 Hi

Gimp is powerful/wonderful, and sophisticate; which means that learning
how to use every tool doesn't come without an effort.
Luckily, as you have already been pointed, there is good documentation.
Likewise, there is this nice book I'd recommend you to read, Beginning
Gimp (Akkana Peck) that is very helpful. And last but not least, the
more fun way of learning Gimp is no doubt with Roy Steinort in
www.meetthegimp.org. Very nice and easy to understand webcast from zero.

The problem is that the clone tool requires that you specify what it
is you wish to clone. You do this by holding down the CTRL key while
pointing the brush at the region to be cloned (which can be on a
different layer or image). After specifying the source to be cloned,
activate the layer which you wish to paint on (if necessary) and paint
as usual.

The default behavior is to have the source region track the motion
of your brush, but other options are available. Experimentation is
recommended.

It also might help to reset the clone tool options back to the defaults.

I make only one layer for purpose of experiment and try to work on it. Nothing
changes. And nothing changed in clone tool options. I've installed Gimp from
Debian repository. I'll try to restart computer just in case new updates are

Restarting the computer won't help. Doubleclick the clone tool to get
the tool options visible if they're not visible already. Then click the
bottom right button with the yellow arrow on it to reset it to the
defaults. Then select Select-None to make absolutely sure that there is
no selection left for some reason.

Does the clone tool still refuse to work?

This almost certainly means that your window manager is taking the

The little stamp icon exists in Gimpshop, too. Also, you can reach
the clone tool in a few ways:

1) shortcut key: S
2) in the main window: File Window Tools Clone Stamp Tool
3) in the image window: Window Tools Clone Stamp Tool
4) in the image window: menu arrow Tools Paint Tools Clone
Stamp Tool

My question to you is, would you mind sharing with us what can be
done with a clone tool?

There certainly is a clone tool in the GIMP. In the toolbox it looks like a
stamp, and hovering over it says Paint using patterns or Image Regions.

And the shortcut for clone tool is C
Ctrl+C lets you pick place witch you want to clone. Cloning's shape takes the

This is one of the big reasons why Gimpshop is a horrible idea. By
changing all these things, it adds tons of confusion when trying to give
user support.

Robert, please answer Carol's question about gimpshop resources, instead
of rudely ignoring it. The gimpshop guy thought forking the project from

it's only fair that the users who approve of this also fork the support

It may be that all it needs is the -devel files to finish compiling. If
you have 8.2 Pro, install all your Gnome2 files along with all the
-devel files and the compile should go well. The Gimp supplied on the
SuSE discs is 1.2.3, not 4.2 as you mentioned. I believe that might be
the version of gimp printers, don't remember now.

Patrick

Yes - sorry for having them mixed up. The version numbers are 1.2.5.
And I have learned some new about using the Gimp - layers.
First I found out, that the tools worked on some of my older pictures,
so I started to investigate where the difference was. I have not come so
far in my work with the Gimp, that I have been using the layers, so why
the pictures in question were placed as 'background' I don't know - but
they were. After having flatened the pictures, everything works.
Sorry for the false alarm - and I guess I must be studying the layers.

Hi John -

It's possible that you're just not interpreting the cursor
correctly. To use the clone tool you need to

(a) select it from the toolbar

(b) On the image, move the cursor over the area you wish to
clone FROM.

(c) Ctl-left-click to set the source of the clone

(d) Move your cursor to the area you wish to clone to, and draw
using the left mouse button.

You will be using the current brush, btw.
