Re: [gentoo-user] gnome-games

I'm going to update first a test machine see how it acts and then if all goes well,
let the clients true a script doe a emerge of binary packages (that i create) and also
send the new config files. The only problem left is that for the portage the config
files are out of date, could this be a problem ? I don't know, time will show me.

All of this is just in a test fase and not fully inplemented.

You could try using the inject option of emerge.

Hi,

I'm trying to create an automatic emerge -U --deep -world for several clients, the one
of the problems i got is gnome-games, every emerge wants to install the games, and
because its for a company the games should not be installed.

What is the best way to keep that package from mycomputers?

TIA

Probably something like
emerge -i gnome-extra/gnome-games-3.0.0

As long as it had a higher version number that the gnome-games that
would be installed you should be good.

How are you handling config changes?

I just solved that thing by adding gnome-games to the package mask.. :)

Have you considered reading the ebuild..?

DESCRIPTION="Meta package for the GNOME desktop."
# Note to developers:
# This is a wrapper for the complete Gnome2 desktop,
# This means all components that a user expects in Gnome2 are present
# please do not reduce this list further unless
# dependencies pull in what you remove.
# With "emerge gnome" a user expects the full "standard" distribution
of Gnome and should be provided with that, consider only installing the
parts needed for smaller installations.

As I understand it, Gentoo's policy is not to pass judgment upon what
the upstream developers consider "standard" parts of their
distribution. This is a Good Thing (tm) IMHO. For every person who
whinges (bitterly, like a little girl) that the Gnome games are
included, there would be someone else who would complain were they
neglected.

Should you require other parts of Gnome without Gnome-games, I suggest
you emerge those parts separately - I think that `emerge gnome-desktop`
will pull in much of what you require.

The gnome packet is a wrapper for a complete Gnome desktop. All components
that a user can expect in a gnome desktop are listed as a dependency.

As the ebuild mentions, "consider only installing the parts needed for
smaller installations."
