Not necessarily so... It all depends how contended the ISP's border routers
are, and how much repeat content the guy views.

If you have a fast connection like cable or dsl you won't speed up your
connection but rather slow it down.

Re: [gentoo-user] Proxy server

2004-01-05 Thread Celestial Wizard
Often ISPs have a connection details / client configuration details page
which lists them.
you could always try something like proxy.isp.com or
proxy..isp.com etc... if its a national isp. try ports 80,
8080 and 3128.
where city code is associated with your airport code, ie Brisbane is
BNE, etc
You could always email / ring them :)

Also, they could be (which is quite likely) running a transparent proxy
which you will be using anyway. A way to test for this is to setup a
firewall rule on a remote network (not connected to your ISP's network)
which only allows tcp/80 connections from your end point. if you can't
connect, then you know you're running through a proxy :)

Well, I'm not sure exactly how squid would help you (it's just a web proxy:
all it'll do is mirror HTTP requests), and a SOCKS proxy is just a similar
thing for generalized *outgoing* connections.

What you probably want to look into is port forwarding with iptables or
ssh -- this'll make a port on the gateway machine forward connections to
another machine behind the firewall.

[gentoo-user] proxy

2003-11-18 Thread Redeeman
i am need of a a proxy server, because my brother is on the lan, and he
wants to make daemons, and i have all the ports :D
i dont know anything about it, and i dont have much time, so i am in
need of a secure and easy proxy server, i have heard about squid, not
much, and i see that almost any programs support socks proxy (i dont
know what it is).

can anyone recommend a small easy and secure proxy that is socks
compatible and that supports accounts made, without making system
accoutnts for any user (like with proftpd)?
thanks!!
