[Gimp-user] Question about brush size in 2.7 - can the tool size be linked to the brush size?

2012-01-11 Thread James
I've been using 2.6 for a while, and have started using 2.7. Many of
the improvements (layer groups, single window mode) are amazingly
better, thank you so much!

I have my mouse wheel bound to some brush parameters, including size &
hardness. However, it looks like tools have their own size now.

Is there a way to bind my mouse wheel to the current tool's size? If
not, is there a way to link the tool size to the brush size? It seems
strange to have a brush size that the tools completely ignore - is the
brush size even needed at that point?

Thanks!

Re: [Gimp-user] gimp startup failure

2012-01-13 Thread James
I haven't been following this thread too closely, but have you tried
renaming the profile directory? I'm guessing something in there is
corrupt, causing the hang.

On XP it's:

C:\Documents and Settings\[your_username_here]\.gimp-2.6

(Could also be .gimp-2.7)

I'd rename that (".gimp-2.6-backup") and restart gimp. See what happens.

Re: [Gimp-user] gimp startup failure

2012-01-14 Thread James
Another alternative, if you want to dig further, is to use Process
Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645).
Run that, filter on "gimp", and look at what it accesses during
startup. Somewhere in that last is a) a file it reads that is
corrupt, or b) a file that's missing. Either way, you'll see exactly
what files gimp touches on startup, and there might be some surprises
there.

I've used that before to find startup problems with programs accessing
files in places I did not suspect. Very useful.

Or use colors -> levels. I find colorize to be counter intuitive when
adjusting colors. However, with levels it's easy to adjust the
red/green/blue levels till the color comes out right. Then the next
time you use the levels dialog, just use the first dropdown to use
your last settings. Pretty easy to use the same color over and over.
Also preserves variations in colors better than colorize (which
reduces all colors to grayscale first, essentially).

[Gimp-user] GIMP 2.7.x - How do I move the main tool palette? (single window mode)

2012-02-01 Thread James
I love single window mode in the new 2.7 series. I currently have my
preferences such that the main tool palette is locked to the
upper-left side of the single window.

However, I can't move it. I also can't figure out how to replicate
this on a new install (since by default the tool palette is on the
upper-right and can't be moved).

I'm guessing I missed a setting/preference somewhere. How do I move
the main tool palette? Thanks!

Re: [Gimp-user] extract a reasonably dark image from its background?

2012-02-06 Thread James
I'd recommend doing Color > Levels first, then making sure the black
is as black as you want. Otherwise if it's dark gray (not quite
black), that will translate to partially-transparent when you do the
Color to Alpha.

You could also do Color > Levels and adjust alpha layer after. Either way.

Re: [Gimp-user] extract a reasonably dark image from its background?

2012-02-06 Thread James
Your email is formatted strangely. Hard to read.

I think this is a good reason to do levels first. Without doing
levels, you get a semi-transparent black, and the background shows
through.

Before levels:
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m171/rocketmonkeys/1-beforelevels.png

After levels:
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m171/rocketmonkeys/2-afterlevels.png

After Color To Alpha:
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m171/rocketmonkeys/3-aftercolortoalpha.png
Notice that the blacks are true black, not semi-transparent. This
because you started with black, not gray.

This is what it looks like with a blue background:
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m171/rocketmonkeys/4-withbluebackground.png

Try it out, let me know if you're still stuck.

>>>>> "CB" == Cécile Barbe writes:

CB> I try to open a photoshop image file with gimp.
CB> But it says there is a prolem with the cymk color.

Gimp's psd filter does not seem to handle cmyk psd files.

A quick test confirms that gimp's tiff import filter does.

If you use imagemagick or graphicsmagick to convert the psd to tiff you
will be able to open it in gimp.

If you do not care about preserving the CMYK nature of the file, you
could convert to png instead of tiff, which will force the image to rgb.

I tested with:

:; gm convert foo_cmyk.psd foo_cmyk.tif
:; gimp foo_cmyk.tif

Imagemagick's convert should work just as well.

(I used ghostscript's psdcmyk output device to create the psd which I
used for the test. Ghostscript creates rather simple psd files; files
created by photoshop might not convert as well. YMMV.)

[Gimp-user] Color mismatch when an image is printed

2016-09-21 Thread James Moe
opensuse 42.1

Color profile: sRGB

PictureMate PM 225, Epson Inkjet Printer Driver (ESC/P-R) for Linux

I have a Epson PM225 inkjet color printer.

I have printed images previously with the printer and there was no
noticeable difference in color. The printer has been not used for
several months. There has likely been some GIMP updates during that time.

Currently, when I print an image that has a blue sky, the printed color
has a strong green tint to it, not really close to the displayed blue
sky at all. Other images have printed similarly with the green tint.

I have tried changing ink cartridges. No difference.

