Just make a rectangular selection of the portion you would crop -
fixing the size/aspect ratio int he tool options and holding shift.
Then, click on the crop,select a random area, and click on the "from

[Gimp-user] Writing gimp perl batch script

2003-07-30 Thread Michael Dingwall
Hi,

I've been working on getting a perl batch script written for gimp that will
take the contents of a directory, pull out all of the pictures of a certain
type and run some type of filter on them. So far everything works ok, until I
try to loop the execution. here is the part that I'm having problems with:

for my $filename (@filelist) {
$img = gimp_image_load($filename,$filename);
$drw = gimp_image_active_drawable($img);
plug_in_edge(1,$drw,8.7,2);
gimp_image_save(1,$drw,$filename,$filename);
$img->delete;
}

This is the basic operations that I'm doing. For some reason on the second
run of the loop, I start getting warnings like:

Subroutine Gimp::gimp_file_load redefined at /(path to Gimp.pm/Gimp.pm on line
541

The exectution will finish and the everything will come out as expected,
however these warnings keep showing up. I've tried the trace mechanism and it
crashes after the gimp_image_load statement.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Michael

Oh - and if you'd like to get your idea about cropping limited by
aspect ratio considered at some future date for inclusion, you should
open a report for it in bugzilla (http://bugzilla.gnome.org - click on
"Create a bugzilla account", follow the instructions, and then click on
"Enter a new bug"). Otherwise, it is likely to get forgotten again...
sorry :)

Cheers,
Dave.

There is no further dialog - there is a tool options dialog
however which opens when you double click on the tool in the
toolbox. The rect select tool is the dotted rectangle - the tool
which is selected by default at startup. Double click on it, and
a dialog opens up (in 1.2) In 1.3, this dialog is active by
default, and docked in the main toolbox window.

Dave.

[Gimp-user] creating a knib that's broken at an angle.

2003-07-30 Thread Alok Kumar
Hi all,
I need to create a brush which is broken. That is,
the brush should be like a fountain pen knib, only broken at an angle
of 30 degrees.
A bit like this.

 /\
 / \

 If this is a regular knib, what I need is

cut from the middle of / _ /\<___ cut from bottom of /
 / \

So, when one writes with the brush, say a vertical line, it would not
show up like this:

But like this:

| | |

|

I hope you get the idea. If not, I'll try to explain it again.

Actually, I may have been wrong in my previous reply about this. That
error may have occurred on gimp startup without my being aware of it.

Therefore its not clear to me whether it had any connection with the
fact that rectselect was a do-nothing. (It did not take me into any
further dialog to do with entering an aspect ratio).

[Gimp-user] Grokking

2003-07-30 Thread BandiPat
Gimp gurus,

I am curious as to how close the old "Grokking the GIMP" tutorial/manual
is in working with the new 1.3.x version. I realize many things have
changed since that was written, but really shouldn't be too much of a
problem to adjust some of the instructions? At least I don't think it
would. That's why I am asking you gurus that have done the manual
before.

Also, will there be a new one for the 2.0 version soon to be released or
will there be or is there now a manual or tutorial for the new one yet?
I haven't done much with the Gimp earlier, but become more interested
as the 2.0 nears completetion. The 1.3.17 looks very nice and is
performing very well, so I think it may be time to get into a tutorial
of some sort to learn more.

Thanks,
Patrick

I get the error when, with an image opened in gimp, I click tools, select,
rectselect. Nothing happens in the image window but the error appears in my
terminal window at that moment. I can continue in gimp doing other operations with
the image. Only when I quit gimp do I actually see the error message(s). To my
knowledge I was not attempting to save the image as a text file or do any kind
of save. My image file is a JPEG and for my purposes of cropping, resizing etc
I dont make use of layers. I am happy to use my gimp as it is unless other signs of
flakiness turn up. However I would love to know if my suggestion re cropping
has a chance of being realized in a later release.

Thats because AIUI, the tilde is a universal symbol representing the
*users* home dir, as in if I was logged in as gene, then it would be
string subbed by /home/gene when encountered in a script. So ~/foo
would be /home/gene/foo in that case.

What about using --prefix=/home/username/foo instead of relying on
shell substition where you can't rely on it?

[Gimp-user] Trouble with configure option --prefix

2003-07-30 Thread Christoph Haller
I've compiled gimp-1.2.5 with success using the configure option
--prefix=$HOME/foo
However, when I try to start I face a rather bizarre message
For a proper GIMP installation, a subdiretcory named
$HOME/~/foo needs to be created.

This appeared wrong to me, but out of curiosity I did the favor
and created a directory called ~ (tilde) in $HOME.
GIMP started, but as I expected complained about a missing directory
$HOME/$HOME/foo

The other way around, creating a $HOME/$HOME/foo
in the first place, doesn't work either.

I'm afraid I'm stuck in a vicious circle.
Does anybody know, where my initial mistake may be.

I don't know what you're doing - is this when the gimp is
starting up that you get this? In which case, either install
libaa (ASCII art) or remove the plug-in. It's an optional plug-in
which requires a 3rd party library - if you don't have it it's
not dramatic. It just means that you can't save your images as
text files...

Anyway, that shouldn't stop the gimp from operating. Does it do
so?

Re: [Gimp-user] cropping to pre-set aspect ratio

2003-07-30 Thread Bertie Coopersmith

I attempted David Neary's workaround which was to first use the rectselect tool
specifying the required aspect ratio. Unfortunately I cannot do this and I think my
gimp is a bit broken. This is what I get:-
---
/usr/lib/gimp/1.2/plug-ins/aa: error while loading shared libraries:
libaa.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

LibGimp-WARNING **: gimp: wire_read: unexpected EOF

Lets forget that. I must oneday download & recompile the latest reliable gimp.
What I am quite bucked about is that the developers seem to think that my suggestion,
(i.e. being able to set aspect in the cropping tool) is worth implementing.
Go to it guys!
