[gentoo-user] Getting to grips with S/MIME in Kmail
Hi All, I am trying to set up S/MIME in Kmail. When I select the 'S/MIME Singing Certificate' field in Kmail/Identities/Cryptography/ it fails to find my key. The error pop up says: = Key Listing Failed - Kmail An error occurred while fetching the keys from the backend: General error = I click OK and: = No backends found for listing keys. Check your installation. = I generated my key pair following the Gentoo Gnupg user guide and had no problem entering the key in 'OpenPGP Signing Key' and 'OpenPGP encruption key', under the same Kmail crypto configuration tab. Are there any additional steps I need to undertake to make Kmail work with S/MIME? Does it need different keys? S/MIME is typically used for PKI type certificates, not GnuPG certificates. You would need a DoD or Verisign (or some other publicly recognized CA) certificate to use S/MIME. [gentoo-user] firefox wheel mouse lockups
Only for a few days this machine has been locking up once in a while while reading gmail. This could be a pretty particular bug, but I thought I'd ask here if anyone recognizes any of this. -mga driver --- matrox mistique -e17 -recent xorg updates: xorg-server xorg-x11 xf86-input-mouse xf86-input-keyboard -often or always with gmail -firefox or galeon as the browser These lockups occur when scrolling, either wth the wheel or the sidebar. Often or usually or always with gmail, scrolling the folderlist. I had applied a fix of the mga drivers for this card, a very old pci card, as recommended by Hans-Werner Hilse on teh gentoo-user list in November 2005. This fix seems to take care of scrolling issues for this card, and I have had to apply it every time xf86-mga-driver is updated or recompiled, during the compilation stage. I think this unofficial fix may have finally become incompatible with something, as when I have recompiled the mga drivers without this fix, the lock up is not happening. Time for a new video card? Or can I eke another few months out of this one? Alan Davis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> to gentoo-user More options 11/20/05 -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

[gentoo-user] kalarm still broken -- revdep-rebuild fails; need mass unmerge of old KDE things
Revdep-rebuild seems to be the poor stepchild of the portage system. There'sprobably a good reason for it, but it sure is annoying. Moreover, my pastexperiences with it were that it was never entirely happy and I always had to leave my system in a state I considered unsatisfactory. This time it's kalarm causing me to try it. Kalarm apparently had a disagreementwith kdepim about who would be emerged, resulting in 200-some error dialogs greeting me each morning. So I unmerged them both and emerged only kalarm, and thought things were fixed. But sure enough, this morning there were 215such crash dialogs complaining about SIGFPE. I have no clue why the first one didn't just kill off kalarm, but that's a different issue. The bright side is thataside from issuing all these dialogs, kalarm seems to be functioning. How odd.Anyway, in pursuit of getting it cleaned up, I tried revdep-rebuild, which can catch some of those odd dependency thingies. It reported a bunch of problems with KDE itself. Mostly with old versions,so I'd like to unmerge them. But I'm a bit unsure how to do that. Do I have tounmerge the component packages one by one, or is there some way to name all of the components of KDE 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4 with one or three collectivenames?Even if I do this, there remain some current complaints from revdep-rebuild: broken /usr/kde/3.5/lib/kde3/libkaddrbk_geo_xxport.so (requires libkabinterfaces.so.1) broken /usr/kde/3.5/lib/kde3/libkaddrbk_gmx_xxport.so (requires libkabinterfaces.so.1)Plus some relating to openoffice-bin (I'm going to see if switching to plain openoffice helps)and one relating to perl that stumps me because it comes from the imagemagick package itself, and so presumably should know what version of its own libraries to use: broken /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.7/i686-linux/auto/Image/Magick/Magick.so (requires libMagick.so.6)I guess I'll re-emerge imagemagick and see if it helps. Thanks both to you and to jure for your replies to this question. env-update doesn't put it right. However I do have an /etc/ld.so.conf with all the right directories in it. The correct procedure is to re-merge the package whose binary is doing the complaining, rather than the one whose library is being complained about. A nonexistent libMagick.so.6 isn't a problem that will be solved by re-merging imagemagick; the solution is to re-merge perl, which will update its link to your newer version of imagemagick. I don't know what KDE package the KDE libs up there belong to; try running them through 'equery belongs', and re-merging the relevant package. When doing simple replacement merges like this, it's useful to use the --oneshot or -1 option to emerge so that you don't get extra stuff dumped into world, such as a KDE lib that's normally only a dependency. This whole area seems a lot less automated than most of the portage stuff. I know gentoo is a DIY type distribution, but this proceedure looks to me like a magnet for operator error (not to mention confusion) and could use some attention. Unfortunately, your system doesn't seem to have been getting the proper maintenance it needs in terms of keeping dynamic linking up to date and cleaning out older versions of stuff. In such a case - yes, it does take a bit of work to get things running smoothly. Revdep-rebuild is a fairly good program considering what it's being asked to do, but it isn't perfect - sometimes you just have to do a bit of digging to find out what's broken. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

