[gentoo-user] KDE sound problems

2005-01-25 Thread Robert S
I am running kde 3.3.2 on an amd64. All packages are the latest stable
amd64 ones except for the alsa ones which are ~amd64.

I'm having a few sound problems:

1. When I enable the sound system, there are no system notification sounds.
I am able to get them working if I do Control center - Sound and
Multimedia - System notifications - Player settings - Use external
player - artsplay. Why don't notifications work by default? Is this the
correct way of enabling system notifications?

2. Frequently when I log in there is no sound. After a few minutes a dialog
comes up saying Sound server fatal error: cpu overload, aborting. I've
had a few suggestions from a previous posting, but I haven't been able to
get rid of this one.

Unfortunately I haven't yet had a version of kde which has been free of
obvious bugs. How does gnome compare?? I haven't spent much time with it.

I have always tried new releases of kde when they are out.
and somehow I always land up going back to gnome.

Try gnome-light

its refreshing

USE=oss emerge alsa-driver

 Hello.

 I have a problem with sounds and KDE.

 I have ALSA compiled in as per instructions, and sound works perfectly
 from XMMS and ogg123... However, on KDE startup, I get the following
 message:

 Sound server informational message:
 Error while initializing the sound driver
 device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such file or directory)
 The sound server will continue to use the null output device

 However, as reported earlier, if I start XMMS music works fine.

 There is no file/directory called /dev/dsp

 Any help in getting sound working in KDE would be very much appreciated.

then you use the oss emulation of alsa, if you really want to make use of alsa
use this:

USE=alsa emerge arts
