I just needed to move forward and the 1.4 -based setup
worked, so i used it and dumped your -dev version.

Note that all i did was to synchronise our Anakia
with that of infrastructure/site svn.

Actually it might be jdom.

I had done post-processing on the Forrest xdoc output

Okay, the conversion is finished now and the new site is published.

There are a number of minor things remaining. Whoever is
interested can look back through this email thread.

The one major issue is alerted above by Jean.
It is a serious impediment.

Doing some email searches show that jcms is now Graffito,
so removed it.

So the critical things for item (4) are finished now.

The html sources can use a clean-up. There is lots
of unwanted stuff such as extra br elements and
comments that will not be relevant for xdocs.
I suggest that we do that post-conversion.

The site uses CSS so that should be easy to enhance later.
Perhaps the stylesheets/site.vsl will need to add some
extra class attributes.

AFAIK it does not. Specific pages at /dev/ for example
have a manual Table of Contents.

Hmmm, yes i do. There seem to be DOS end-of-line markers
only for text lines within and elements, etc.

This must be fixed because cannot do 'svn add' with such
a mess.

No idea where they come from. The xdocs2/stylesheets/site.vsl
is clear of them.

Yeah, i don't understand how the linking operates.

The table under the "Project info" section is especially visually
confusing because there are normally quite a few blank cells -- it could
use borders if that's trivial; otherwise, easy to catch in a post

And a table of contents at the top of the page would be nice if Anakia

However we need to trade that off with getting

I'm not spotting where to fix that in the source. xdocs2/linkmap.xml has

That is done now. See svn r372684.

This fixes the missing subsection titles and
uses CSS and not tables. Much better.

The trouble is that it uses hrefs with absolute
pathnames, so i cannot demonstrate it at people.a.o

No-one is stepping up, so i am investigating

This will require reversal of some changes
to the Forrest-generated new source xdocs.
Going back to section/title and section/section

This is why it is important to work this stuff

Okay i did some myself. With projects/*
two that had *.html source (harmony and synapse)
and two that had *.cwiki source (jackrabbit and apollo).

The data seems to be transformed properly.
I only did eyeball diffs. There are some issues.

The third-level section headings are present
but not rendered. This is issue 2) below.

With the docs that come from *.html source,
some of these have un-necessary elements
inside elements. The Anakia stylesheet
seems to choke on these. The important effect
is those table cells are not displayed.
For example, see the committers list at
http://people.apache.org/~crossley/incubator-anakia/projects/synapse.html

Would someone fix the stylesheet please.

I also checked a few documents at ip-clearance.
Seems okay, although the source had confused
section heading levels, which is carried over.

So i reckon that these are not holdups.

Re: Incubator site status wrt a move to Anakia?

2006-01-24 Thread David Crossley
It is time to make a plan for the move to Anakia.
We cannot afford for it to drag on any longer.

---
1) Review the generated source documents in site/xdocs2

Did the transformation perform okay?

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/public/trunk/site/README.txt

---
2) Refine the stylesheet

site/xdocs2/stylesheets/site.vsl

Seen only one problem so far. It needs to handle
more than two levels of subsection.

This can be fixed later.

---
3) Add any missing links to side-panel

For example, the new documents for the old "Learn" tab
are in site/xdocs2/learn but are not yet linked into
the site/xdocs2/stylesheets/project.xml

This can be fixed later.

---
4) Fix some things in site-author

At the moment these are not being processed by forrest
because they are not linked into the site.

jcms.html exists only in site-publish/projects
i.e. no matching source in site-author/projects

mv projects/sandesha.cwiki ip-clearance + link to table.
mv projects/wss4j.cwiki ip-clearance + link to table.

None of the harmony-* docs are linked into the
ip-clearance table.

These links must exist or the docs will not be converted.
Help please.

---
5) Generate the final new xdocs

---
6) Set up the svn space

incubator/public/trunk = top-level

Install Anakia at this top-level, i.e. move the
relevant contents of the new "site" directory up to
this top level, i.e. its build.xml and lib directory.

So the layout will be:

README.txt
STATUS
build.xml ... relace old not-used file with site/build.xml
lib ... the Anakia libraries
site-author ... replaced with the new source docs
site-publish ... the new Anakia-generated docs

---
7) Replace the existing content

In site-author

Retain the svn history. Do 'svn move' each file
to have a .xml filename extension and then replace
the content with that of the new sources from the
site/xdocs2 directory.

---
8) Generate the new html docs

---
9) Clean up the site-publish diectory

e.g. remove all the *.pdf
e.g. remove the corner images and CSS, etc.

---
10) Fix the website

This should not need to change. It will still be
an 'svn update' of the "site-publish" directory
as is done now.

It is important to keep it that way, because i supsect
that there is some extra content in there that is
not generated by the docs system.

---
11) Further tidy of site-author

Deal with some content that is not supposed to be there,
e.g. sub-directories: activemq, agila, servicemix,
geronimo, harmony, tapestry

See various past requests to general@ list.

---
12) Explain how to use the Anakia-based system

Replace the content at i.a.o/guides/website.html

---

If there are no concerns about that, then i will
go ahead early next week, i.e. 30/31 January.

