Re: [gentoo-user] Re: X server - no screens found

2003-11-12 Thread DB Wong
The log file doesn't show the usual module loading info. Even though it scans
your bus and finds the card, all the basic modules (libbitmap, libpcidata, etc)
aren't reported as loaded. Looking closer for the usual message about the
ModulePath (which doesn't require an XF86Config entry), I see that it isn't
being spit out as part of the usual routine (where it should be around is
marked %% HERE %% below)

Try adding to the Files section of XF86Config

ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/Server/modules"

(or wherever your modules are kept; two locations are likely a minimal because
no default is reported)

Send me a new log if you want. Maybe the above will fix. Sending message to
list as well because my last mail bounced.

Thinking about it again, you should add the "noauto" to the options so it
doesn't try to mount on boot with no floopy in the drive. That will cause the
error in the first case as well.

The first case looks okay to me but the block device error will come from the
second case (/dev/floppy) because that's a directory (try /dev/floppy/0)

Have you tried building it again? The same thing happens on my box but a
recompile usually works. Still haven't figured out why but would like to know.
I get busybox related errors about not being able to stat the keymap file
consistently but these don't seem be the problem.

Is it possible that the /usr/src/linux link wasn't updated so you just rebuilt
the previous one. Then it would look like nothing was installed.

Also check in XF86Config that the Screen section uses a DefaultDepth/Depth of
16. nv goes higher but nvidia won't.

What happens when you create a tar archive (tar) from a local directory and
then unpack it? What happens when you create an compressed archive (tgz)
locally and uncompress it? What happens when you create a bzip2 compressed
archive?
Do these give the correct times for the files?

If this fixed the problem, then why were you able to login with newly created
users before you removed the 1600x1200 entry? Sounds like something else is
going on here.

If changing the screen resolution fixes a login/logout problem for selected
users, then I'd probably have the computer exorcised :)

Also check that you included the "Use FIFO/DMA" option in the kernel config.
The "PCSPP, TRISTATE" is the basic operating mode and very slow. Check your
bios to see if ECP or EPP is turned on (ECP is best for printers, EPP for
parallel port disks, avoid the ECP+EPP unless you have both through one port).

btw, it looks like you have two ports with a single io port. Shouldn't one of
these be 0x278?

Nothing. It's the gnome/gnome-failsafe sessions that you want to look at.

Have you run the gnome configurator (under the System icon) to see if root is
allowed to login at all (I don't recall if you did/could before)?

If newly created users can login and off, then the gnome system/default files
are fine. It's your user account that contains something weird. As an
experiment, move all the gnome related directories under $HOME to some other
place. See if you still have the same problem. If you don't, then you can
start over and if you're interested in finding the problem, compare
files/directories. If the problem still exists and you're really keen on
finding it, try to break the newly created user account in a methodical way to
isolate possible causes. If you're not keen, just use one of the new accounts
and maybe ask a gnome related group.

> Getting frustrated about this issue. I ask myself what might happen if i pull

Sometimes when improper shutdowns occur, the file recovery process on the next
boot up "repairs" the filesystem but it can produce text files with a lot of
binary crap in them. Open files at the time of shutdown are likely to subject
to this.

No. Use "man XF86Config" and look up the word "virtual" for the Display
subsection.

To find 1280x960, look in your log file (/var/log/XFree86.x.log, where x is
some integer, likely 0) and see if it is recognized during the probe phase. If
so, see if it is listed as a Modeline in /etc/X11/XF86Config. If its in the log
but not a modeline, add it. Then add it in the Modes section of the Display
section in XF86Config

I'm not sure how complete the X scan is but lookup your monitor at the
manufacture's website to see it it valid. If you can do 1600x1200, likely you
can do 1280x960 so that's not really the issue. I'll bet the numbers you need
are in the log file, but that's a guess.

On the gdm greeter screen (the gdm login) there should be icons for Language,
