You should see what the Sun lawyers made us do on our JavaOne session
slides ;-).

One of those guys, errr, ehemmm, well... It's me... :)

No, seriously, logos and so on are a _very_ serious matter... A couple of
years ago we ran into troubles because we used the sketch of an Native
American Indian sitting in front of a cup of coffee for Java.Apache.ORG
(well, also the name was kind of a pain, got into "troubles" for that too).

You know where you start, you never know where you end up to... (It's a
f***ed up world, indeed, but...)

Pier - who likes Java(TM) :) :) :)

well, yeah, there is that. then again, who knows with those guys? you
might find them monitoring the list ready to make you put '(r)' every
time you use java in an e-mail! :o)

I wouldn't want to even _raise_ the question with Sun... :)

Response to appeal

2001-06-14 Thread Ceki Gülcü

Greetings,

In just 24 hours, over sixty individuals have responded with their
personalized request to Sun. Their requests as well as my critique of
JSR47 can be found at

  http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j/docs/critique.html

I am very happy about both the volume and quality of these requests
but I am sure we can do better. It is becoming increasingly evident
that no one will be happy about the upcoming logging API from Sun. I
invite you to join our community in protest against the pollution of
the Java environment with dubious APIs.

Thank you in advance, Ceki Gülcü

Actually, I think all of the products mentioned in the article
materialized. The COM support in the MS JVM was (and still is) really
cool. The IDE mentioned has several features that NetBeans still lacks
(like syntax checking as-you-type and a startup time shorter than
Ellison's droning speech at J1). Compared to VB or VC++, J++ was pretty
nice. It (and the MS JVM) are pretty antiquated these days, but the
products looked like they had a bright future before the Sun lawsuit
pushed them into the development of .NET.

I wonder: when Microsoft announces things like those, do they even take
it seriously (since everyone knows they'll cancel it later)? Do they
hire people? Allocate time for the tasks using Project? Even draw a
PowerPoint or two to show around?

Alex.
