[gentoo-user] vmware install issue
Trying to install vmware. I make it to the config.pl part. Run it and this is what I get: Building the vmnet module. make: Entering directory `/tmp/vmware-config0/vmnet-only' make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-config0/vmnet-only' Unable to make a vmnet module that can be loaded in the running kernel: insmod: a module named vmnet already exists There is probably a slight difference in the kernel configuration between the set of C header files you specified and your running kernel. You may want to rebuild a kernel based on that directory, or specify another directory. For more information on how to troubleshoot module-related problems, please visit our Web site at "http://www.vmware.com/download/modules/modules.html"; and "http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/prebuilt_modules_linux.html";. Execution aborted. So I go and try to locate this vmnet module that supposably exists and this is what I get: [EMAIL PROTECTED] proc # locate vmnet /dev/vmnet0 /dev/vmnet1 /dev/vmnet2 /dev/vmnet3 /dev/vmnet4 /dev/vmnet5 /dev/vmnet6 /dev/vmnet7 /dev/vmnet8 /dev/vmnet9 /lib/dev-state/vmnet0 /lib/dev-state/vmnet1 /lib/dev-state/vmnet2 /lib/dev-state/vmnet3 /lib/dev-state/vmnet4 /lib/dev-state/vmnet5 /lib/dev-state/vmnet6 /lib/dev-state/vmnet7 /lib/dev-state/vmnet8 /lib/dev-state/vmnet9 /usr/portage/metadata/cache/net-misc/vmnet-0.4 /usr/portage/net-misc/vmnet /usr/portage/net-misc/vmnet/Manifest /usr/portage/net-misc/vmnet/files /usr/portage/net-misc/vmnet/files/digest-vmnet-0.4 /usr/portage/net-misc/vmnet/vmnet-0.4.ebuild /usr/portage/net-misc/vmnet/ChangeLog /proc/vmnet Any ideas what I can('t) delete safely that might make this work correctly? [gentoo-user] Kernel Compile Issue
Doesn't seem to matter if I do a make menuconfig or genkernel both fail with the following errors: make menuconfig /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r7/hdepend:2108: *** unterminated variable reference. Stop. genkernel * Running "make mrproper"... /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r7/hdepend:2108: *** unterminated variable reference. Stop. * Running "make oldconfig"... /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r7/hdepend:2108: *** unterminated variable reference. Stop. Any ideas on what going wrong? I even tried reemerging the kernel source and that didn't help me out... Help please... -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

[gentoo-user] Cups not showing printer models...
Have installed cups, hpijs, foomatic. Problem is when i go to add a printer everything goes great until its time to choose the model of printer. There is nothing listed but the default cups driver. While this works for a couple of printers (ie black and white no frills), the problem comes when I need to set up for a laserjet 5500, 8000, 4000,4150, etc... There are no listings for them. Only thing listed there is CUPS v1.1 for the deskjet, laser jet, and new deskjet series Where are the drivers installed by hpijs? How do I make them show up in cups? All the printers are network printers with internal jetdirect cards. So setting them up isn't a issue beyond the drivers and associated configuration allowed by them... -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] Re: Install DL380 Problem
Did a manual kernel recompile as someone had suggested and now I am one step closer but am still not getting the boot. Current error msg is: VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem). VFS: Cannot open root device "cciss/c0d0p3" or 68:03 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 68:03 I have changed the root= between the cciss/c0d0p3 and the cciss/disk0/part3 with no luck. It mounts it so it sees it long enough to do that then decides it can't open it. Any ides from anyone? Friday is my deadline now to get this box working or switch to redhat. I would much rather use Gentoo than RH. But as far as management is consirned I have just wasted 1.5 weeks trying this linux distro rather than one they know works... -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] Install DL380 Problem
I used genkernel to compile the kernel. Actually I have recompiled thekernel a couple of times with genkernel since I started getting this error msg. All though one of my Unix co-workers thinks its a init issue trying to create the console. From: Luis Morales <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Install DL380 Problem Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2003 4:44:02pm I have an dl-380 too. Boot your server with live cd, and rebuid your kernel with genkernel. # emerge genkernel # genkernel This tool made an kernel image like to the boot live cd. I believe that your problem is the fs kernel support. Regards, LM -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] Install DL380 Problem
Referencing http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=10380&highlight=compaq+raid Installation goes went fine once I found the above reference documentation. Except when I rebooted I got the following error: RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0 Freeing initrd memory: 1458k freed VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filessystem). kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly. Trying to move old root to /initrd ... failed Unmounting old root Trying to free ramdisk memory ... okay Freeing unused kernel memory: 148k freed Warning: unable to open initial console. Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. I am using grub as the docs above showed how to get that installed properly (or so I thought). Below is my grub.conf file: default 0 timeout 30 splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz title=Gentoo XFS root (hd0,0) kernel (hd0,0)/boot/kernel-2.4.20-xfs-r3 root=/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd-2.4.20-xfs-r3 root=/dev/cciss/c0d0p1 I added "root=/dev/cciss/c0d0p1" to the grub.conf after the initrd line thinking that might have fixed the issue as I had not added it before. But that didn't help any either. Any thoughts as to where the problem might lie? -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] Problems with Compaq
try looking under /dev/cciss/disk0 Thats where I found the drives finally on a dl380 I am currently setting up for Gentoo... I also posted this info in the Installation forum on the Gentoo site -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] update-modules returns error
I get the following error msg when I do a update-modules: bash-2.05b# update-modules depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs-r3/kernel/drivers/net/starfire.o What is starfire.o and why am I just now getting error msg's after setting up alsa when I didn't get error msg's about doing a update-modules before? -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] Having Issues with X
Followed the doc on the gentoo site for setting up X, but all I get is the following: (II) MGA: driver for Matrox chipsets: mga2064w, mga1064sg, mga2164w, mga2164w AGP, mgag100, mgag100 PCI, mgag200, mgag200 PCI, mgag400, mgag550 (II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0 (EE) No devices detected. Fatal server error: no screens found Screen blanks out then comes back with the following error. I know the setting for the monitor and video card and plugged those in when asked during the X config. So I am ata loss as to where my problem is. I have looked thru the log file and up to the point of failure I have not seen any error msg's. Any thoughts on where my problem lies? Here is the info at the top of the log file: XFree86 Version 4.3.0 Release Date: 27 February 2003 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6 Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.20-xfs-r2 i686 [ELF] Build Date: 11 August 2003 -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] Kernel compile issue??
I'm not sure if my kernel compile is finishing correctly. I am setting up from a stage 3 tarball, and when I get to the end of what the compile is doing and gives me a command prompt I get no indication the compile finished correctly. The last line before the command prompt reads: if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map 2.40.20-xfs-r3; fi Now I've never compiled a kernel before so I might be wrong in my thoughts that I would have gotten a msg stating it completed correctly. Any ideas? -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] Kernel compile issue??
The funny thing is I didn't make any config changes to the Kernel when I was in the configmenu. I just saved it and went along with the compile. Figured its general base setting would be enough to make it a working kernel. But I was wrong. when I went to boot the system I got the following error msg: ds: no socket drivers loaded kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, error = 2 VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:03 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:03 now the boot is pointed to /dev/sda3 like the example in the install instructions show. (example for /dev/hda3 but the system I am using is a scsi). Thoughts? Or am I doomed to start over from the begining? > From: "David H.