I would like assistance with steps 1, 2, and 4.
Someone can attend to 3 and 11 later.

To ease the way, there is now a README.txt to
explain how to build the new docs with Anakia.
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/public/trunk/site/README.txt

Come on all, don't wait for Geir and me.
Did the "projects" status reports and "ip-clearance"
stuff get converted properly?

I would say manual tweaks are okay too. Doing a CTRL-F for

Fixed the section/subsection thing.

However the FAQ is still not right. I suspect that
the remaining problem is in the Anakia stylesheet.
The FAQ doc has three levels, i.e.

Fantastic, thanks for noticing that. It is so important.
We cannot afford to break links.

Yes that was just an ommission in the Forrest transformation.
Fixed locally.

Actually this is something that could use a big cleanup
in the existing sources before we do the final transformation.

If the author does not deliberately supply an anchor
then Forrest tries to generate them.

An example ...

Source: site-author/howtoparticipate.html
...
Project Website Howto
...
Updating the top-level website

If the source was xml then using an "id" attribute
achieves the same effect.

Generated doc:
...
...
...
...

The first one used the section title, which can become
very messy especially when long and containing non-alpha
characters.

The second is a clean deliberately-chosen anchor.

The anchors forrest generates for page sections are lost, so anything
that references them don't work.

For example, close to the end of the "Podling Constraints" section in
http://people.apache.org/~crossley/incubator-anakia/incubation/Incubation_Policy.html,
the sentence "See instructions for project website" links to
howtoparticipate.html#Project+Website+Howto , but the
Project+Website+Howto anchor doesn't exist on howtoparticipate.html.

If the anchors can't be auto-generated, I'll help add them in the
post-conversion cleanup.

The existing Incubator site was converted to
Anakia xdoc format. I used a local copy of Geir's
previous experiment [2] but with the forrest-generated
anakia xdocs.

We can tweak the Forrest plugin to match any changes
in Geir's xdoc format and stylesheets.

Anakia didn't report any errors with the final run.
However, please look out for any strangeness.

All the filenames and directories are the same as
the existing Incubator site. So existing URLs are
maintained.

As with Geir's, i dropped the "learn" directory.

The projects/*.cwiki files are all converted.

If any documents were not linked in to the existing site
then they will be missing.

Also other resources will be missing. For example,
i needed to manually retrieve a local image at
Process_Description.html and if there were any
directly linked PDF docs then they will be missing.
This can be manually fixed later.

There is still a strange situation with extra documents
in sub-directories of site-author/projects/
e.g. agila, activemq, servicemix
... these seem to be project websites which are
supposed to be elsewhere in the Incubator SVN.
There is also some additional stuff in "geronimo".
None of these documents are in the new site.
I did a quick 'diff -rq' on people.apache.org and there
are differences. Someone should investigate further.

The conversion process can be run at anytime.
It might take us a while to decide, etc.

Now don't let any of this stop you from editing
the current sources in site-author, especially
in site-author/projects status reports. We can
convert again at any time.

This site transformation was done with trunk
of Forrest (after i check some stuff in). I could
check in new commented config to Incubator and
describe how to do it. Lets wait a bit.

Great.

I don't know much about Anakia either. From what i have
seen from using this one, it is very straight-forward.
http://www.apache.org/dev/infra-site.html

Also their is Geir's experiment at incubator/site
to play with and tweak output stylesheets and stuff.

It should not matter to the content editors.
Lets make the conversion process repeatable.
We can then run it a number of times until it
doing a full job.

If someone is brave enough to add that much weight
to the svn checkout of incubator. I don't think that
it is worth it.

My suggestion is for people to concentrate on content
and just one or two of us do manual generation from
time-to-time.

Fantastic. I just watch the incubator-cvs list,
and do it whenever i can.

Well we are not hearing from Geir, and the others
that wanted to move are not helping, so lets try.

I am investigating creating a Forrest output plugin
to do the complete conversion. If Geir or others
come up with another solution then fine, this will
still be a useful tool for Forrest.

Here's the last thread I spotted in the archive:

As usual people are keen, but we lack action.

I lack sufficent experience with anakia (none) and forrest (minimal -- I
just use easy defaults) to drive this migration, but am willing to help
with the grunt level clean up and verification.

I'd like to introduce more site content cleanup, but wanted to wait
until that was resolved.

Yes, i didn't know what to do. The resolving is taking

too long. Finally patches are being contributed. I will
always opt for encouraging the contributors.

Hopefully Geir's transformation process is repeatable.
If not then we can try to manually apply the changes, erk.

A near-term option might be to go ahead and continue updating the
forrest source, but to also:

 - Make it clear on this list and on the web site that this is just a
near-term option pending a final migration plan (and add a note to that
effect to the top of http://incubator.apache.org/guides/website.html).

 - Package forrest in the incubator site build as Noel suggested on
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-general/200512.mbox/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
This would make it easier for anyone who wishes to build and would also
minimize template collisions for those of us who use the formal forrest
0.7 release on another project.

 - I'll offer to help you build/publish (at least this would gain a
builder in a different time zone).

btw, I have a little bandwidth now. If Geir is
mostly there but needs some help, I can offer it.
