Hi Jim, As you've rightly spotted, the only version of this is called
open. Normally get_iplayer would pick this up and use it as default
but it seems not to in this case. Adding --versions=open to your
get_iplayer command should work for you.

OK, thanks to Howard and yourself for the help.

I used --playlist-metadata at lunchtime and gip duly fetched me the
flashhd1 of Peter Grimes OK.[1] But I was about to say I was puzzled by why
this particular programme requires the special treatment, and then ask what
I can do to routinely overcome it.

I'll add the --versions=open to my default command string unless someone
points out a drawback when the file fetch doesn't need it.

Cheers,

Jim

[1] All I can dream of now is an HD version of Britten conducting the War
Requiem. That'd be great. Realise it's a fantasy, though. But maybe they'll
repeat the Billy Budd which was broadcast before I started using gip! :-)

That was a broadcast of the Glyndebourne production wasn't it? There's a
DVD available in Glyndebourne's online shop if that's any help.

Don't use --versions=open as a default command as a lot of programmes won't
have an open version to fetch so the download will fail. If you do have this
problem again, the best thing to do is run --info on the programme and that
will then tell you what is available. You can then tell gip what to download.
There are a number of possible versions you might find available like original,
open, iPlayer, shortened, lengthened, and there's more so it's impossible to
guess what will be available when a programme fails. Gip usually takes the
longest version it finds available to use as the default download option and it
normally does this automatically without any extra commands.

Yes. Thanks. However I must admit my interest in commercial DVD for
classical music dwindled when the lazy media companies largely stopped
releasing 'pal' sic format and adopted a single-format blanket 'ntsc'
sic again approach, reducing even more the resolution. Crazy situation
when even *European* concerts and operas became available only as 'ntsc'
when they'd been broadcast initially as 'pal'. In some cases I watched the
'pal' versions evaporate from catalogues as the companies ceased to
re-press copies because they didn't want the bother of 'double inventory'.
So I tended to get out of the habit, but I'll have a look.

FWIW I captured the HDTV broadcast from DVB-T2, but missed the first few
mins. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a repeat. That'd also be useful
as a DVB-T2 vs iplayer comparison.

BTW The Peter Grimes has 'enforced' subtitiles so I wonder if this was what
prompted the need for the metadata switch. I've not checked the file
details, but also am wondering if I can switch off the subtitles.

The download problem is linked to this issue
https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/issues/157 which has now been fixed
for the next release of GiP. The subtitles are recorded into the video so
cannot be removed.
