I've got a pdf file that I need to convert to pcx to use as a fax template.

I've installed The GIMP, along with Ghostscript and I can create the
pcx file fine.

However, I'd like to reduce file size by reducing the colour depth to
2, i.e. black and white.

I can do this in MS Photo Editor by Choosing File|Properties and
selecting Image Type Monochrome. This reduces the file size from
215KB to 99KB.

How can I do the same thing from The GIMP? I'm sure it must be
possible, but I'm just not looking in the right place!

No, it isn't currently possible. But it would be rather simple to add
some code to the PCX plug-in so that it stores a monochrome PCX file
in case that the image is in INDEXED mode and the palette only has two
entries. A couple of plug-ins already behave this way.

Sven,

Can you point me at the plug-ins that already do this so I can borrow
the code for the pcx plugin?

Thanks,

R.

[Gimp-user] Gimp compilation errors

I am trying to compile Gimp 2.2.8 on RHEL AS 3.0.

Can anyone help me resolve the above errors.

Thanks in advance

But then you still have to implement the PCX specific parts -- e.g.
how the PCX file format differs for monochrome/indexed versus a
standard image.

Indeed, but it would be easier for me to review how this has been done
by others and adopt it to work for PCX.

PS. Is it just me, or are Sven's and Michael's posts not getting to the
list? I'm only getting the copy that is sent directly to me and the copy
to the list is not arriving.

[Gimp-user] Resolution

2005-08-11 Thread sean
Hi,

I'm learning how to use the Ginp and I have a small problem. The default
resolution seems to be 7 4dpi when I save my work. I need to send my
files to a printing company and they require 300 dpi. Can anyone tell me
how to change the resolution.

Many thanks in advance.

[Gimp-user] The GIMP 2.2.8 for OS/2

2005-08-11 Thread Michael Schumacher
Some of you might still remember - or maybe even use - the operating
system of the future that was supposed to free the world from such
things as DOS or Microsoft Windows 3.x.

Despite being a stable and technologically advanced platform, it didn't
succeed - partly because of its equally advanced hardware requirements
(8 megs of RAM was much in those days), partly because one of its
creators turned against it.

Today, it's user base is mainly loclizced in certain parts of the
finance and touristic commerces, and only a few boxes remained with
individuals. And with IBM having announced End of support for 2006,
the number of OS/2 systems will most likely go down even further.

In this tragical situation, it is a good thing that some individuals
keep up the spirit of Free Software and provide current applications for
a platform that is now considered exotic at best. For a long time,
GIMP 1.2.2 was the latest version of GIMP available for OS/2.

Now, in once amazing quantum leap, this has changed - the current stable
version of GIMP for OS/2 is 2.2.8 - yes, like the current stable version
on the other platforms.

Prebuilt binaries are available from
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=gimppushbutton=Search

There are also the libs that are required (GTK+, Glib etc...) and a
XFree86 package. Kudos to Frank Geissler and Ralph Hannes, for preparing
the builds and posting to a german OS/2 newsgroup respecively, where the
article caught my eye.

It's just you. If you take a look at the headers, it's the same
message, with you in the To: field, and the list being put in the CC:
list. Chances are, your client [like my client - GMail's web
interface] is smart enough to know when a message is a duplicate, and
display it only once.

After all, each e-mail has a seperate ID or whatever... among other
things... which could implement this functionality.
