Hi all,

I solved the problem by myself.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log gives me the reason and the solution:

(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/share/fonts/misc/".
Entry deleted from font path.
(Run 'mkfontdir' on "/usr/share/fonts/misc/").

So I run mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/misc
and made a restart and the problem was solved ;-)

best regards
Christoph

[gentoo-user] Font problem

2009-05-12 Thread Christoph Schrauth
Hi all,

I get the following error when starting Eterm:

Eterm: Error: Unable to load font
"-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-*-*-*-c-*-iso10646-1". Falling back on
"k14"
Eterm: FATAL: Couldn't load the fallback font either. Giving up.

and the follwoing warning when starting xterm:

Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct
xterm: cannot load font
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1

Has someone any idea to fix this problem?

Thanks,
Christoph

Re: [gentoo-user] font problem after xorg-server upgrade

2007-05-03 Thread Pongracz Istvan
Hi,

I spent some time to solve this kind of issue, but no results.

In the GDM I got at least 400px high characters instead of 12 :)

Using Beryl all windows do not refresh their contents, just a snapshot
visible in the window area.
If I resize the window, I got a new snapshot, but (ab)normally refresh
are never happens: windows, popups, menus etc.

I have this kind of graphics card in my fujitsu siemens amilo pi1505
laptop:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile
945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

With metacity seems everything working well, I have no font issues
(except GDM login page).

In xorg.conf the DisplaySize ignored.

Does anybody have any positive results with the new xorg-server/i810
driver?

Regards,
István

I did not mean tweaking when I said I have no time to experiment. I want
to locate the problem as closely as possible to provide valid bugreport
so developers can fix it in the next release.

I had this kind of problem.
I only had this problem with GDM: huge fonts (some thousands of
pixels :)
Other problems caused was beryl+firefox and other application crashes,
cannot change its window etc.

I downgraded to 1.2.x

My personal opinion is that is not a solution if I had to tweak all the
system to get it working.

I've had my share of font related problems and most of them were related
to changes to the DPI. You might find yourself in the same situation.

Drivers sometimes make an educated guess to set the DPI. If the driver or
X server changes the algorithm, the DPI changes and so does the appearance
of fonts. You can avoid this by setting the DPI[1] manually.

For other font related tips you can have a look at the gentoo wiki[2]

No, I had even worse one - I have 2-headed intel card (internal laptop
LCD + external one) and use them as separate screens (:1.0 and :1.1).
After the upgrade, it seqfaults, I want to post a bug against it as soon
as I have a bit of time. Now I'm back at the old one and have no time to
spare too, so this one waits.

However, for what I heard of this version, it is somewhat more buggy
than I like.

I would suggest you to post a bug as soon as you can.

Have a nice day

[gentoo-user] font problem after xorg-server upgrade

2007-04-25 Thread Matthew R. Lee
Yesterday after a normal emerge -uND world and reboot the fonts in X went
haywire. They all jumped in size to, I'm guessing, 100pt or more making KDE
completely unusable. After rebooting into the console and some investigation
I discovered that if I downgraded to xorg-server 1.2.0-r3 (from 1.3.0.0) and
xf86-video-i810 1.7.4 (from 2.0.0) the problem went away. No config was
changed during the emerge (except hdparm).
Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need to file a bug? I'm snowed under
with work this week so I don't have time to experiment.
