As mentioned in the kernel mail list, UDEV is going to be the supported method of dynamically creating devices under /dev. Besides, UDEV is in the portage tree. Udev is still in the development process. Because devfs is been removed from future kernels? Yes, it will be removed from future kernels, but its replacement, udev, is still in very early development.
