Looking at the screenshot, what's weird is that T-bird seems to be working.
The window is drawn, the menus and buttons are displayed... the program
appears to be running just fine (also implied by the absence of errors).
The only thing that's really missing is the contents of the panes.

And that suggests a font problem (i.e., the font or fonts to be used for
the text displayed in the folder, message and preview panes is not
found, thus that text cannot be displayed).

Since your menus and buttons (the application window elements) are
displaying properly, can you successfully get to
Edit=Preferences=Fonts and change the display fonts to a font that you
are sure that you have and see if there is some improvement? I think
this is where the pane display fonts are controlled (the window element
fonts are controlled by your Window Manager).

Holly

Looking at your screenshot, it shows a little box that looks like a
folder at the right hand corner of the pane where your folder listing
should be. What does clicking on that do?

I've had a similar problem before seems like I had to click on that
folder and then remove some ? marks.

Nothing!

What I did was:
0. I renamed my old 'default' tbird directory to something arbitrary
1. I ran tbird, which then created a new 'default' directory.
2. Added my account information again
3. Copied my email from my old tbird directory to the new one
4. Copied my addressbook info.

After 80 minutes of doing this junk (and a number of other things!), I
am back to using my email client.

What have you tried?

Do you get any hints from the messages shown when launching from an x
terminal?

Do you own it?

If not, as root try:
chown -R user:user /home/user

haven't done anything with the ~/.thunderbird directory.

Check your ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini file. Does the Path variable
match the path that holds your mail?

Yeah, it does.

I think I'll try and re-install tbird.
