Are you using distcc? I had problems emerging kioslaves a couple of
weeks ago too.

My issues went away when I commented out FEATURES=distcc
from /etc/make.conf and cranked MAKEOPTS down to -j1.

 Hi there.
My new laptop (Toshiba A70) is seriously weirding me out.
It seems to be turning off (randomly?) while in KDE.

Could it be simply that the processor is overheating and shutting down
to protect itself?

My Dell laptop used to do the same thing 6 months after I bought it. I
took a can of compressed air to the vents and a pile of dust shot out.
Now it works fine!

Maybe install a CPU monitoring tool (e.g. gkrellm2) and keep an eye on
the temperature?

Cheers,
Phillip

Hmm. AFAIK, a Pentium 4 processor should have that capability.

My gkrellm2 has a checkbox to display the temperature under
Configuration Builtins Sensors Setup Temperatures.

Otherwise, you can manually get a reading by doing:
# cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature

If that doesn't work, you might need to check that ACPI is enabled in
your kernel (particularly the Thermal zone option). This link might
