The ebuild could offer it as flag. > Can anyone please suggest a mindmap application on gentoo that doesn't > rely on the same enterprise technology my bank is using? There are more funny deps on this tree. With Xpp2, Xpp3, DOM4J, StAX, JDOM and XOM I can see 6 different packages for XML parsing ;-) I think it is hard for the Java ebuild maintainers to recognize which dependency is really required for a package and which trigger optionally supported features. - Jörg

[gentoo-user] Setting up two monitors
Hi All, I am trying to set up two monitors, but have next to no experience on the subject. Last time I set up two monitors on a machine was years ago and I recall using xinerama and xorg.conf. Now I do not use xorg.conf and I'm still running x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.7-r1 Upon booting up this machine showed both monitors with the same resolution and cloning each other. $ xrandr -q Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1920 x 1920 VGA-0 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 359mm x 287mm 1280x1024 75.0*+ 60.0 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0 832x62474.6 800x60085.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x48085.0 75.0 72.8 66.7 59.9 720x40070.1 DVI-0 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 509mm x 286mm 1920x1080 60.0 + 1280x1024 75.0 60.0* 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.0 60.0 800x60075.0 60.3 640x48075.0 59.9 720x40070.1 To change the new larger monitor connected on the DVI port, I ran: $ xrandr --output DVI-0 --auto and that gave me: $ xrandr -q Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1920 VGA-0 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 359mm x 287mm 1280x1024 75.0*+ 60.0 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0 832x62474.6 800x60085.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x48085.0 75.0 72.8 66.7 59.9 720x40070.1 DVI-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 509mm x 286mm 1920x1080 60.0*+ 1280x1024 75.0 60.0 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.0 60.0 800x60075.0 60.3 640x48075.0 59.9 720x40070.1 Is there some invocation to allow me to set this up like MSWindows does? I mean, in WinXP all desktop icons and toolbar stays at the bottom of the DVI monitor. The VGA monitor on the left just shows the desktop background, but has no toolbar or desktop icons. The user can however drag application windows from the DVI monitor to the VGA monitor, seamlessly between the two. On this machine I can't - they are just clones of each other ... -- Regards, Mick

