Don't see any sound module in this list.
You could try to load it manually :
# modprobe cmpci

There's no difference with having it as a module or not, I've tried it that way
already.

This is the output i have :
# lsmod
...
cmpci 25428 0 (autoclean)
soundcore 4388 2 (autoclean) [cmpci]
...

# dmesg | grep cmpci
cmpci: version $Revision: 5.64 $ time 23:33:56 Oct 2 2003
cmpci: found CM8738 adapter at io 0xa000 irq 21
cmpci: chip version = 055

Perhaps you should add this line to your /etc/modules.d/custom
alias char-major-14 cmpci

and run modules-update depmod

figure stuff out on my own if I can but I am however currently stumped with
 a TV tuner software issue.

I have a Terratec Tv+ and a cmedia 8738 based soundcard.

stop using oos and start using alsa.

I would replace xawtv with xawdecode (it reads xawtvs config file, looks
similar, but I able to switch between mono and stereo even if v4l got loaded
in XF86Config.)
