If you would like to have the new bot in your #gentoo-* channel, would
each channel founder/leader please respond to this thread, stating the
channel name, and that they are the contact for any problems/troubles.

#gentoo-dev-help: I can be the contact.

 Bug reports

Please open a bug in the Gentoo Infrastructure product, using the
'Other' component, and assign it directly to me.

 Custom bot functionality:
 -
Here's all the functionality that we have assembled, beyond the standard
 rbot stuff.
 Bugzilla

 !bug [ZILLA] ID
Looks up bug #ID in the per-channel default or specified bugzilla.

 !bugstats [ZILLA]
Totals of bugs per the bugzilla 'status' field.

 !archstats [ZILLA] [STATUS] [RESO]
Totals of bugs per architecture, optionally with some specific set of
status or resolution values, comma delimited.

status = OPEN, DONE, UNCONFIRMED,NEW,ASSIGNED,REOPENED, RESOLVED, VERIFIED,
 CLOSED
Reso = FIXED, INVALID, WONTFIX, LATER, REMIND, DUPLICATE, WORKSFORME,
   CANTFIX, NEEDINFO, TEST-REQUEST, UPSTREAM
zilla = gentoo xine sourcemage redhat mozilla kernel fdo abisource
apache kde gnome
If you want another bugzilla, file a bug.

 Gentoo-specific
 ===
 !meta [-v] [CAT/]PACKAGE
Print the metadata and optionally herd members for a given package.

 !changelog [CAT/]PACKAGE
 Changelog stats for a package

 !devaway list
 List all away developers.

 !devaway DEVNAME
Display .away message for a single developer.

 !herd HERD
 Show herd members

 !expn NAME
Show the expansion of any public Gentoo mail alias

 !glsa GLSAID
Shows the title and external IDS for any given GLSA ID.

 !earch [CAT/]PACKAGE
Earch output for a given package

 !rdep [CAT/]PACKAGE
Reverse RDEPEND for a given package

 !ddep
Reverse DEPEND for a given package

 What isn't supported yet

 1. !glsa -s TEXT
This used to search for GLSAs that matched that string in their title or
 external IDS.

 2. New bug announcements
Jeeves used to announce brand new bugs to #gentoo-bugs as well as
targeted channels or users, depending on the product, component,
assignee, cc and a number of other factors (deeply nested if/else
trees). The old implementation had this in code entirely, and it would
be nice to avoid having to modify the code whatsoever, and instead have
some domain-specific language for doing this.

Hi,

Currently we have default_* functions implemented in
portage(paludis has these too)
which allow the default implementation of a particular phase
to be called. Another handy function in the default_* series is
function 'default' which simply calls the default function for
whatever phase you're in. The 'default' function patch is probably
before you read this, and a release(2.2_rc7) will soon follow.

Zac has said this release will have support for these functions in
EAPI 2_pre2. Discuss!

So if you inherit an eclass that exports a function will default call
the one from the eclass or the default in the PM?

[gentoo-dev] Retirement

My retirement is probably long overdue as I haven't really been active for
several months. It is now clear to me that Gentoo is not moving in the
direction I had wished for and the last council election indicates that most
current Gentoo developers appear to be satisfied with this current direction.
Therefore farewell. If anybody wants to reach me I can be reached at

[gentoo-dev] Retirement

2008-08-10 Thread Ingmar Vanhassel

Hello list,

As usual with this kind of mails, this has been long overdue, but it's
about time that I retire from Gentoo.
For a while Gentoo hasn't been going into a direction I like, and to me
it doesn't look like that's about to change any time soon. Despite attempts
to convince me of the contrary, I'm not sure I see the technical
advancements that I'd like happening, in Gentoo. That aside there're
numerous non-technical problems behind the scenes, that most devs
probably acknowledge by now...
There're other projects in the Free-Software world that I currently
enjoy putting my time into more, I'm sure it's more than obvious to those
of you who know me which...

So long,
Ingmar Vanhassel, ex-Gentoo KDE developer.

They always say that stuff but never bother explaining what the
direction they wish for actually is. As a user I get the impression

That, and by the time it comes to retirement, one has generally been thru
the arguments several times already, the people that need to know why in
general already do, and there's a feeling it's not worth rehearsing old
positions and bringing up old arguments the one last time. The time for
that has already passed by the time someone's announcing their
retirement, the decision has been made, it's all water under the bridge
now (as the saying goes) and it's time to move on, with a clean break, no
longer blaming anyone or etc as that's what one does /before/ it gets to
this point.

So, indeed, I'm a KDE user here, and it's time to wish them well...

Thanks guys for all the hard work, the product of which I'm running
(still KDE 3.5.9, here) as I type this. Be well, and hope to see you
around the community! There's plenty of projects out there that can use
your help! =8^)

Despite our best efforts Gentoo is not a fun-loving community where
everyone gets along.
If you want to call the fact that the majority of developers want to
go in direction 'X' a cabal; then so be it.

Many folks are happy at the current pace of development. I imagine
these two folks were frustrated at the lack
of new features in the ebuild spec that were readily available in
kdebuild-1 and decided to move on. More power to them I say.
