Many have a debug compile option which programs in a number of hooks which usually slow things down but produce voluminous messages. Most packages do also have runtime debug options, see the package's config file which are usually well commented, the man page, or the documentation in /usr/share/doc/packagename-version/ as for hot plug i usually find the kernel log to be the first port of call, and dmesg. I am not sure how to increase the level of logging. this may help: http://linux-hotplug.sourceforge.net/?selected=debug > > - Brad > > Jens Mayer wrote: > > >* On Thursday 03 February 2005 19:31, Bradley Serbu wrote: > > > > > > > >>Obviously thats what I ment to type. I am running Gentoo 2.6.10 dev-sources. - Brad you probably need to install a logger, i.e. # emerge syslog-ng make it start at boot # rc-update add syslog-ng default make it start now # /etc/init.d/syslog-ng start francesco -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] No /log/var/messages
Are the message details/events the same. I am specifically looking for the hotplug messages after plugging in an usb device. (Also, I'm not seeing those in everything, rather kernel/current) Also, does compiliing packages with the debug use flag increase the verbosity of the log? - Brad Jens Mayer wrote: * On Thursday 03 February 2005 19:31, Bradley Serbu wrote: Obviously thats what I ment to type. With metalog check in /var/log/everything/current You should see the error there. -- Alexandre St-Pierre [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Yea, Obviously thats what I ment to type. I did some further research and I have determened I don't have a syslog-ng deamon runnning, but I have metalog. I'm going to find and play around with those config files to see where my messages are being filtered to. This raises another question.
