Is there anything to watch out for when using these ebuilds? Do they coexist
nicely with xfree86? (I'm guessing by the tone of your email that they do
not).. Any docs on what to do yet? I've been wanting to play around with
kdrive but have not wanted to kill anything in the process.. (I do have
vmware so if nothing else I will install gentoo in this - I just want to play
and test..)

Thanks.

gcc-config (I believe) checks your /usr/lib/gcc-lib/ folder for entries. In my
case, gcc-config --list-profiles returned:

[1] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.2.2
[2] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.2

Is gcc emerged correctly? I did not have to do anything to make this work like
this - "it just did".

This is the start of your problem - look above at the compile line. -I/usr/
local/include is not the directory where gentoo includes it's "includes". Try
editing the makefile and change the includes to include /usr/include and
maybe also an include dir of your /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.x/
include/g++-v3

unmerge it and remerge openssl-0.9.6? The current ebuild fails to build the
compatibility libraries. It is known and I think it will be fixed in the next
update to this package. revdep-rebuild is buggier more often than not - at
least I've never had it work correctly for me. This is probably the simplest

You should be able to switch out of X with a CTRL-ALT-F1. Then it's simply a
matter of killall gdm as root.

If you can't login as root I doubt it's a configuration problem - then again,
root probably isn't allowed to login to X (unless you configured it that
way.)

What DE are you trying to open? KDE, Gnome? Check the error logs...

Ethics have different definitions based on your social norms and behaviors.
Perhaps your ethics are different than mine. This does not make them more or

I think what he is trying to say is in your initial email you were trying to

it must be started by issuing the command /etc/init.d/apache2 start.

Then teach your children what to say and what not to say. Don't try to enforce
that on other people. Hearing a word or seeing a word will not damage them -
they will be reading Huck Finn soon enough.

People on this list ARE helpful. But there are rule-mongers as well.

Once again, these words - are they ill-sounding to you? To him? To me? Based
on whose values? If you find these words to be unacceptable in public, don't
say them in public - but don't force a morality on me. I choose my own choice
of words to use. Until the great censor-adepts of the list come to smite me
down for protecting someone's use of a curse, I will continute to protect
that choice for myself and others.

You can say whatever you want. In return, I can say whatever I want. It seems
fair enough to me. It's your choice whether or not you swear, and whether or
not you shelter your children from it. But don't force that choice on me or
others. (Filter those words from yours/their system. That's not too hard to
accomplish, and you're taking responsibility for your own actions as opposed
to others.)

Portage stores file information in /var/db/pkg - anything under /var/tmp is
just that - temp files that can be safely deleted. Granted, in some ways it
is nice to keep that stuff around, but I recently ran out of diskspace as I
had 5gigs plus on /var/tmp/portage. Ack! Remove everything under /var/

the agpgart error you are receiving means that there is support compiled into
your kernel, but it is not finding any support agp devices. This means that
either the wrong support is compiled in, or you have no agp card. Judging by
the age of your device (RAGE) I would assume that no, you do not have agp
support. But it is best to read your documentation for your hardware (you did
not tell us what it is) and find out for yourself.

The RENDER extension being X's way of rendering primitives, including fonts.
It has nothing to do with glxgears - which is all done by the glx (opengl)

Only useful if you have a tv-out. AFAIK, not necessary either as the nvidia

Useful if your video card has the Video-in link (for watching video/movies and

opengl-update is run by the nvidia-glx.ebuild, so it should not be necessary.

Agpgart is fine to enable, and is the default. The nvidia driver states that
dri should be removed from XF86Config (see lines 357-375 of /usr/share/doc/
nvidia-glx-1.0.4496-r1/README.gz)

You should also remove the following lines:
Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

I doubt it causes a fatal error, but if you check you XF86 log I'll bet it
throws an error and does not load the dri module

It is not a bug - it is a "feature" of the nvidia-kernel. It allows you to
build modules for any given kernel by following the link in /usr/src/linux.
This is not going to change anytime soon. Just be aware that if you need to
update your drivers in the future that you should modify that symlink to
point to the appropriate kernel source that you wish to build the modules
for. Sorry, I forgot about this little "feature", else I would have warned
you from the start. :-(

Also - I read in another thread responding to this about running opengl-update
nvidia - this is only necessary if you've changed your opengl drivers. The
ebuild for nvidia-opengl runs this command for you once you've emerged the
nvidia-opengl package.

If, in the future, you upgrade XFree, you will need to run the command
"opengl-update nvidia" again. It only needs to happen when your opengl libs
have changed.

Enjoy!

Quite simple, really.

$ emerge nvidia-kernel
$ emerge nvidia-glx

Remove any references to glcore or dri from the start of XF86Config. Change
the driver to

Driver="nvidia"

Under this line, add

Option "RenderAccel" "true"
to enable hardware rendering in X.

Viola! 2d/3d accelerated desktop with nvidia drivers!

Only with the rivafb - as I mentioned, vesafb works fine (although it is
spotty from kernel to kernel). I am running 2.6.0-test9-mm1 using the vesafb
with the nvidia drivers with ZERO problems. This was not true with -test7 and
test-8.

