Re: Schools offering joint environmental science/policy degree -- Is anyone compiling this? YES!

2009-02-02 Thread Kate O'Neill
Let me add ours to the list: the Department of Environmental Science,
Policy and Management - we're not exactly an MS program, however (our
MS is basically the first two years of PhD work, which is very
different from the needs and expectations of a lot of students
wanting to do an environmental science/policy degree; but it works as
a joint degree with something else, and can be a fall-back option for
a student who decides they want out of the PhD track). It's a pretty
good PhD program, however!

 See: http://espm.berkeley.edu/gradprograms/index.php

So, of the 30-40 students we admit each year, all but a handful are
on the PhD track. Some take our professional MS programs in range
management and forestry. But I believe this is an unusually high
proportion compared to Yale's School of Forestry & Natural Resources,
or Duke's Nicholas School (Ben or Erika may correct me here).

To address Raul's question briefly (and speaking as someone with a
political science degree who was hired into this interdisciplinary
program): actually, I think such PhDs are very highly valued, but not
always in the expected places. Though placing a student in a
straightforward disciplinary department requires a lot more advance
planning, at least in the social sciences; from taking the right
courses, to having members of poli sci, geography or sociology depts
on committees, to attending the right conferences and publishing in
the right journals, we can do it. But actually, there are many more
academic jobs out there now that do want someone with
interdisciplinary training, and value that component more than, say,
a trad IR department. Also, we have a good track record of preparing
students for, and placing them in, non-academic jobs, which, given
the state of the market right now, is a very good thing; again, as
interdisciplinary departments tend to have more of an emphasis on
applied research, there is perhaps more of a fit with the non-
academic world. Of course, I'm making generalizations, but if
someone's life goal is a tenured position in an Ivy League poli sci
department, I'd advise them to get a political science degree.
Otherwise, I'd suggest going for what you're interested in, and
planning for a variety of contingencies. I, by the way, had zero
success in even getting an interview ten years ago wtih a political
science dept unless the job was specifically for Global Environmental
Politics, even with a poli sci degree from a pretty decent
university. And I wouldn't have gotten this job without an
interdisciplinary-type post doc.

But this is all part of a larger debate...

actually value holders of interdisciplinary PhDs?

I have the feeling (as the holder of one of such interdisciplinary
PhDs) that while many universities, schools and departments market
themselves as valuing and embracing interdisciplinarity, if it came
down to it, most political science departments would want to hire
someone with a PhD in political science (just giving an example of
one of the myriad of disciplines in the social sciences) instead of
someone with an interdisciplinary degree, even if the teaching and
research agendas involved interdisciplinary work.

various programs of Wageningen University. Given her interest, I
especially recommend the MSc Environmental Sciences, which has a
specialization in Environmental Policy (www.mes.wur.nl). Since this
program gives a lot of freedom for students to chose their own courses
she can develop her own program in which she combines environmental
sciences with courses in environmental policy (see www.enp.wur.nl for a
list of environmental policy courses she can choose from). If she is
interested, she can contact me directly for more information.

Hi Ken.
The International Environmental Policy Program (IEP) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies combines a strong science core, especially in conservation biology, with economics and energy modeling in the service of policy design and implementation. Your student can check it out on

Northern Arizona University's Center for Sustainable Environments offers an MS in Environmental Sciences and Policy.  There's a great balance between the environmental sciences and political applications.  There are also  opportunities for external financial support -- both the Doris Duke and Wyss foundations fund grad students in the program.

Here at Columbia there are two masters programs that accomplish this.

MPA in Environmental Science and Policy
(http://www.columbia.edu/cu/mpaenvironment/pages/news_prof5.html).

MA in Climate and Society
(http://www.columbia.edu/cu/climatesociety/research.html).

Both are 12-month programs.
