Shepherd/Mentor notes:

Blur

Blur is a search platform capable of searching massive amounts of data
in a cloud computing environment.

Blur has been incubating since 2012-07-24.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. We anticipate pursuing graduation after our upcoming release.
  2.
  3.

Re: [DISCUSS] Mysos Incubation proposal

2015-05-11 Thread Dave Lester
Thanks all for your feedback thus far.

I'm open to name changes, particularly since this is early in the
project's life and it would create few issues. The initial list of
committers will be touching base tomorrow morning and we'll be sure to
bring this up and report back on any potential name changes.

In the meantime, are there other questions / comments / concerns
regarding the proposal?

Thanks,
Dave

Generally speaking, we wouldn't permit this. There have been
exceptions in the past, but generally if JavaX becomes a project at
the Apache Software Foundation, it would need to have sole rights to
the trademark, or it would need to choose another name. E.g. we
generally don't allow folks to bring a project here, and
simultaneously continue to externally release a software product
bearing the same name. There are generally two trains of thought -
either 1) change your external product name, or 2) change the project
name.

Of course you may continue talking about, writing about and otherwise
promoting the Apache project that would be named JavaX, in fact we'd
encourage that.

+1 for this release. In my opinion, it would be okay to add build
instructions in the announcement (and presumably on the download page on
the website). We should definitely update the BUILDING.txt for the next
release, though.

+1 (binding)

So far (checksums, signatures, L&N, build, etc) looks just. Just a minor
comment that I'd improve: I miss the commit id (I think actually is
e21e0156d72f3f1d36351146b7994ab085969915), only the tag is mentioned in the
vote mail (tags can be (re)moved in git), but non-blocking anyway.

Just to make sure people realize the amount of possible confusion
between the Mesos and Mysos names: in french, the letter "y" is
pronounced very much like "e" in english. I'm not saying any of our
french colleagues have an accent, but if they did you might get the
exact same sound.

Much too confusing IMO...fun names might sound appealing initially and
bite you in the back later.

Or you need to get people used to calling those projects Mike Echo and
Mike Yankee ;-)

2015-05-11 Thread Chris Aniszczyk
I'd agree that many of us within the Mesos community see this as a pattern
and are OK with the name as long as there are no trademark issues. Since
the projects operate within similar communities, I think having related
names are a plus, I would be more worried if they weren't related projects
at all.

Good point, and I'm sure we can find other similar failure cases,
having such confusing names for Apache projects is not a good idea

That's not possible at Apache, our projects are owned by communities.

Our project maturity model at
http://community.apache.org/apache-way/apache-project-maturity-model.html
might help clarify such things (this topic is CO60 there).

In general, if a single-person project comes to our incubator, we ask
people to first build a community of developers (even a small one), to
demonstrate some interest from others before joining the ASF.

2015-05-11 Thread Stefan Reich
Hi all!

Thanks for your answers :-)

> Are you working alone on the project? Do you have any other contributors
to
the code base? Perhaps it might be a good seed for the new community?

I am trying hard to find other contributors. There is a certain state of
blockade it seems...

Contributors, however, would include just people who program with JavaX.
That is a very low hurdle (just requires knowledge of Java). I can do all
the rest, including advancing the language.

I am very fine with being the official person in charge within the
incubated project, if that is possible.

What I need to break through with the project, I think, is some more
attention and maybe a bit of "endorsement". If JavaX is part of the Apache
incubator, that could just be that kind of endorsement.

Please tell me how to proceed! This is all like a bootstrapping process;
taking the initial hurdle of building a user base. I have worked on this in
various ways since at least 2011. It's quite a bit of work moving up from
being a "nobody", but I think it can be done... :-)

(PS: I read the slides about the ASF and I agree with almost everything.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the voting process, like who exactly
gets to vote and veto and so on. I've seen too many saboteurs in my days
:-))

All the best,
Stefan
