[gentoo-user] Idea
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 eList, Hi everybody.. Every time I use emerge -S to look for something I've got to wait an eternity for results to appear.. so I feed up with this and I was thinking to turn the whole portage system (the pseudo database I mean) into mysql, what do you think about that? As far I could see It's not so hard to translate. In this moment I'm writing a bash script (no pyhton knowledge sorry) to try to full the mysql database with the portage data. And obviusly the benefits are a lot. So.. I'm expecting your thoughts about this. - -- ..:: [EMAIL PROTECTED] :.:. ...: [EMAIL PROTECTED] .:.. ::.. I'm expecting your thoughts about this. There are many _VERY_ long threads about this. Please dig through the archives. I do not want another long thread like this to start up again - it's just not bandwidth-smart. I will summate the thread though: MySQL is too big and cumbersome, OpenLDAP would be the best solution; however, it is not feasable to be implemented any time soon. -- Zack Gilburd http://tehunlose.com GnuPG Key ID: A79A45668240AB6C pgp0.pgp Description: signature

I just extracted descriptions by simple bash script to plain text file and use grep for searching :-). It's fast enough too. noro PS. It's possible to bzip2 it and use bzgrep as well. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] idea for a installer
i got this idea for a installer. the livecd should contain X, and then a installer(could be made in pygtk or something) the installer should be like split into 2 areas, on the left side the install doc should be, and on right there should be a terminal thing, and some action buttons, and then you should be able to press some buttons like sync and bootstrap, and the install guide should contain links so the terminal like thing could autoopen the file(for example make.conf) and the installer should keep track of everything, and be able to create a file for autoplaying the install automatically if its needed, it would be smart if the system got corrupted or for multiply install just an idea, what do you think? -- Regards, Redeeman () ascii ribbon campaign - against html e-mail /\- against microsoft attachments -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] idea for a installer
Check through the mail list archives and Gentoo projects. Someone is working on a GUI installer. At 10:11 AM 11/20/2003, you wrote: i got this idea for a installer. be smart if the system got corrupted or for multiply install just an idea, what do you think? What do we think as in our opinions ?? I've personally got NOTHING against text-mode installers myself. Honestly, what benefit does a GUI installer give over a text one ? Gentoo is a distro where you *need* to know how to use the command line and I like it that way. Otherwise, you may want to check into the -devel mailing lists as well as gentoo-desktop and gentoo-desktop-research. Hall -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

Hall Stevenson wrote: Honestly, what benefit does a GUI installer give over a text one ? Well, a gui installer could: display the whole package tree (optional one large list). Those which are installed are marked, so you'll always see whats going on. When clicking on a packet, all information pops up on the right side of the window, including short description, dependencies (in both ways), a checkmark if the package is part of the world file and/or the virtual list or if it's masked. In the package info window, there are buttons like: (Re-)Install [+ optional reinstall deps also] Update Uninstall [+ optional depclean / clean] ... Of course if one clicks on a dependency, the package view would change to that package, etc. etc. I could imagine *some* features because i prefer GUI apps, no doubt that the shell tools are needed for rescue-situations or for compiling low-level stuff like glibc.