[gentoo-user] ldap client authentication
Folks, I'm attempting to set up LDAP authentication against my OpenDS server on a Gentoo box. I've been struggling with this for several days now with no progress. Here's the rundown of how things are configured (fairly straight forward): - OpenDS server has the following entry (gathered directly from ldapsearch output), below. Note that clearly the LDAP server is properly configured if it's responding to an ldapsearch on the client with no problems. ldap ~ # ldapsearch -H ldap://auth.whatever.com "objectclass=posixAccount" dn: cn=tb,ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com uid: tb initials: tb objectClass: person objectClass: inetOrgPerson objectClass: organizationalPerson objectClass: posixAccount objectClass: top givenName: Thomas cn: tb sn: Bellview telephoneNumber: 333.555. homeDirectory: /home/tb uidNumber: 10001 mail: t...@whatever.com gidNumber: 10001 - /etc/ldap.conf base ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com uri ldaps://auth.whatever.com ldap_version 3 tls_reqcert allow pam_password exop pam_filter objectclass=posixAccount pam_login_attribute uid pam_member_attribute memberUid nss_base_passwd ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com nss_base_shadow ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com nss_initgroups_ignoreusers avahi,avahi-autoipd,backup,bin,couchdb,daemon,games,gdm,gnats,hplip,irc,kernoops,libuuid,list,lp,mail,man,messagebus,news,proxy,pulse,root,rtkit,saned,speech-dispatcher,sshd,sync,sys,syslog,usbmux,uucp,www-data timelimit 5 bind_timelimit 5 - Likewise, /etc/openldap/ldap.conf BASE ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com URI ldaps://auth.whatever.com TLS_REQCERT allow #SIZELIMIT 12 #TIMELIMIT 15 #DEREF never Simple problem: authentication fails. On the CLIENT I see the following in the log files: ==> auth.log <== Nov 3 06:26:03 s_dg...@client.whatever.com sshd[2650]: error: PAM: Authentication failure for tb from blah.whatever.com On the SERVER I see the following: [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] CONNECT conn=314 from=10.1.1.166:44879 to= 10.1.1.115:389 protocol=LDAP [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] BIND REQ conn=314 op=0 msgID=1 type=SIMPLE dn="" [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] BIND RES conn=314 op=0 msgID=1 result=0 authDN="" etime=0 [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] SEARCH REQ conn=314 op=1 msgID=2 base="ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com" scope=wholeSubtree filter="(&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=tb))" attrs="uid,userPassword,uidNumber,gidNumber,cn,homeDirectory,loginShell,gecos,description,objectClass" [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] SEARCH RES conn=314 op=1 msgID=2 result=0 nentries=1 etime=1 [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] SEARCH REQ conn=314 op=2 msgID=3 base="ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com" scope=wholeSubtree filter="(&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=tb))" attrs="uid,userPassword,uidNumber,gidNumber,cn,homeDirectory,loginShell,gecos,description,objectClass" [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] SEARCH RES conn=314 op=2 msgID=3 result=0 nentries=1 etime=1 [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] CONNECT conn=315 from=10.1.1.166:44879 to= 10.1.1.115:389 protocol=LDAP [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] BIND REQ conn=315 op=0 msgID=1 type=SIMPLE dn="" [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] BIND RES conn=315 op=0 msgID=1 result=0 authDN="" etime=0 [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] SEARCH REQ conn=315 op=1 msgID=2 base="ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com" scope=wholeSubtree filter="(&(objectclass=posixAccount)(uid=tb))" attrs="ALL" [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] SEARCH RES conn=315 op=1 msgID=2 result=0 nentries=1 etime=0 [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] BIND REQ conn=315 op=2 msgID=3 type=SIMPLE dn="" [03/Nov/2010:06:27:05 -0400] BIND RES conn=315 op=2 msgID=3 result=0 authDN="" etime=0 [03/Nov/2010:06:27:07 -0400] DISCONNECT conn=315 reason="Client Disconnect" [03/Nov/2010:06:27:07 -0400] DISCONNECT conn=314 reason="Client Disconnect" [03/Nov/2010:06:27:07 -0400] DISCONNECT conn=309 reason="Client Disconnect" Looks fine, right? Well not really. If I run an ldapsearch *exactly* as it appears in the SERVER's log, it returns the user. ldap ~ # ldapsearch -H ldap://auth.whatever.com -b "ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com" "(&(objectclass=posixAccount)(uid=tb))" # extended LDIF # # LDAPv3 # base with scope subtree # filter: (&(objectclass=posixAccount)(uid=tb)) # requesting: ALL # # tb, it, whatever.com dn: cn=tb,ou=it,dc=whatever,dc=com uid: tb initials: tb objectClass: person objectClass: inetOrgPerson objectClass: organizationalPerson objectClass: posixAccount objectClass: top givenName: Thomas cn: tb sn: Bellview telephoneNumber: 333.555. homeDirectory: /home/tb uidNumber: 10001 mail: t...@whatever.com gidNumber: 10001 # search result search: 2 result: 0 Success # numResponses: 2 # numEntries: 1 This has me pulling my hairs out. Clearly the manual ldapsearch works. The only thing I can think of is the "scope=wholeSubtree" or the "attrs=ALL" breaking the query; clearly the applied filters work without any issues. Thoughts / ideas would be greatly appreciated. -james

[gentoo-user] eMerge gone commercial?
Hello, Curiously, I just got this information, from a vendor: eMerge is a configurable, integrated security management and access control system that can be managed from anywhere there is a network connection and access to a standard Internet browser. It is based on the industry-standard Linux operating system and requires no server or client software to be installed because it is a browser based and managed platform. This ensures there are no software compatibility issues with existing network equipment and computers. Sounds familiar to our emerge and (gentoo) Linux? [gentoo-user] Setup for two graphical logins on one machine
Hi everybody, I've got a somewhat exotic wish: I want to have two graphical logins on my box. Currently I'm using /etc/init.d/xdm to start slim which in turn starts an XFce session after login. All of this happens on vt7 (reachable via ctrl-alt-f7). Now I wish for a second graphical login on vt8. I can get a second graphical desktop by running 'startx -- :1' in a root shell, but this looses all advantages of management through init-scripts. What I currently hope for is a way to tell /etc/init.d/xdm to start two instances of slim, one on vt7 and one on vt8. Bonus points if the second instance of slim starts a fluxbox session instead of an XFce session upon login. Do you think this is possible?
