James Can you boot from a linux cd ? help yourself with the following installation guide (you will *not* need to do all steps) http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-quickinstall.xml with this you can read/write on your disk. Try burning yourself a Knoppix CD, and boot directly into this. Then you can perhaps burn your critical files off to a CD, or SCP your files to another box.
