It might shock you, but it's completey legal, at least in most jurisdictions.

The (GPL) license puts some requirements on distribution, but you don't
have to mention the terms in the advertising for it, nor must it be
distributed for free.

free refers to the terms that source code is distributed at no extra
charge and with full modification rights, not to the actual price.

(see the GPL FAQ at http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html for more info)

It is possible that those two fail to fulfill the licensing requirements,
but to know that you must buy the software and check.

Hi,

steve hudson wrote:
i think you'll find somewhere in GPL you cant distribute it under another
name and have no reference to GPL on the site

You're getting copyright (the licence) and trademarks (the name)
mixed up.

There is nothing preventing me from releasing what's in GIMP CVS
as Dave's Paint Program. I must release it under the GPL. That
means, I must include a file with the GPL in the package I sell
you. You can then request the source code, which I must provide
to you, charging no more than the cost of the media it comes on.

and if this is the way GPL works you need to seriously rethink it

It's been pretty well thought out before.

Cheers,
Dave.

whenever this has happened before, the suggestion was always to tell
ebay about it. ebay actually has more to work with to prevent this from
happening than the gpl does.

http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/contact_inline/index.html might be the
place to start.

[Gimp-user] Re: Is delivered mail (carefull!)

2005-02-12 Thread Andy
Hi

It seems that you have been infected by some kind of virus and that virus is
sending messages to this list in the hopes of infecting other ones.

Luckiliy for us, most GIMP users are using some kind of 'nix distribution and
cannot be infected by this virus which is w32/[EMAIL PROTECTED] according to
the
AVERT Labs virus email analyzer.

But since I heard about ports of the GIMP to windows I hereby advice ALL
WINDOWS USERS DO NOT OPEN THE MESSAGE Re: Is delivered mail instead DELETE
IT (if you are using outlook, disable the preview pane before trying to
delete the message and also delete the message from the trashcan)

With kind regards

Andy

Ok you're right but it doesn't matter. The most important part of the message
is the warning for others since everyone subscribed on this list will have
gotten the message with the infected exe file in it.

Well It seems that even Andy sometimes makes a mistake ...

The advice should therefore read

I hereby advice ALL WINDOWS USERS DO NOT OPEN THE MESSAGE Is delivered mail
instead DELETE IT (if you are using outlook, disable the preview pane before
trying to delete the message and also delete the message from the
 trashcan)

The difference is subtle but big

Andy,
Would you happen to have the original email? I don't believe that I
have any viruses on my system; I'm running Thunderbird, Firefox, and the
version of Symantec without the vulnerabilities that have just been
reported. However, I'd like to see the headers on that email; while
it's easy to forge them, there is always the possibility that I do have
a virus and need to do something about it.

Thanks,

[Gimp-user] Programme won't start

2005-02-12 Thread dave.smith
I've just upgraded to the latest version of GIMP and everything seems to
go OK. When I opened up the programme the first time it was clearly
opening up the new version and asked if I want to upgrade or re-install.

I chose upgrade (well, I had a choice of two things and had to pick
one!) and now when I click to open up the programme it starts but does
not complete. It then just disappears and leaves me with nothing!!

So ... what's the problem ... and what to do to get this programme up
and running again?

Thanks

Dave

the obvious question here is which operating system and then which
variety of that.

they made newer versions of gimp2 so that it would migrate whatever
files in the user directory of the old version into the new one and that
this doesn't work so well on windows.

I chose upgrade (well, I had a choice of two things and had to pick
one!) and now when I click to open up the programme it starts but does

another good question is which version of gimp did you have and which
version are you updating to?

So ... what's the problem ... and what to do to get this programme up

a quick solution that might work on any os and any variety of it is to
move your user directory out of the way. either change the name:
mv .gimp-2.0 .gimp-2.0-old or remove it entirely rm -rf .gimp-2.0/*
or whatever version you used to have. and to be on the safe side,
remove the new one it made also -- once again, you will need to know the
version numbers to determine the name of the files i mentioned.

Move away the .gimp-2.2 folder in your Home directory (rename it, we
might want to have a look at it later...). Then start gimp again. It
should do a clean user install then. If that works for you, it would
be nice if you could report back. Perhaps we can find out what had
gone wrong and fix the problem.
