My chief concern so far has been assuring that our nascent Infra-supported
offerings do not conflict with policy. Now that this has been achieved (in
planning, if not yet in implementation), it's easier to speak to your issue.

The main Docker Hub at hub.docker.com is a public-facing downstream
distribution channel -- similar to Maven Central, PyPI, Debian package
management, etc.

It is appropriate to distribute official releases through downstream channels,
but inappropriate to distribute unreleased materials through them. (That's
why having `latest` on hub.docker.com point to git `master` is problematic.)
See Apache's formal Release Policy and Release Distribution Policy documents:

http://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy#policy
http://www.apache.org/dev/release-distribution#policy

There are an unbounded number of such downstream channels, and there is no way
we are going to formulate specific policies for all of them. Instead, we
primarily rely on people respecting our trademarks: that "Apache Foo", when
obtained from one of these channels, is what the consumer expects.

http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks

One implication is that if you're using the project name for that Docker
Hub account, we'd expect the entire PMC to have access.

Incubating podlings operate under additional constraints, in that the "Apache"
brand needs to be tempered with "incubating" and appropriate disclaimers.

http://incubator.apache.org/guides/branding.html

But within those guidelines, the answer is: yes, go ahead. If Infra's
offering is not to your taste, that is.

John,

I know of this commit and I cannot see any distinction between the
src/utils folder and many other excluded folders. Here is the phrase from
the LICENSE file:

The rest of the source code, unless explicitly marked with an Apache License
header, should be assumed to be coming from previous life of MADlib as a
BSD licensed project and is available under the following license:

that the latest commits are from 4-5 years ago. Could you point us to the

2016-09-07 Thread John D. Ament
Frank,

Then those files should have Apache headers (they're not listed in the
explicitly licensed area & are part of a commit that added apache
headers). Can you explain why you think they're not subject, or what
license they're falling under?

Re: [VOTE] MADlib v1.9.1-rc2

2016-09-07 Thread Frank McQuillan
John,

src/utils files were in the original commit by Roman when we brought the
files into ASF:
https://github.com/apache/incubator-madlib/commit/a6acafdd54bd5e5d53ac3b7fb4b6621c042af460#diff-600376dffeb79835ede4a0b285078036
and they have not been changed since that time.

tag: a6acafdd54bd5e5d53ac3b7fb4b6621c042af460

So I do not believe any changes to NOTICE/LICENSE are required for src/utils

Frank

Ok, that clarifies part of it. I don't see a call out for src/utils. Why
are those in the exclusion list and will you be updating NOTICE/LICENSE?

Re: [VOTE] MADlib v1.9.1-rc2

2016-09-07 Thread Frank McQuillan
Hi John,

Thanks for reviewing the release.

Regarding the exclusion list, during the first Apache incubator release for
MADlib 1.9 alpha, there was a legal-discuss thread on how to proceed with
headers that came from pre-Apache days when MADlib was under a 2-clause BSD
license.

The agreement was to add them to the exclusion list as per:
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/www-legal-discuss/
201603.mbox/%3C9D1AF43C-370B-4E58-B0EF-2E29D242F50B%40jaguNET.com%3E
which we have done for the prior 2 releases. So for this 3rd release we
did the same.

Please let me know if you have any questions on this.

Frank

Re: [VOTE] MADlib v1.9.1-rc2

2016-09-07 Thread Rahul Iyer
 Hi John,

We've uploaded the KEYS file to apache dist
 and didn't
use any public server for the previous 2 releases.

I've uploaded my key (which was used for the signature) to keyservers.net
and should be available now after you update your local cache. Is this the
Apache recommended server to use?

Re: finding a Champion

2016-09-07 Thread John D. Ament
HI Roberto & Welcome!

It might be a good thing to post some information about your project, what
it does, if theres any existing source or community point links to it.
Seeing something vibrant and functioning will definitely draw out a
champion.

finding a Champion

2016-09-07 Thread Roberto Attias
Hello, this is my first email on this mailing list. I'm looking for a champion
to incubate a project. I wrote to a couple of people from projects which have
some relation, but neither replied, so I suspect I'm doing something wrong. At
this stage I'm looking for feedback on whether there might be interest, and if
so whether the project should be incubated right now, or at a later stage.

Any feedback on how to find somebody to discuss this with is welcome.
Thanks,
   Roberto

Re: [VOTE] MADlib v1.9.1-rc2

2016-09-07 Thread John D. Ament
In addition, your exclusion list is not valid for RAT (or maybe there was a
discussion that MADlib can exclude extra files?). I don't see a reason
that src/utils is excluded, for instance. There are files
(src/utils/Math.hpp for instance, but probably most of the files) that seem
to be madlib specific, so why are they not using proper license headers?

I'm getting a problem with your key. Can you look at it and tell me if you
think the issue's on my end?

Johns-MBP-2:Downloads johnament$ gpg --verify
apache-madlib-1.9.1-incubating-source.tar.gz.asc
gpg: assuming signed data in 'apache-madlib-1.9.1-incubating-source.tar.gz'
gpg: Signature made Fri Sep 2 12:05:14 2016 EDT using RSA key ID 6C725F40
gpg: requesting key 6C725F40 from hkps server hkps.pool.sks-keyservers.net
gpgkeys: key 52B795C96C725F40 not found on keyserver
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
gpg: Total number processed: 0
gpg: keyserver communications error: Not found
gpg: keyserver communications error: Bad public key
gpg: Can't check signature: No public key

Do I need to import your KEYS file or is your key uploaded to a public
server?

A necessary evil, perhaps. Even with Maven (at least older versions of
Maven), omitting the version while keeping only the groupId and artifactId
were legal coordinates.

Is the project-specific organization option not really an option at all
then? Frowned upon for a TLP, and not to be considered by a podling?

Thanks,
