Re: [gentoo-user] Kazaa and winex

2003-06-10 Thread Jody
I used this link to get the new kazaa lite kpp edition running.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=51011&highlight=kazaa+kpp

You might look into lmule. It's in portage but masked. You can lookup
things by the md5 and make sure your getting the file that you want.
Unlike kazaa where some shmo renames the file, you download it and it's
crap. It's also faster just in the way it downloads chunks from several
people at the same time then puts it back together to make the file.

Kazaa Lite is a hacked version of Kazaa. But with LOTS of extra

Stuff like movie preview (divx and stuff) and data view are great
tools.
I always have it installed, in linux and windows.

Recently i install mldonkey. I think it works on fasttrak too, not
sure yet.
try that out. Its got options for ALL networks, including
bittorrent, which i think is weird. You can search for files becuase
there's no central server etc etc.
anyway it seems interesting.

i stand corrected
i did some additional digging (ie. actually going to the above link) and it
looks to be a legitimate hack of the original (interesting terminology in
that sentence). i still would prefer an Open solution when faced with an app
like this, but as far as i can tell, kazaa lite "looks" ok.

sorry 'bout all that ;-)

while it is true that kazaa light does not contain spyware, it does however
play host to a particularly nasty batch of "trojanware":

  http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1107-874885.html
  http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,98344,00.asp

if you're too busy to check the above links, here's the deal: kazaa contains
special software designed to use your spare cpu cycles (like [EMAIL PROTECTED]) to
work on an unknown project. ie. this company uses your computer's power to
research anything it feels like... from biotechnologies, to nuclear weaponry,
to a new chicken recipe. the company is responsible to no one and has cut a
deal with kazaa to quietly install itself on your machine. ...if this was
for a noble cause, i doubt they'd be so quiet about it.

it's always up to you -- go with an Open solution like the ones mentioned on
this thread, or contribute to the development of technologies a profit-driven
corporation feels like selling to whomever will pay.

I don't know if this is what you want to do, but the 0.12 version of the
giFT-cvs ebuild can connect to OpenFT, Gnutella and Kazaa
simultaneously. I find it very nifty.

There are a couple clients available for giFT, but I've found giFTcurs
to be the best for me. I've heard giFToxic also works(a gtk2 frontend).
If you want to try this:

#ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gift-cvs giFTcurs
Then as a regular user run:
$giFT-setup //There are a lot of questions, you can leave almost all of
them alone except:
-For the first question make sure to enter "1" so giFT will start
-IMPORTANT: For plugins, enter
"OpenFT:Gnutella:/usr/lib/giFT/FastTrack.so"
-make note of your completed download directory.

once you have that setup, run in a terminal:
$giFT &
$giFTcurs

and have fun. it will take a couple seconds to connect.

Good luck!
Brian

**sigh** `emerge dcgui-qt` or `emerge dc-gui`. The DirectConnect network
(http://neo-modus.com) has much more stuff available. At the time of writing
this, 23:52:16, the stats are...

Current Amount of Public Users: 131243
Current Amount of Available Data: 6270.77 TB

"Tripple the ammount of data available on Kazaa, Morpheus, and Grokster
combined!"

You make the choice. Native support on a broader network, or hug your
spyware?

I tried a few kazaa versions and had troubles with all of them..

The one I got working is 1.7.2 LITE

Get kazaa lite from http://www.kazaalite.tk/ , which is a stripped down kazaa
(no spywares).

Then go to wine hq's app db entry about it and read the comments..
