Seems useful.

 

I think enabling them separately could be useful. The use case is about change 
– knowing when it was created seems less useful than knowing when it was 
modified.

 

I’m also unclear on whether this would reflect changes in style definitions as 
an effective change to the layer(s) using that definition. I assume not, 
although that might be a useful thing to know: when the layer is conceptually 
changed.

This is similar to the setting for an individual layer eh? Just want to
ensure the idea is presented in the UI consistently across layers and layer
groups.

For your two options, why not just added to PublishedInfo? That is why the
class was introduced to provide a home for things common to Layer and
LayerGroup...

I would like to make sure that settings that just affect the web
administration application (and are not functional) are not mixed
together...
So I do not mind the idea, just placing it along side functional settings
like *REST PathMapper Root directory path*.

The other non-functional setting we have is a limit of features shown in
the layer preview, perhaps these can start to be collected under a single
heading?

I am kind of neutral on the created/modified information, I suspect that
once you start down this road there are other columns it would be desirable
to turn on and off.

Q: Why not use the file timestamps for the default implementation?

 Geoserver is using a version of Xstream that has known vulnerabilities, not sure if this makes GeoServer vulnerable or not, but upgrading is easy enough. CVE-2013-7285  Xstream API versions up to 1.4.6 and version 1.4.10, if the security framework has not been initialized, may allow a remote attacker to run arbitrary shell commands by manipulating the processed input stream when unmarshaling XML or any supported format. e.g. JSON. CVE-2019-10173  It was found that xstream API version 1.4.10 before 1.4.11 introduced a regression for a previous deserialization flaw. If the security framework has not been initialized, it may allow a remote attacker to run arbitrary shell commands when unmarshalling XML or any supported format. e.g. JSON.