If you have multiple architectures, the packages release at different times and sometimes different revs. For this http-replicator is a better choice. For example - I run x86, amd64, and power pc. Thus, need a broader spectrum of packages. Or if you run desktops and servers (different sets of software) and don't have a common set of USE flags - use say, lighttpd, php, and mysql on the server but not on the desktop. Or more likely, use postfix, sasl, tinydns, and procmail on the server, but not the desktop (assumes the desktop uses LDAP or POP). Then http-replicator would be a better choice. Re: [gentoo-user] An alternative to http-replicator
Used to do that - heaps of problems when using multiple machines and multiple users. http-replicator insulates you from that. It also allows you to remove nfs if you dont need it for anything else - also simplifies and makes the system (all machines) more reliable. nfs is ok in its place, but it is certainly not secure or trouble free! NFS requires building NFS server support on the server (reboot required) and NFS client support on the client(s) plus setting up lines in the associated config files. It also requires enabling and running portmapper on port 111 (the linux version of Windows' port 139) on the server and punching a few holes in iptables. For details see... http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Share_Directories_via_NFS In terms of programs to configure and run, it's a wash. But I'll pick http security (especially boa) over portmap/nfs security any day. rsync and nfs both work for "emerge --sync" because we know that those files are supposed to be *ABSOLUTELY* identical for all machines at any given time. Unless your server has *EVERY PACKAGE THAT EVERY CLIENT NEEDS*, you run into a problem when emerging packages. If a required tarball isn't present, emerge downloads the missing file (tarball, etc) to the distfiles directory. But, but, but... the clients' distfiles directories are nfs mounts on the server. That implies that *THE CLIENTS WILL NEED WRITE PERMISSION ON THE SERVER* My approach is to make *LOCAL* copies on the client from mirrors. The local server just happens to be the first mirror on the list. If it doesn't have a required file, no problem, check the next mirror in the list. The clients never have to write on the local server. -- Walter Dnes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> In linux /sbin/init is Job #1 My musings on technology and security at http://tech_sec.blog.ca -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-user] Are there any known glitches in using the nvidia drivers with an athlon64?
Are there any known glitches in using the nvidia drivers with an athlon64? I have a mythtv box that I have finally dumped the old hardware due to a flakey cpu - new MB, RAM and CPU (3200+), but the original nvidia FX5200 which was working nicely. Ive partially rebuilt all the packages using the athlon64 arch, but I am finding that starting X does not work - end up with a shut down monitor (overranged?) - if I exit back to a console (takes awhile) its pink! It returns to normal after a reboot. Only I run a full Gentoo mirror because I need multiple architectures - x86, amd64, ia64, mips. Also, there are multiple users, and it's necessary to insure the LiveCDs and snapshots get transfered automatically. At home, http-replicator work fine for the small set of systems. No NFS required for either setup. Bob - -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Not here. 100baseT network is quite performant. If you've got a 1000baseT, it can actually outperform a local harddrive. Apologies if this is silly, but google didn't do it for me. I've recently updated a lot of things, and am doing emerge -u world right now.. but from my user account, I lost the ability to get back to a tty. seems really odd and there aren't any kde key bindings in my way (that I know of). I'm probably being a hypocrite, just because I don't know how to break/change the thread-ID in Thunderbird without creating an entirely new mail. But, it's not proper "net-iquette" to reply to someone else's message with a /completely/ new topic without creating a new thread. That being said, if you're saying what I think you're saying, I haven't been able to switch terminals as you suggest once X and a window manager (like KDE or Gnome) is up and running. Don't know if it's because of X, or KDE, or GDM, or whatever. But, you're not alone. ;-) It's not a problem for me, I usually have about 5-10 different terminal sessions going at any given time, they just happen to be managed by KDE. I manually start gdm when I want to go into a GUI session, and everything works fine as far as CTRL+ALT+F[123456789] before I start the X session. - -- gentux echo "hfouvyyAhnbjm/dpn" | perl -pe 's/(.)/chr(ord($1)-1)/ge' gentux's gpg fingerprint ==> 5495 0388 67FF 0B89 1239 D840 4CF0 39E2 18D3 4A9E -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.3 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFEi7UPTPA54hjTSp4RAoNgAJ9FsrCRZO9pUKc98D1690S3rc79BgCfarn9 lDQeQUubJDkW5dvDdNkHKWI= =0Zw6 -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
