Re: [gentoo-user] No sound with MythTV

2004-02-01 Thread Bryce
Not with the capture card that he has. MythTV requries 2 things to work
properly, QT ALSA. If ALSA is configured correctly, then he shouldn't have
any problems. Again, in order for mythtv to have worked for me, i had to
remove the OSS support from my kernel (2.6.1) completely, and get alsa to
work( all things as modules) before i got sound myself.

I don't have thing that i can help you, but just make sure that alsa is
working by default( maybe ax the OSS) from the kernel and try again. I was
having problems with sound in mythtv as well( same tv-card), but when i
rebuilt the kernel with all alsa stuff as modules, and removed all OSS stuff,
sound worked just fine in mythtv.

Anyway, the only thing that might be tricky would be keyboards. I'm not

As for mouse, monitor, and video card, no problem. I'm not sure of the

This is not quite the answer your looking for, but if nobody comes up with a
good one; why not try a quick install of midori linux( i believe that is a
distro for crusoe cpu's) and see what it says. Make a note of it, and start

can I force the SATA driver to use DMA from the start?
yeah, its in the kernel config and you disable multi-mode by default.

Maybe it's a known bug and already in bugzilla.

 Have a look in /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files

Please disregard my last message. It was a problem related to lack of space on
/var due to trying to compile openoffice and having it error, and not
cleaning up after it.

Sounds very similar to a new install... but easier! Requires less personal

Thanks for the responce Tom; however this is a long standing problem. Since i
put in a new harddrive and rebuilt gentoo. I didn't have this problem before(
on the old harddrive) and i find it quite annoying now.

Could it maybe be that my account is in a group that somehow writes over being
in the portage group? Or maybe i just belong to too many groups.

Could some people please send me their output for groups so i have an idea
of where mine should be??? I realize its an odd request, but private emails

Have you logged out and back in again? I've noticed that you have to do

this will tell you what groups you are in, if this doesn't match up to

Which one is the server? Windows or Linux?

I did it with Windows being the server.

Emerge (ee... doble click) on OpenSSH setup program. Add the passwd and
group. Setup winvnc to listen ONLY on loopback.

Then on the Linux box (client)

   $ ssh -L 5900:localhost:5900 windowsbox
   $ vncviewer -encondings tight localhost:0
   (I'm using tightvnc)

The other way around can't be that hard. I guess you can use PuTTY on
Windows to open the tunnel, the rest is almost identical.

didn't know that when the problem occurred.

Thanks everyone for helping in your own little ways.

 Bryce,

This error occurs, when the classpath is not set properly.
You have to set the classpath before running/compiling your
 java files.

 export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:current-dir

 Hope this helps you out.

 Cheers

Re: [gentoo-user] glitch in GL

2003-04-05 Thread bryce verdier
I had the same problem, and in doing a little digging on my system i found out
it was [EMAIL PROTECTED] running in the background. So maybe if you have something
like [EMAIL PROTECTED], or seti, running in the background that could be causing
your glitch.

I am having a problem with any GL program. About every 20 seconds the
screen stutters. This happens with nVidia drivers after 2880. My
assumption is that there is another process running that is causing
this. I am attemping to use top -Si in batch mode to find out what
process is causing the glitch. Is there a better way?

[gentoo-user] retating mirros

2003-04-01 Thread bryce verdier
Is there a way to have emerge rotate mirrors... so you know, once it downloads
source from ibiblio, then if you have a second mirror in your make.conf file
it downloads from that one, and just goes in that cycle?

thanks,

Re: [gentoo-user] Opinion Poll: KDE Vs Gnome

I'm not sure which one that is. Waimea is a varient of blackbox that
has no toolbar and to shift to a new desktop you move your cursor to
edge of window but the desktops can be vertical and horizontal. With
ice it reminds me of kde1x for some reason and I'm still messing around
with it before I form much opinion on it really. There are text based
wm tho I forget the name of it. Evilwm is really barebones from what I
can see tho actually not tried it just visited the website. I belive
most give a right click menu and in some cases middle button menu.
Afterstep and Windowmanager I think tho had just the square icons on the
screen and it was somewhat weird manuvering around it. Enlightenment is
diffrent and not sure quite how to describe that one. I suggest looking
at the gentoo online package database list of window managers and
visiting their official sites. There is one rather neat one there
called tree but tho I find it neat I'm not enough of a power user to
 fully benifit from it.

To continue along those lines, my money(if i had money ;) ) goes to xfce. The
look and feel of CDE, and its nice and light weight, so i can push my poor
out of date box on other computing fuctions.

I think so, cause for me, mozilla was opening in about 1/2 the time as before.
And the same for kde.

I like it!!

The odd thing was, after a restart the bonus seemed to have disappeared, do i
have to prelink everytime?

[gentoo-user] host keys for ssh

I'm sorry if some people might find this too easy of a question, but I've
emerged openssh, but when i try to start sshd, i keep getting errors about
host keys. I've looked through the man pages concerning ssh-keygen. But
nothing there points directly too host keys.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
