Re: Easy to read climate book?

2006-04-07 Thread Radoslav Dimitrov

Dear Henrik and company

I recommend the brand new book from Cambridge, by Andrew E. Dessler
and Edward A. Parson, The Science and Politics of Global Climate
Change: A Guide to the Debate (CUP 2006).
It provides a lucid and comprehensive summary of the state of
knowledge on all aspects of climate change. The authors write We
seek to help the concerned, non-expert citizen to understand what is
known about climate change Indeed the book is accessible to a
wider audience so it should serve your purpose, Henrik. At the same
time, it is useful also to more informed academics, especially to
those of us who think we know :) The only thing about the book that
does not meet your requirements: no photos, just charts and tables.

Cheers,

There are a lot to choose from nowadays. I would suggest Elizabeth
Kolbert's recent book, Field Notes from a Catastrophe. Artful writing,
faithful to the science, compelling argument.

Not sure whether Gary Braasch has ever put all of his wonderful
photography into a coffee table book on global warming, but you can
ask him.

By the way, Oxford University Press produces a Very Short Introduction
series. They also have a pocket-sized one on global warming. I just got
it from the author, Mark Maslin, in London. It's not in color and only
has a couple of b/w photographs. But it is pretty good. A bit British in
perspective (e.g., the emergence of climate change in the press in the
late 1980s is discussed from the British perspective, does not reflect
what happened in the US), but amazingly concise and to the point.

Best,

Susi

While it is not a coffee table book, Chris Spence's Global Warming:
Personal Solutions for a Healthy Planet Palgrave: 2005, provides a
user-friendly guide to what climate change is, how it affects you and
what you can do about it. It is written in a more journalistic than
academic style and is very readable -- no great photos though.
