This didn't work for me. Maybe a problem with the server. But I

Excuse this, I reposted, since my own mail didn't showed up on the list.
Is it because the list doesn't send one to the poster anymore? If, it
would be, in my opinion, a good idea to change this back to the old
behaviour: sending a copy to the poster too. Just making shure, the mail
reached the list!

Yes, but it stays broken. No one out there using openmotive?

Yes, I had to, since there where errors with nearly every package. "emerge
-up --deep world" stopped immediately giving the advice to run
"/usr/lib/portage/bin/fix-db.pl", which in tune told to delete various
directories in "/var/db/pkg". After doing the expected: deleting the given
directory, then re-emerging the package, the errors started showing up
again... I didn't got happy with this way handling the errors!

After some discussion one expected to wipe out the whole directory
"/var/db/pkg", re-emerging all packages. This made the errors vanish, but
didn't restore the complete package-list. Now I am searching a way to
restore the complete list from what is installed.

I am sure there must be a way using something like "find . -type f"
producing a list of all files on the system, then generating a package
list from this one.

packages --- on a system equiped with kde, gnome, various tools, ... any
idea how I can get a correct list of installed packages? It should be a
number near by 600!

"qpkg -I" does not give all installed things back, only 108 installed
packages. "emerge -s kdebase" reports kde not beeing installed at all:

Daemontools does not provide for multiple runlevels. With init.d you may
"init 2" to switch to a running multiuser system without network. "init
3", "4" or "5" will bring up the "default" runlevel (have a look at
"/etc/inittab" on how this is done).

Mr. D.J. Bernstein now, unfortunately, isn't very helpful, making such ---
requested --- changes as allowing for more than one runlevel for
daemontools.

In his, understandable opinion, this would make daemontools more
complicated, and given by means:
[...] there are only two types of programs:
  1. Those being simple, all error are obviously seen, and
  2. those being complex enough errors are not obvious.

(BTW: whom does this cite belong to? Anyone out there who knows?)

Mr. Bernstein wants to keep his code as close as possible to point 1 ---
even if this means ignoring wishes of a majority of people.

In my opinion daemontools has the power of replacing "/etc/init.d" scripts
completely, but only if adding some functionality. One of these is having
more than one runlevel available. An other point is the license Mr.
Bernstein provides. Without these most sysadmins and programmers will
further ignore them.

Just start out reading "http://cr.yp.to/djb.html"; and read the license provided with
daemontools. It could be a good idea
to read the dispute about changing from daemontools to the actual init.d
system in the archives of "gentoo-users".

[gentoo-user] Problem with libquicktime / quicktime4linux

2003-07-21 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Hi!

I've tried to "emerge -up --deep world"
yew root # emerge -up --deep world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B] media-libs/quicktime4linux (from pkg
media-libs/libquicktime-0.9.2_pre1)
[blocks B] media-libs/libquicktime (from pkg
media-libs/quicktime4linux-1.5.5-r1)

I've unmerged both: libquicktime and quicktime4linux. Now:
yew root # emerge -up --deep world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] media-libs/libquicktime-0.9.2_pre1
[ebuild N ] media-libs/quicktime4linux-1.5.5-r1

emerge want's to install both of them! I've looked into "world", but I
couldn't find them there. Now: how to get out of this circle? Whatever I
install. One blocks the other and some programms seem to want libquicktime
others quicktime4linux.

"ls -i" told they where using the same inodes, but had different directory
entries. I forced a file system check: "fsck -f". These duplicates got
mostly renamed to "*.~0". Some where copied to "lost+found". I did not
loose any file. After removing the renamed ones and cleaning up
"lost+found" the directory was fine again!

My first try was to remove these files by "rm -i" but this removed
magically both directory entries.

Doing an "fsck -f" before was the right way!

Thanks!

[gentoo-user] lots of duplicates in /usr/lib

2003-07-14 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Hi!

on one system I have found lots of duplicate libs in /usr/lib:

-rw-r--r--1 root root 1303154 May 25 02:48 cracklib_dict.pwd
-rw-r--r--1 root root 1303154 May 25 02:48 cracklib_dict.pwd
...
-rw-r--r--2 root root 561 Apr 28 22:42 gnomemmConf.sh
-rw-r--r--2 root root 561 Apr 28 22:42 gnomemmConf.sh
...
-rw-r--r--2 root root 1006 Mar 26 19:22 libBrokenLocale.a
-rw-r--r--2 root root 1006 Mar 26 19:22 libBrokenLocale.a
...
-rw-r--r--2 root root37294 Jan 27 16:14
libORBitCosNaming.a
-rw-r--r--2 root root37294 Jan 27 16:14
libORBitCosNaming.a
...

there are 307 duplicates found within "/usr/lib" (using "ls /usr/lib !
uniq -d ! wc -l").

Any idea where these come from?

Kernel: 2.4.21

[gentoo-user] wine broken?

2003-07-03 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Hi!

I am having problems running Windows apps in wine (especially Notes R5).
They start, then terminate without any warning. Debug -Log looks as if I
had selected quit or exit inside the application.

Anyone else having the same problems?

[gentoo-user] emerging file-roller

2003-05-27 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Hi!

I've had some problems emerging file-roller. None of the dependancies was
automaticaly solved by emerge:

Here is what went on:
emerge file-roller
gave an error: library libgdk was missing

emerge x11-libs/gtk+
emerged OK.

emerge file-roller
gave an error: library libgnomecanvas missing

emerge libgnomecanvas
gave an error: library libglade missing

emerge libglade
emerged OK

emerge libgnomecanvas
emerged OK

emerge file-roller
gave an error: libbonoboui missing

emerge libbonoboui
emerged OK

emerge file-roller
gave an error libgnomeui missing

emerge libgnomeui
emerged OK

emerge file-roller
emerged OK

shouldn't have "emerge file-roller" have emerged
x11-libs/gtk+
libglade
libgnomecanvas
libbonoboui
libgnomeui
file-roller

without user interaction?

There where various other packages not building automatically:

kde-base/kdebase -> not building kdelibs
x11-libs/vte -> not building libvte

etc., etc.,...

Any idea what is wrong here?

[gentoo-user] ypbind big big bug

2003-03-26 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Hi!

I have configured ypbind this way:

/etc/conf.d/ypbind:
# Config file for /etc/init.d/ypbind
# NIS domain (not necessary the same as DNS domain)
YP_DOMAIN=NLM

/etc/yp.conf:
ypserver 10.2.107.208
ypserver 10.2.107.209

if I start ypbind now:
/etc/init.d/ypbind start
... no nis servers found

Looking for my configuration, I'll found "/etc/yp.conf" overwritten:
domain fqhn broadcast

this shouldn't happen!

1. my NIS servers do not react on a broadcast request.
2. the domain given in "/etc/conf.d/ypbind" is overwritten this way.

[gentoo-user] Building a compilation server

2003-03-06 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Hi!

I would like to build a compilation server for gentoo. I have to maintain
some clients. Compilation takes time. Installing binaries is fast

 Now:
- I don't like to install all packages on my compilation server.
- I want it to compile all new packages automatically for all defined
platforms.

Any idea how I can set up such a beast?
