I'm having the same problem here (I've got a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra). I can't seem to
get 1600x1200, which I'd really like since it's my monitor's native resolution.
Anybody have this working?

Also, does rivafb cooperate with the nvidia closed-source driver? If so, we may be
able to run that. Thanks a lot.

[gentoo-user] Kernel 2.6test11+ framebuffer + nvidia

2003-12-12 Thread SN
Hi guys,

did anyone manage to get framebuffer going with the latest 2.6 kernel?
I have tried all kinds of options, recompiled about 10 times and still can
only boot without framebuffer , when I supply the vga argument I get a
darkscreen although machine boots. Some options even cause a completet
lockup.

I can only boot and watch messages if I don't supply the vga=xxx argument.

I have a GeForce4 MX 440

Yeah, looks like the only working option is to use the vesafb , I tried
rivafb and vga16 and the other settings for console framebuffer ad so on,
just didn't think vesa would do.

Kernel is already compiling, will see if it works that way in a couple of
minutes

No error messages on

No, I do not have a RIVA card. But that is not
relevant, as the rivafb module does support
not only riva cards, but other NVidia based
cards as well, like my GeForce2 MX 400. The
kernel 2.4.2? version of this drive works well
with my video card, and I use it when
booting with that kernel.

Take a look at the file drivers/nv/nv_type.h
in the kernel source distribution and you will
see a list of chipsets from NVidia which
(I believe) is supported.

Why do you want this driver so bad?

The performance of video operations, like
scrolling. The screen really scrolls much
faster with the riva frame buffer than
with the vesa frame buffer.

I can use vesa frame bufer with my GeForce2 MX 400

I really would like to have the rivafb driver
working, but I can not. It does start at
boot time. but I cannot set the resolution to
what I would like: it always start at a low
resolution (it gives something like 25 lines x
80 columns), independently of what I set as
the video mode in the kernel command line.
Has anybody had success with the riva driver?

Do you have a RIVA card ?!
No, I do not have a RIVA card. But that is not
relevant, as the rivafb module does support
not only riva cards, but other NVidia based
cards as well, like my GeForce2 MX 400. The
kernel 2.4.2? version of this drive works well
with my video card, and I use it when
booting with that kernel.
Take a look at the file drivers/nv/nv_type.h
in the kernel source distribution and you will
see a list of chipsets from NVidia which
(I believe) is supported.
Why do you want this driver so bad?

The performance of video operations, like
scrolling. The screen really scrolls much
faster with the riva frame buffer than
with the vesa frame buffer.
