Thanks Jerry and Justin for asking here, are the current answers OK for you guys? If no more concerns, I will start the vote recently. Thanks all for chimming in here! Re: [External Mail]Re: [DISCUSS] OzHera to the incubator
Thanks all for the updated proposal and thorough discussions so far. I'm pleased to see the progress made on the project since the initial discussions a year ago. AFAICS the team has addressed most of the previous concerns, thus I'm +1 for moving this forward. As a mentor, I am committed to guiding the project through its incubation, ensuring it continues to develop in a vibrant and diverse direction and follows the Apache Way. Re: [External Mail]Re: [DISCUSS] OzHera to the incubator
Thank you, Justin, for your questions. Regarding your three main concerns, here is the current situation: + Over the past six months, external contributors (xiaotietietie, kongniancp, etc.) have made several contributions, but still not enough to be included in the initial committers list. This is one of our main works after joining the incabator, to invite more PPMC members/committers from other companies/organizations. + We will revise the proposal accordingly. Our expectation is to follow the Apache Way after entering the incubator, using mailing lists for communication. Currently, we have not effectively utilized mailing lists or JIRA, primarily relying on GitHub issues for communication. + In the past six months, we have been actively attracting new contributors both internally and externally. Since the last proposal submission, we have added three new contributors (xiaotietietie, littlepangdi, system-designer). Although the number of pull requests from external contributors is not high, we will continue to work on this. The increase in external contributors is also a testament to our efforts. We will further improve our documentation to lower the participation threshold, organize more community activities, and attract more contributors. We also hope to attract more third-party developers to contribute during the incubation phase. On 2024/06/18 07:00:20 Justin Mclean wrote: > Hi, > > I have three main concerns: > 1. Re: [External Mail]Re: [DISCUSS] OzHera to the incubator
Hi, I have three main concerns: 1. All of the initial committers are from one company. 2. Very few contributors and just about all seem to be from the same company (one or two with a couple of commits may not be) 3. The project activity has been quite low over the last 5 months I do not see this reflected in the proposal, e.g. "Outstanding contributors are the cornerstone of this project, and they include not only developers from Xiaomi and other companies but also individual developers who are encouraged to contribute?” Where are these other companies and developers? or "In this project, exceptional contributors are recognized and rewarded,“ Who has been rewarded and how? Also " It has also attracted members from different companies such as JD.com, Kwai, Shopee, and others.” Why are people from these companies not on the initial committer list or show up as making contributions? The proposal also states "The contributors of OzHera are actively involved in Apache community projects, “, looking at the people involved, and I may have missed something, I’m not seeing a lot of activity in ASF projects. The proposal also also mentions "and every member can access the project roadmap, issues, and code through various channels such as mailing lists and JIRA” Where are these existing JIRA/lists? Under community, it states " broader promotion and participation from companies and individuals.” this is a bit of a concern. Projects should not join the ASF because they want companies involved and for promotion purposes. There are two main requirements to join the ASF incubator: one is to have a small community, and the other is to have a code base. We may still need more on the community side here. The proposal, as written, seems to paint an overly optimistic picture of the project. Before considering it further, I would like to see it updated to reflect the actual reality of the current project and spell out the risks to community growth beyond the involvement of a single company. Thanks Jerry for asking this. Let me highlight the most important updates below: 1.Splitting OzHera from the Mone Project: OzHera has been separated into an independent repository. 2.Establishing Decision-Making and Code Contribution Processes: + We have built the OzHera community and website following open-source and Apache way to facilitate better understanding and participation. + Using tools like GitHub Actions, we have standardized the processes for submitting PRs, issues, and reviews. + Additionally, we have defined the requirements and processes for releasing OzHera versions. 3.Dependency Licenses: + We have removed most dependencies which have license in Category X. There is still a LGPL dependency which is planned to be removed soon. + We have made the storage component of OzHera pluggable, now the default storage engine is Apache Doris instead of ES. + All dependencies have been upgraded to use RELEASE versions. 4.Internationalization Improvements: + The system now supports multi-language switching, with the default language set to English. + All documentation is available in both Chinese and English. + Comments, issue discussions, and other communications have been switched to English. + Introduced mentors from outside the mainland, and the overall number has also decreased to 4 people. 发件人: Jerry Tan 发送时间: 2024年6月15日 14:53:12 收件人: general@incubator.apache.org 主题: [External Mail]Re: [DISCUSS] OzHera to the incubator [外部邮件] 此邮件来源于小米公司外部,请谨慎处理。若对邮件安全性存疑,请将邮件转发给mi...@xiaomi.com进行反馈 Is there any update from last time about this proposal and project?
