Calling all GIMP Artists
Hi! I'm under contract with Peachpit Press to write and design a GIMP book. My editors and I think it would be great to include artwork created by those of you out there in the GIMP community. I'm looking for two kinds of artwork: 1. Professional quality art that will be included in a four-color "image gallery." This artwork should be created for four-color, high quality reproduction and be very special, as space in this section is quite limited. Artists included in this special gallery section will have contact information included in a "Directory of Artists" in the book. 2. Art that will be used as technique examples in the main body of the book. This part of the book will be black and white. Technical examples can be very simple, using one or two effects, or more complex. What I'm really looking for is a special technique that you've perfected and want to share with others. Since I'll be showing the basics in this book, very simple artwork is really useful for illustrating a particular filter or technique. For instance, if I'm describing how to use the mosaic filter, I'd love to have artwork showing how this filter can be used. Some other things you should know: - I cannot offer payment for the use of your work. I will give credit to everyone whose art is used in the book. I will also send a copy of the finished book to each person whose art is used. - If I decide to use your work, you will need to sign a straightforward permissions letter that says I can use your artwork in the book. (If you send me your work, I'm assuming you are willing to sign this letter.) Once I've decided to include your work, I'll send you a copy of the letter. - Please try to submit artwork by December 15, 1999. Thanks, everyone! I am using Slackware on most of my machines, RH 6.0 on a notebook and have tried SUSE once. I still like Slackware, because you get a basic foundation and can install everything you need in /usr/local and/or /opt, just as you like. Rumours tell me that debian is also quite good. But you should be happy with RH. Regards, Steffan -- ... Our continuing mission: To seek out knowledge of C, to explore strange UNIX commands, and to boldly code where no one has man page 4.
opening GIF (2)
As the problem still isn't solved (i had the named libraries installed) i'd like to restate my problem. Maybe somebody can help me out: When trying to open .gif files the opening 'hangs' and i need to cancel the action. On the console i get the following message 2 times when trying to open one .gif file: /usr/local/lib/gimp/1.0/plug-ins/gif: Segmentation fault caught I CAN however save and create .gif files; i just cannot open them. Thanks, cima.
Apologies
Zach--and others offended. I have few resources available firsthand and have seen no discussion anywhere on this topic. I looked around on the web and saw no place where I might find an opinion. I have used GIMP and Linux for 18 months, but have no local Linux/UNIX guru to provide me with sustenance. Whose opinion do I solicit if not the folks who have provided useful and helpful info in the past?...and I do intend to use Linux nearly exclusively for the GIMP. If you can point me to a "more appropriate venue" I will be happy to look there, but I certainly haven't located it. -- Sorry-- Jim Clark

This is a horrible thing to bring up on a GIMP user mailing list. Please discuss it in a more appropriate forum. Distributions?
Slightly off topic, but still related. I use RH 6.0 on my work machine. I am going to install Linux on my home PC. I am eager to try a different distribution. I wonder if anyone has tried more than one distribution with GIMP? And has opinions (never seen a shortage of opinions on this list!) about whether one is better than another for using Linux primarily for the GIMP? -- Thanks! Jim Clark http://www.rma.usda.gov/

What am I missing ? The print plug-in defaults to scaling the image to fill 100% of the page. You can set this to whatever value you like (in percent or in pixels per inch) with the scaling control in the print dialog. later, Andrew Kieschnick
Pixels
I am having a problem understanding the relationship between digital image size and the image size printed from the Gimp on my HP DeskJet 694C. I cannot see how an image of 640x480 can, printed at 600dpi, become the size of an A4 sheet, without the Gimp making changes. ie Does the Gimp take each pixel and expand (for want of a better word) it to multiple pixels? My understanding is that a 640x480 image at 600dpi should be +-1.0 inch by 0.8 inch not 11.9 inch by 8.4 inch. What am I missing ? --- Regards, Alf Stocktonfast.co.za/~stockton Electrocution, n.: Burning at the stake with all the modern improvements.
Writing text along a path
Hi! I'm searching for a way to write a text along a path, e.g. a circle. Does one of you have any clue about how to do this? Thanx in advance, Ralf -- Ralf Gerlich[EMAIL PROTECTED] Passionate programmer http://www.d-design.net/rgerlich/ Visit the free knewcleus OS at http://openworld.d-design.net/!

Cool. The Layers->Flatten image worked, and LaTeX picked up the image perfectly. Thanks to all who responded. Mike -- Michael P. Soulier <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Color choice, gifs & stuff
I was wondering if there are any manuals describing how to make a gif look /good/, tips & trix. Also, are there some manuals/documents discussing choice of colors, colorpsychology?