The online manual mentions that the display uses RGB while printing is
CMYK. It does not discuss what to do there is a mismatch between the two.

Any suggestions about what may be done to correct the color issue?

It does not explain the printer's distinct color shift when it was

[Gimp-user] Color mismatch between display and printer

2016-09-25 Thread James Moe
This is a continuation of the topic "Color mismatch when an image is
printed."

opensuse 42.1
linux 4.1.31-30-default x86_64
gimp 2.8.16

Display color profile: Adobe RGB (1998)
I have a Epson PM225 inkjet color printer.

Several months ago the printer output an image whose color was a very
close match to the displayed image. Currently, the printer's output has
a strong green tint, a poor match to the display.
The previous topic had several discussions regarding color profiles. I
have tried a variety of them for the display. None of the profiles has
made the slightest difference in the output.
In GIMP settings for Color Management, (Edit :: Preferences :: Color
Management), I have set the "Printer simulated profile" to US Sheetfed
Uncoated. It has made zero difference to the output.
One of the suggestions was to create a color profile for the printer.
The docs make no mention of how to do this. Epson does not offer a ICC
profile for that printer.

1. How do I create a color profile for a printer?
2. Why has the output image changed color?
3. Why has changing the color profiles made no difference whatsoever?

Yes, it does. And I have. The test patterns look normal and are
complete. Initially the patterns had missing segments; after a number of
cleaning cycles they finally became complete.

I have created such a test document, cool idea. All of the colors
print normally AFAICT; the magenta *may* be a bit light, I have no way
to be certain. All of the colors are solid, and look like the color they
claim to be. The test document was created in Libreoffice.
I imported one of the images from Gimp and printed it. The result was
the same: an off-color green tint. This implies the problem is the
printer, not Gimp or Libreoffice. While there a few processing steps
between an app and the printer, I would expect them to treat the output
data as sacred.
Do the apps reference some common system values for deciding the
output color balance?

The printer is an Epson Picturemate pm 225, fairly basic printer. The
print dialogs are equally spartan: portrait/landscape, color/monochrome.
(Note: the OS is linux, not windows.)

I have tried all of the settings the printer itself offers. None have
made any noticeable difference; none have affected the green cast.
Others have mentioned a color profile for the printer. Epson does not
offer any, and I do not know how it would be possible to create one and
assign it to the printer.
Because there is no difference in how the image is printed regardless
of the program which generates the output, and that the printer itself
seems to produce correct test patterns and alignment, my supposition is
that there is some system value that is askew. Where to look for it, I
am clueless.

function. In Settings it shows as turned off. If I turn it on, it shows it is in
Airplane mode, When I disable that, bluetooth turns off. Round and round.
  I gave up.

Can anyone suggest some magical incantations that will have bluetooth behave
as a reliable service?

[Gimp-user] Ufraw and GIMP

2018-09-10 Thread James Moe via gimp-user-list
GIMP 2.8.22
UFRaw 0.22
linux 4.12.14-lp150.12.16-default x86_64

The current version of GIMP has gotten twitchy about return values from
UFRaw:

Opening '/path/to/image/image-001.nef' failed: Procedure
'file-ufraw-load' returned no return values

Well, hmphh!
Now I must open the image in UFRaw directly, save the ppm file, then
open that with GIMP.

Is there way around this?

There is no "Image" option. And Help does not mention Import anywhere.

Any idea how to use it with 2.8?

There are no instructions at the nufraw docs (such as they are). Gimp
Help mentions using gimptool to install a plugin; except there is no
gimptool app in the repository. There is no "Image Import" option in the
2.8 Preferences.

Ah. Here is where things diverge:

configure:9400: == summary =
configure:9402: build GTK GUI: yes
configure:9404: build GIMP plug-in: no

because:
configure:5646: checking for gimpui-2.0 >= 2.2.0
configure:5653: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors "gimpui-2.0 >= 2.2.0"
Package gimpui-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.

Apparently the configure script wants the 2.0 version of gimpui to be
at least 2.2. The version in the system is 2.0.50.
It would seem I am SOL on this one.

back and forth of a gradient line...I would really appreciate it if you could
help me get it to make solid lines once more. Thanks again you guys are doing
great things and I appreciate it immensely.

Assuming I understand your request, here are two options.

1. Create two layers. The lower layer has a background of your choice. The upper
layer has your image. Adjust the opacity of the image to suit.

2. Create two layers. The lower layer has your image. The upper layer has a
solid color of your choice; adjust the opacity to suit.

In both cases the rest of the content resides in layers above the two
background layers.

  And another way:

3. Set the background image in a lower layer. Adjust the opacity of the upper
layer(s) to allow the background to show.

This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

Are there steps I need to take update Gimp or the Mac OS?

Is "trend micro" a firewall product? If so, you may need to whitelist
