Did you emerge -k sys-kernel/gentoo-sources?

It should be there.

For the genkernel, you will have to emerge it to per the instructions.

Good luck. I had a problem here to in the past until I realized my stupid
mistake:)

I've followed the installation doc all the way up to Installing

(from the LiveCD) I dont have the kernel source.. I can't do
emerge since I dont have a network device (yet), so I cant get
the kernel source.. and I cant do a genkernel or anything since
 it doesnt come with stage3.

This step never mentions a stage3 install.. so what should I do?

Yes it was a stupid mistake.. I missed one very important step.
I didnt copy the distfiles and packages directories from the
liveCD to the /usr/portage directory... so I'm guessing since
it couldnt find those it was trying to get them from
the network.

Thanks,

I am told now that it will. However, in reading the man page for emerge, I
would not have guess that this was the purpose of the -e option.

They must've rewritten the man page in the last 2 or 3 months since I've
been using Gentoo. This used to be much more apparent.

So will emerge -ed world be better?

I do not know. -d is 'debug'. Are you possibly thinking of --deep ? I
thought --deep was also specified as -D, but looking at the man page this
morning I'm not seeing that. Maybe the man page needs updating? More likely
 I'm mistaken.

I often use `emerge -u world --deep`, which is more comprehensive that
`emerge -u world` but less so than `emerge -eu world`.

And does a stage 3 install have all the required source code to recompile
 everything?

If it doesn't, then Portage will download it. If previous posts have not
already answered your question, then I recently made a stage3 install. Then
once I had booted the system for the first time, I optimised my flags in
make.conf (from the examples at http://tinyurl.com/dpzi ) and then ran
`emerge -e world`. I believe this to have given me as highly optimised
system as most, without the hassle of a long install time.

HTH,

Stroller.

Adam,
I'm new too. I don't think so. I think it will only compile the
things that get updated, not everything installed on your system, and
certainly not your kernel.

I too would like to know how to do what you are suggesting.

If were to install gentoo from stage3, can I run emerge -e world to
recompile every using my optimizations and USE flags?

yes. it's always good to add the -p flag like so:

emerge -pe world.

-p means pretend, so that you get a listing of what will be
emerged. -e is the shortform of --emptytree.

No. -e will rebuild all things in world and all dependencies. You seem
to think of -u Which will only update .