The card in question is vesa compliant, so it *should* work just fine.

It has been my experience that any "necessary downgrades" that need to occur
are only for a select few with problems - and these are pretty rare. If you
are having problems and need to "downgrade", then you will know.

I have not used anything but an emerge -UD world (weekly) for almost an entire

It looks as if an ebuild was submitted back in April - but it does not look
like it was ever entered into the portage tree. You can download and install
this yourself - and with a little tweaking it should run the latest version
and also install correctly into the new web-apps home (/var/www/localhost I
believe).. If you do tweak it, resubmit it on this bug and it might actually
be introduced into portage. The screenshots on netjukes website look pretty
nice!

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18609 is the bug with the ebuild/
digest/updates as attachments.

This is caused by the lack of the NVIDIA module being loaded into the kernel -
type lsmod and you should see a line that says nvidia..

Type "modprobe nvidia" as root - then try startx as a user. If this does not
work, you will want to make sure you compiled devfs into your kernel... :-)

I never use this stuff either. Unmerge it and mask it. Problem solved.

What's your issue with /etc/issue? IIRC, it's the MOTD so if you change it, it
won't get overwritten (unless YOU do so with etc-update).

Ummm. Emerge vanilla-kernel? Stock - no patches. No IUSE or USE. It downloads,
unpacks. That's it.

As to number 2 - there is no rule set in stone enough not to be broken. The
kernel sources are a good example of an area where there are a lot of
different patches that could be added or removed based on what you have/want/
need. By "hardwiring them" you create an even worse "problem" then the one
you try to fix with next scenario - a different kernel for every imaginable
situation.

Also, development-sources is vanilla. Check the ebuild.

Vanilla sources are unaltered - for the most part. If they are not "generic"
enough for you, download and install it from kernel.org. Problem solved.

I like the choices in kernel! Just ignore the rest if you don't like them. The
install guide tells the newbie installer how to get through it.

Besides, according to a recent thread on gentoo-dev, some of the
kernel-sources are going away due to lack of maintainers. So, there you go.

Not a bad idea at all - in fact, the first one so far that I think would be a
great FEATURE - silence.

But you don't have to wait for EULA interactivity - and AFAIK it's only on two
different ebuilds. Add an ACCEPT_LICENSES line to make.conf - add all the
licenses you wish to accept and ebuilds won't stop on license agreements
anymore. Check the ebuild (like enemyterritory) for the License Type

Why? This is not a vanilla system - it is a Gentoo System. I expect that the
gentoo dev's will make enough modifications to the vanilla to work as
expected with the other parts of the Gentoo System. Certain amounts of
vanilla-ness are fine, but I would hope the devs would continue to patch the
ebuilds and make them work correctly on my system. Do you think that Debian
is vanilla? Can you name to me even ONE vanilla distro? LFS - perhaps - but
even that will lose "vanilla-ness" as you make modifications.

As I mentioned before, these are issues you can take care of on your own
system without modifying every

Nvidia plays with Xinerama using it's proprietary technology called Twinview.
You will have to add a couple of lines to XF86Config.

Under the Driver section (device="nvidia") you will need to add

Option TwinView "enabled"

There are a few other options you will need to add - they are too "setup
specific" for me to go over all of them. The readme for the nvidia driver is
located in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx-1.0.4496/README.gz. Check Appendix I for
all the instuctions on setting this up. Make sure you include everything it
tells you for this to work correctly.

This was just posted on gentoo-dev:
QUOTE:
Ruby 1.8.1 will be available in the near future (I just committed
ruby-1.8.1_pre2.ebuild) and I think it is the time to switch to
1.8. If users want ruby-1.6.8 along with 1.8.x they will be able to

concentrate on supporting packages for 1.8 from now on but keep 1.6.8

It appears that it is slotted so you will have both side-by-side. 1.8 will not
be removed - you will probably need to specify ruby versions to emerge until
this gets sorted out completely..

Which kernel version are you using? The only dependancy nvidia-kernel has is
for a virtual/linux-sources - which means as long as you have any
kernel-sources installed, the nvidia-kernel ebuild's dependancies are
satisfied.

PS - emerge -U implies emerge -uU so you only have to type emerge -U.. ;-)

I never doubted you - all I'm saying is that if it's not working one way, try
it another. No document can cover all various configuration possibilities. No
document is set in stone. If you keep running against a stopper, and nothing
works the conventional way, try the unconventional way. What have you got to

I ran into random lockup issues with vmware when I had compiled my kern
modules with a different version of gcc than my kernel. It throws an error
and you have to force the config to proceed if this is the case - for good
reason.

1. Just run /opt/vmware/bin/vmware-config.pl and pay special attention to any
warnings it might give. It will rebuild the kern modules. (Must do this as
root!!!)
2. Run /etc/init.d/vmware restart (just for kicks)
3. Try vmware as a user - run from an xterm. Pay special attention to any
strange errors.

Re: [gentoo-user] vmware crashes all the time

2003-10-31 Thread Matt Chorman
What version of vmware are you running? What kernel version are you running?
Did you compile the kernel modules with the same version of gcc that you
compiled your kernel with? Have you made sure the vmware modules are loaded
before you run vmware?
